The next tool or step after the two advice above is to practice the little safety you know mainly at home and everywhere. The reasons been that as you graduate and become a better both on the job and in acquiring certification, you will discover your success in the job will determine by how much you practice and believe in what you say than the words you say. Some company may offer you the opportunity to learn on the job while some wont, in any of the case you must become certified and increase your awareness in the field. Certification is quite different from awareness and this is were i want to correct so many erroneous write up i read during some pages of this thread. 1 Like |

Certifications are obtained from Bodies which spell out certain conditions which include setting up of syllabus, modules ,conduct exams among others and when you meet the conditions you would be awarded certificates.Let me also add that these certificates are legally backed up by statutory and relevant laws. As a safety newbie i would advise you get the ISPON certificates and during more years of practice and money available you do Nebosh, starting from Nebosh IGC, then you graduate to the Nebosh Diploma.Other certification include IEMA, OSHA....but i must note at this point that OSHA has so much awareness approach and it is tailored mainly for American based system. The various HSE 1,2,3, fire programme and a host of training you see advertised are awareness programme a feat that any company should organize for all her staff and not necessarily HSE would be.In fact when you become employed that would be your job.To make all staff in your company aware of these issues. 2 Likes |

Thanks to all the contributors on this forum.. God bless. I will soon be a LAW graduate and am planning to go for some HSE certifications but I need advice and direction (will appreciate if I can have some barristers that can answer this question). I am planning on going for either PMP, human resource or any environmental certifications trainings, what do the professionals think |

richardoz: In my opinion, HSE Level 1,2,3 might not get you a job that you so much desire. The professional knowledge in Safety Sciences and HSE has gone beyond slip trips and falls and stuff like unsafe act and unsafe conditions. Don't get me wrong, these are the basics and are important. However one needs to do more. A lot of people now have NISP/ISPON,Novelle levels 1,2 and 3 certifications alongside others. I am not saying loose hope. But right now, a lot of people have these things. From this topic alone you can imagine.. Lawyers, Lab Technicians etc. |

donefezy: It would be difficult to know this unless someone can verify from ISPON. You should be looking at their affiliation to ISPON and other international certification bodies. If they have a website or if you can do so, ask them about their affiliation. When they give you the information, independently verify this before patronizing them. |

RAREGEMife: I am not a lawyer, but I am not ignorant of HSE Regulations and Enforcement either. PMP has a Risk Assessment module as part of the course. However, it doesn't give you a HSE Certificate. Project Management is a skill we all need. So it is good to have this. The last DPR recruitment a lot of lawyers applied as "Legal Human Resource Professionals" because there was no opening for pure Lawyers/Experienced Legal Officer for under the experienced hires category. They therefore applied as Humans Resource Officers and it did those who had CIPM a lot of good. They classified themselves as Legal Human Resource Officers and stated stuff relating to Giving legal advice on human resources labour matters and guiding an organisation in making lawful HR decisions etc.You could also go this route and also try to register with Chattered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM). Environmental Law is a sub discipline of Law. You know this better than I do. Perhaps you want to do courses that might give you an insight into this aspect of Law? You may want to consider this. I do have a few books on environmental law. I could also make them available for you to read. The question you need to ask is what do you need the certificates for. They shouldn't just be acquired for their sake. Is there a reason why you should acquire them? Are you trying to focus on an area? You need to know this, otherwise if you don't practise you might loose the skills and knowledge. If you just want HSE certification and appreciation knowledge, then you need to do ISPON HSE levels 1,2,3. Note that these HSE courses focus a lot more on Safety than on Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene and Environment. You can do some other Environmental Management Courses, which are not so common in Nigeria. For a more advanced path you could do your LLM in Environmental Law. 1 Like |

donefezy: Then go with the ones that have available websites. I am not advertising for them, but follow this thread and you will see groups like Novelle etc. I would prefer you do this with ISPON. HSE Levels 1,2 and 3. Look for the ISPON Training calendar/ schedule for your State and register with them. It will serve you well in the long run with the current legislative regime governing HSE Practise in Nigeria and the role and mandate of ISPON. |

donefezy: Give it time. Perhaps they could be loading their 2017 training schedules for all Regional/State centers. This happens usually around end of January/February of each year. Will also try to get in touch with the Lagos State Chapter Chairman. |

Dear Group Attn: All HSE Professionals Here Upcoming Friday, 28 April World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2017 World Day for Safety and Health at Work OPTIMIZE THE COLLECTION AND USE OF OSH DATA A contribution to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 8 The ILO’s campaign for the 2017 World Day for Safety and Health at Work focuses on the critical need for countries to improve their capacity to collect and utilize reliable occupational safety and health (OSH) data. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted on September 25, 2015 encompasses a global plan of action with specific targets to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. With its adoption, the capacity to collect and utilize reliable OSH data has also become indispensable for countries to fulfil their commitment to implement and report on some of the agenda’s 17 sustainable development goals and their targets. Sustainable Development Goal 8, in particular, provides for the promotion of “inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all” and its Target 8.8 focuses on the “protection of labour rights and promotion of safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment.” For Target 8.8 countries are asked to report on the following indicator: “Frequency rates of fatal and non-fatal occupational injuries, by sex and migrant status”. Multiple ILO OSH conventions also require ratifying member States to establish mechanisms to collect and utilize reliable OSH data for prevention purposes. These ILO instruments recognize that the collection and utilization of reliable OSH data are indispensable for the detection of new hazards and emerging risks, the identification of hazardous sectors, the development of preventive measures, as well as the implementation of policies, systems and programmes at international, national and enterprise levels. OSH data provide the basis for setting priorities and measuring progress. We look forward to this convention and hope a few Nigerians will be able to participate in various capacities. |
