sometimes the way people think is surprising.. can anyone tell me the native language of nigeria?. nigeria have over 250 languages and the only way we all can communicate is english.. so why teach an isoko man in igbo when he doesnt know the language.. obviously, everything about this government is dull. sick and tired of this country. 1 Like |

Am a Ghanaian but sometyms I find de decisions of African leaders very ridiculous... teaching maths n science in our local languages... OK fine, how ll one call chemical elements lyk molybdenum, titanium or even ordinary aluminum in say yuroba or igbo not to talk about de confusion dat ll arise in trying to get a name for a term lyk thermodynamics..may be he should rather consider dz local language usage at de infantile n montessori levels n English later as one progresses on de academic ladder... De confusion de African child is already living with is enough, don't add anymore to his woes. 1 Like |

okusebi: why are you so stubborn to understand??.. nobody is talking about replacing english as the national language..its easier to teach in the regional languages.. every local goverment area have their own local language...its easier for the children to learn at school with the language they were taught at home by the mothers and fathers... |

Kingsley1000:Majority in China speaks the same language. You can't compare it with Nigeria with Yoruba, Igbo, and many others. Besides, unlike chinese, ethnic groups in Nigeria has refused to develop their language. China has each words for every part of any human labelled diagram in anatomy, in chemistry, and other Enginerring sciences. But our people here has refused to develop theirs. Not even a standard dictionary we have. What does celebrum, Medulla Oblongata, Sinciputs, Benzene, tetraoxosulphate(vi) acid, or Chloroalkane means in our local language. They wont bother to give it a name! So such an undeveloped and local language should not be encouraged among scholars |

Even in england, they don't teach math and science in English. 90% of math and science is Greek and Latin. |

joeGH: the yorubas already have all that... the local goverments can consult the regional universities to translate words from english to local languages.. igbos dont speak completly english with each other.. yorubas neither.. hausas even lesser... it makes no sense to learn a language that is foreign to people.. english is foreighn to us... |

nedu2000: Thats another move to put our education system on the downside. The only region where there can significant improvement is the North(Hausa's) they are so accustomed to speaking their language. The other regions value Turenchi more than their indigenous languages. It will only be effective for learning if parents change their respective attitudes. Some children doesn't even know the meaning 'WA KIN PA E'. 1 Like |

Gmajor: I guess so too, I just think they wanna try this indigenous thingy if it'll work, But it'll be kinda weird, how do they wanna explain how sodium hydroxide reacts with hydrogen chloride in yoruba, or state the law of magnetism in igbo, or identify the skeleton parts in hausa, Weird mehn, hehehe |

@All who seem not to understand how this would work. Nigerian many languages is not a problem. Yorubas would study in Yoruba, Igbos would study in Igbo, Hausas would study in Hausa, e.t.c from the same syllabus/ curriculum. Its like the way Jehovahs witnesses publish their Watchtower and Awake magazines in different languages. The same thing the English version is saying is exactly the same thing the other languages are saying, but these native languages make penetration and understanding easier. A white man is exploiting what we should be doing for ourselves already!!. And those of you bothered about lack of science terminologies, the minister recognizes that as a challenge and he said they'll work that out with the ministry of education. And for your information, once upon a time English language itself didn't have the terminologies also, because Britain was also enslaved and they also spoke the language of their captors. English was not even an official language until 1362. Before this time Britain also studied sciences in Greek and Latin. It was from 1616 that their eyes opened and they decided to take control of their native English language. This is why more than 90% of the science terminologies in English today are actually words copied from Greek, Latin, German, French. So, yes, Britain itself did what we are trying to do. |
