Nigeria coach Rohr has managed across Africa and so is well-placed to pick a winner in Sunday's African Nations Cup final. He thinks Cameroon, who have vastly overperformed after some of their top names refused call-ups, deserve it more because Egypt have been too defensive.
"This is a very interesting final, it is difficult to say who will win. They are two teams who play different football," the 63-year-old told DW in an interview by the beach in Gabon's capital Libreville. "One team are playing very good collective football and the other team is based on the defensive block, so for the interests of the game it is better that the team who is attacking will win."
Cameroon, also embroiled in a bonus row with their federation like so many African teams before them, are four-times winners while Egypt and their 44-year-old goalkeeping captain Essam El Hadary are record seven-times champions.[/b]

"Here in Central Africa we are close to Cameroon and so I think they will have a lot of people to support them while Egypt has a very good coach, a good strategy but they didn't do so much for the spectacle. But they are here so anything is possible in the final," Rohr added.

Missing in Gabon, back on track for the World Cup

Nigeria did not qualify for the tournament in Gabon and Rohr, who previously managed Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso, was drafted in to lead the Super Eagles in August.
They have since won two World Cup 2018 qualifiers and sit top of their group, with Rohr praising his captain John Obi Mikel among others.
"It is an interesting challenge, to have a new team, a young team, to build a team with players who really have the spirit of the country, who want to play, to fight, to give their all, who don't want to speak about material things, but who are here because they want to play for their country," Rohr said.
"We have a good captain with experience we have found some defenders to make us stronger at the back and I think the spirit and harmony of the team is very good. But we know the important times come now."

An eye still on the Bundesliga

Despite living and working for a long time in France before heading for Africa, former Bayern Munich player Rohr has not forgotten his German roots.
"I see all the games. The Bundesliga is always one of the most interesting championships in the world with the most goals, with the most spectators in the stadium, always the stadiums are nice and full. Even a team at the bottom has a fantastic stadium," he said.
The revelation of the season has been promoted RB Leipzig rising up to second in the table to challenge leaders Bayern for the title. Many pundits have been critical of the Red Bull-backed club, which only came into being in 2009 and counts Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls as sister sides.
Rohr is not interested in the furor over whether they are a "plastic" club and saw their success coming.
"RB Leipzig are not a surprise for me. I know how they work, like in Salzburg, New York and in other sports. They want to be first everywhere and now they are second in Germany and they play well.
"They are only three points behind Bayern so we have a real big duel between the two teams and it will be interesting for the end of the season."

People may not realize this but Messi’s non existent work rate has already reduced Neymar’s chance of success at Barca considerably. It has already helped push forward Villa’s transfer this summer because Villa can’t make up the ground to cover for Messi’s lazy bones.

The Statistics

Of all the players that I looked at, Lionel Messi ran the least. He ran 44,027 meters in 482 minutes of play, scoring 5 goals and getting 3 assists. Compare this to Xavi: 56,552 meters in 441 minutes. The raw numbers there are obvious: Messi is truly out-worked by Xavi. When compared to all the Barcelona players whose stats are available, Messi runs fewer meters. He played the most minutes, but ended up “working” less than anyone else.

You know more than his coach who sees him daily in training and who forms his tactics based on that. As a City fan, you've forgotten how he kills you guys when he plays with his workrate? LOL

Anyway, just wanted you to know you shouldn't believe Messi doesn't have great defensive contributions.

I did not say I know more than the coach. I highlighted the sources from my analysis and if Messi improved massively defensively under Enrique, it highlights my point. He is no more as explosive as he used to play. grin

I am not convinced defending forwards is the best way to go. I see Suarez as Ideal and I feel the goals ratio is the best way for Nacho to go if he is to become the great we believe he can become.

LMAO...He's not explosive. Who is the top scorer in Champions league? Messi has 10 goals. The closest has 6. He's also the joint second in number of assists.

He's only a goal behind Suarez in La liga playing a lot of times as a Central midfielder allowing Dennis Suarez to play AM.

He is also second in number of assists.

Bros, define explosive for me abeg?

Why do you sometimes argue for the sake of argument?

Here is your comment about watching Messi recently:

TheGoodJoe:

Historically, Messi is not that type of player that works hard to retrieve the ball and seen as lazy on the pitch. The stats I posted shows it. If he has improved under Enrique, props to him. I have not watched much of him this season. From what I expect from Nacho, there are other areas that needs improving than tracking back to defend and win balls.

If you have not watched much of him this season, why will you insist he's not explosive? Because you want to win argument?

It is to check who is in form in camp. That is all I am saying. Whether dip in form without playing time or not. The question is, who among our players are the best to make the starting line-up. If Iheanacho is among the best, play him.

When once we think best, the analysis is less complicated.

It's not that simple

Training and playing a match are two different things finding the balance between the two require some exceptional understanding and intuition.

It's extremely problematic, you can train good but can't transfer it the match. Again some players train badly but play exceptionally well.

I recall the very exceptional Danny Shittu who in my opinion was one of our best ever defenders. Didn't kick a ball competitively for Bolton near two years.

Played in the AFCON and was outstanding for Nigeria some suggested he was better than Yobo at the time.

Unless there is another method, the best way is to check the best players in camp. Some players play exceptionally well for their clubs and can not replicate that form during games.

Just as Guardiola recently pointed out Sane's improvement in training and the form replicated on the pitch. That is the tested method. That is why coaches rely on training while selecting their team.

Exclusive – Rohr Receives Report On Hertha Berlin German-Nigerian Defender Torunarigha

Hertha Berlin highly rated 19 year old defender Jordan Torunarigha could be in line for a shock call up to the Super Eagles, Owgoalnigeria.com understands.

We gathred that coach of the senior Nigeria team Gernot Rohr received glowing reports about the German born defender, who is comfortable as a left full back or central defender.

Torunarigha is yet to play for the German Bundesliga side but he has sufficiently impressed the technical crew of the team, as he has made the matchday squad of the team on several occasion.

Standing at an impressive height of 189cm, he is the son of former Shooting Stars man Ojokojo Torunarigha, who starred for the Ibadan side in the 80’s.

However Nigeria need to fend off interest from Germany who have already capped the defender at youth level, with the press in Germany going as far as nicknaming him “Berlin Wall”.

http://owngoalnigeria.com/2017/02/03/exclusive-rohr-receives-report-on-hertha-berlin-german-nigerian-defender-torunarigha/

Well done Rohr. grin

He is a central defender who can be converted fully to a left back because of his preferred foot.

He has made the match day squad of the team on several occasions for a Bundusliga team. That is not a beans. grin

We don't need to wait until his club starts playing him and he starts shinning before capping him.

After all, Iwobi too was capped before he kicked a ball for Arsenal and we can see what he is turning out to be. grin

Mr Rohr! Continue. grin

Rohr is unapologetically biased towards German football which is not his fault this is where most of his experiential knowledge comes from.

When we are talking Green Eagles national team it is not a testing ground. But a an arena to prove your ability.

Players who have not played a competitive season with thier teams from where we can assess thier quality, ability, and possible contribution to improve our national team. SHOULD NOT be invited to camp yet.

Why is he bias?

The question should be, are they good enough?

If they are good, what is problem?

I think some of those players are very good and they have got the potentials.

Besides, Rohr is looking for certain players for certain positions lacking in the Super Eagles hence the need to scout for players all over.

However, Felix Uduokhai is a central defender with 1860 Munich in the second Bundusliga and he is playing regularly. Mind you, he is just 19 years old.

How many defenders do we have playing regularly in a top league, apart from Balogun and Troost?

Jordan Torunarigha is also a central defender and he can as well play at the left back. grin He is currently in a Bundusliga team that is in the top 5 on the table and yet he is still making the matchday team. Even at 19. grin

Bros, make una allow Rohr do em work na. Abi una wan make em shine for one game before we call am? I promise you that by that time e go don dey too late. Our eyes go con clear. grin

Noah joel Sarenren Bazee, chai! See name. grin

This is the only forward player Rohr wants in his team.

He is a right winger/second striker and he is playing regularly in a team that is second on the Bundusliga 2. I even read he is on the watch list of a team in the Bundusliga. I think that is enough to tell you he is good. He is just 20 years of age.

We don't need to wait until they start shinning before capping them.

We don't need to go too far, Iwobi is a case study. grin

Eagles Coach Rohr Reveals – We Have Found New Defenders To Make Us Stronger At The Back

image
Coach of the Nigeria senior national team Gernot Rohr says he has found new defenders who will improve the team in their Nations Cup 2019 and World Cup 2018 qualifiers.

Rohr made this known during an interview in Gabon, where he is presently working as a TV pundit at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in the absence of Nigeria.

“It is an interesting challenge, to have a new team, a young team, to build a team with players who really have the spirit of the country, who want to play, to fight, to give their all, who don’t want to speak about material things, but who are here because they want to play for their country,” Rohr said.

“We have a good captain with experience we have found some defenders to make us stronger at the back and I think the spirit and harmony of the team is very good. But we know the important times come now.”

Even though he didn’t give out the names of the players he has added to the defence of the team, the Franco German manager has few weeks ago confirmed Dutch-Nigerian full back Tyrone Ebuehi as one of the players he plans adding to his team.

He also revealed that he is doing his frustration over the duration of time needed to get a Nigerian passport for players born outside Nigeria, which kind of suggested that he is talking about Russian-Nigerian defender Brian Idowu.

The duo are possibly the addition he is talking about base on the above statements, but in the coming days especially the friendly game against Senegal will go a long way in revealing more about his defensive additions.

Firstly, the term bias is used not in the context of undue favour. But rather to understand Rohr knowledge base and experiential competencies which emanate essentially from the German Bundesliga. In this regard it is a handicap because players with possibly far better potential playing in the EPL will be overlooked.

You mentioned Iwobi that's a failed analogy Arsenal is not Hertha Berlin. They are clearly not on par.

You used the term GOOD ENOUGH but by what comparison or unit of measurement. My proposition is that we can do much, much better.

The Bundesliga is not on the same quality and or level as the EPL I am sure you would not debate that. The German 2nd tier is considerably lower than the English championship.

As a pool of talent there are far more talented Nigerians in the EPL by a huge margin than there is in the Bundesliga.

These boys you are calling special talents will struggle to cut it as youth players in the premiership. A boy playing youth football with a few appearances in the first team for Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United & City, Liverpool and Tottenham is not a reflection of inability but Quality. These boys are competing with World class players to get a shirt.

In this regard Rohr approach in that he is German / Dutch bias is a flaw not an advantage. Because the best available players to Nigeria are not being given opportunities.

Maybe I am not getting you right. Are you saying Rohr will favour some players in the Bundusliga because he is a German/Dutch?

Where are those players with possible far better potentials in EPL apart from the ones we know? I mean, are there any good defenders ready to play for their fatherland that have been overlooked so far? grin

Especially, Left back players. grin

For now there are none but if you know any please endeavor to list them for us to evaluate. grin

I mentioned Iwobi to make a point that identifying a talent at the earlier stage is the key to getting a potentially good player. I mean having an eye for talents. But if you are not satisfied with Iwobi then please tell me the league or club Dele Alli was spotted playing for before joining Tottenham-hotspur-football-club? grin

Please, tell me where Ademola-lookman last played before joining Everton?

My point is about spotting potential talents and not necessarily playing in a big Club. No! No!

Rohr’s German-Nigerian Target Torunarigha Makes Bundesliga Debut For Hertha Berlin

Highly rated German-Nigerian centre back Jordan Torunarigha made his Bundesliga debut for Hertha Berlin in their 1-0 win over Ingolstadt.

As exclusively revealed by Owngoalnigeria.com, Torunarigha is among the numerous players penciled down by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for call up to the team in the nearest future.

The son of former Shoooting Stars ace Ojokojo Torunarigha, but he has already represented Germany at various youth levels although he still remains eligible for Nigeria as he is yet to make a senior debut for the land of his birth.

Torunarigha has made the bench for the team in previous Bundesliga games before finally getting a chance to come on the pitch against Ingolstadt.

The 19 year old replaced Vedad Ibisevic on the dot of regulation time as Hertha Berlin seek to grind out a 1-0 win, which they ended up doing to move up the log standings.

Firstly. the Bundesliga is not on the same level as the premiership. The EPL is widely recognised as the best league in the World. My view is that it is a toss up between La Liga and the EPL.

Dele Alli was playing at MK Dons in league 1 but was clearly an outstanding talent. However, his Father remarried left to the USA and Dele's alcoholic mother ended up loosing her son to social services care order. Dele like an orphan with no parents ended up in care. His Father failed him woefully. You can understand why he refused to play for Nigeria.

Ademola Lookman is a very good players barely three years ago he was not even playing professional football. Just essentially Sunday amateur league before he was signed by Charlton after 25 games and 6 goals. He was marketed very successfully by his agents Base soccer.

Considering you live and work with most of these England boys in England, I doubt you're in an impartial position to tell us which country has a pool of talents as against the other.

Let Rohr go and meet the boys he can convince. Last last, if he speaks to them in German he can probably get to them faster, no be all these innit boys that will tell you they'll get back to you after they've exhausted their chances of playing for Queen and Country

I take it this is from your own biased point of view undecided

Considering you live and work with most of these England boys in England, I doubt you're in an impartial position to tell us which country has a pool of talents as against the other.

Burkina Faso 1-0 Ghana

..And once again, the azonto boys go to Accra with the Charcoal medal.

Considering how subpar their team was this AFCON, they must be given props for getting this far....

There was a time Nigerians would say "Even if we send useless team, last last, na we get bronze medal"

I think it's time Ghanaians say "Even if we send useless team, last last, we go take fourth position" grin

Congrats to the Burkinabe, they have also consistently put up good performances for AFCON tournaments, hopefully, Africa will have a worthy representative in them for the World Cup

Everton Fans Gush Over Nigerian Wonderkid: He Is Better Than Messi, Next Thierry Henry
The Everton faithful were impressed with the performance of Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman on his full debut for the Toffees in their 6-3 rout of Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Lookman, who was signed from Charlton Athletic in January, did not look out of place in the Everton attack and was full of trickery during the 71 minutes he spent on the pitch and the fans were clearly delighted with what they saw.

Below are some tweets from the Everton fans :

@grandoldteam tweeted : “ Ademola Lookman. Let’s not get carried away but he’s already better than Thierry Henry”.

‏@greenallefc said : “Romelu Lukaku, world class Ross Barkley, cocky Arrow Ademola Lookman, next Messi Oumar Niasse, legend”.

Matt Smith commented : “Not exaggerating but Ademola Lookman looks a decent player and when I say decent player I mean the next Lionel Messi #efc”.

@EvertonBlueArmy added : “Ademola Lookman is just absolutely quality, mate. Whipping out all the tricks now. #EVEBOU”.

Lookman, who is being monitored by the Nigeria Football Federation with a view to a call up to the Super Eagles, made his fourth appearance in the English top-flight against Bournemouth.
