This type of topic should be deleted by the moderators as its promoting slavery. English is not our language!!. It is a language forced down the throats of our ancestors when we were slaves, and as such, you shouldn't be proud speaking it.

Some of you often ask; what were our ancestors doing to have been enslaved? What they were doing is the same thing you're doing today when you promote English language or feel proud speaking it.

Our native languages are now in a sorry state, some under threat of extinction, while we're busy fooling around promoting English. I regret to have learned to speak English in school. I wish I invested all that time studying Igbo language and one other Nigerian language, like Yoruba or Hausa. If I could go back to school I'll invest my time studying our native languages.
you be mumu, you for use igbo language go find work na

I never said not to study English, but studying English shouldn't result to inability to master our own languages as is the case today.

Quite chatting with these people, they can't get it.
They are unable to get the bigger picture.
These types will tell you African tradition is barbaric and should be abolished, and speaking indigenous languages is wrong.

They are actually the type of people I signed up Nairaland account for. I signed up for this forum to be able to see whether I could help many reset their minds from the western world view imposed on us via slavery. But, it's not easy as you can see.

anybody you see type or mention afonja is a classic fools , afonja according to history was a local worrior who fought against Fulani rulership Ilorin kwara state, kwara state is a North Central Nigeria comprises of many tribes and languages

you are right but let me add this .....afonja is more than a local warrior but like the General of the Yoruba army who revolted against the alafin of Oyo and this broke into a great war. For him to get upper hand in the battle against Oyo empire backed by other Yoruba states, he had to employ a fulani man popularly called Alimi and his soldiers who came down to ilorin from the North. However after the battle against the Yorubas, Alimi and his soldiers more stronger and skillful took over the village of ilorin, taught the people Islamic ways, built mosque and in short, took over the village of ilorin. The Ilorin-Yorubas tried hard to chase them back but couldn't so the fulani successfully took over ilorin and became the ruling power as at then.... Afonja was killed in one of the war against the fulani

I often have this argument with my WhatsApp friends from other African countries mostly Ghana,South Africa and Zimbabwe. They make so much fun of Nigerian English eh, it disgusts me..
English was never our mother's tongue,it was forced down on us by the colonial masters and its such a shame that some African countries (Ghanaians in particular) like bragging about how good they are at speaking English.
I wonder what happened to their mothers tongue.
We gotta be proud of our heritage just the same way the whites men are proud of theirs..
let's save our culture!!

In summary, the "Afonja" is used to make mockery of the Yoruba races because he lost one of the most important Yoruba town to the Fulani for his own greed

your opinion tho....

ilorin is still a Yoruba major town and the activities of the fulani has been relegated to the background...

Ilorin is never lost and it is still very much part of the Yoruba major town

English remain our official language. Nobody goes for a job interview and communicate in his native language. As a government official you can only be considered fluent/sound if you can express yourself smoothly in English. Your native Language is important when you want to execute plans but officially English remain the one. I've never heard francophones complain about French so why do we have bias about English being our official Language? Our native Languages cannot go into extinction as far as our tribes still exist.

The African culture is richer and better than the western culture. but at a time we lost it due to our inability to be united against a common enemy.

I have said severally here that learning English shouldn't mean inability to master our own native languages as is the case today.

And no, languages do go extinct if a people don't speak their language for any reason. Popular extinct language is Latin. But, during the reign of the Roman Empire from 27 BC up to about 177 AD, Latin was spoken from the Mediterranean region up to almost entire western Europe.

afonja means yoruba.
Will you learn? Afonja was a warrior in Ilorin,a little part in yoruba land dominated by yorubas and great number of fulanis. Yoruba are called Oodua not afonja as igbo are reffered as zooafran

Let me reiterate that our native languages cannot go into extinction because they are well spoken by large number(at least 60% converse in their local languages), used in many songs and studied in schools. Future is bright!
