The Senate has commenced the process of amending the Nigeria Customs Service Act which aims at preventing appointment of Comptroller General from outside the Service.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, Senator Hope Uzodinma (PDP, Imo) disclosed this during a meeting with five former Comptroller-Generals of Customs on the amendment of NCS Act.

Uzodinma said a Customs Commission will be established to replace the board of the NCS. The commission when established would be headed by a retired Customs CG.

“The commission would monitor the NCS activities and replace the board of the NCS. The appointment of an outsider to head the NCS has derailed the country’s revenue generation,” he said.

Seeking for the input of the retired CGs on the amendment of the NCS Act, Uzodinma said with proper supervision of the NCS, the country’s revenue would be stabilised.

The five former CGs that attended the meeting are Bello Haliru, Jacob Gyang Buba (Gbong Gwon Jos), Nwadialo Benard-Shaw, A. Mustapha and A Kajoli.

Speaking at the meeting, Haliru advocated for building of the capacities of personnel of the NCS.

“The present boss of the NCS should be called Sole Administrator and not Comptroller-General. Critical changes needed to be done on the service to strengthen it,” he said.

A good move. How can a non-Customs officer head the Customs. It is an insult. Can a non-military officer head the Army? Even a non-combatant army officer cannot even head the army not to talk of a non-Army officer. We need to use our senses when making appointments and learn to respect the constitution.

Their grudges with this guy is not about uniform, but for the man's hard stance against corruption, I believe the committee presumed to be once a juicy committee and the taste of every senator is now becoming detested because this man on corruption is harder than Baba himself. Ask who knows this guy, you will hear who is Hamed Ali. See who they are meeting with, if you forgot, Bello Haliru was the former CG of customs that went to court on wheel chair forming ill because of corruption charges against him.
Nigerians should please reason with Baba and give all the support he need to at least reduce this impunity.

See the idiots making laws in our country. Is it the outsider heading customs that has caused revenue to fall or the recession in the country, the forex scarcity, the banning of items, the duty on cars etc etc etc? Can you collect duty on goods that don't come to your port?


How can an organisation change when you say only corrupt insiders can become head, It's like asking a Nigerian police commisioner that has risen up the ranks and knows nothing else but collecting tollgate from the 1st day he put on Uniform as a new recruit to reform the Police force...really?

Misplaced priority!

At the last check, Customs revenue has increased relatively despite the reduction in imports. The present comptroller appears to have blocked a lot of sharp practices and leakage of revenue in the Customs service. I'm curious to know where the senator saying this has gotten his info from. This clearly looks like the handwork of disgruntled senior Customs officers who have been prevented from siphoning billions as was always the practice in the past. They will fight against anyone blocking them from their usual feast, and as usual, a lot of Nigerians will simply just support anything which they remotely perceive is against buhari's decision.
