Tradition...
Dora pursed her lips 'what do you mean you dont feel like talking? Did you swallow a frog?'

Dike smiled 'i have a slight headache. I was really stressed today'

She settled on the bed beside him 'i was meaning to talk to you 'bout something Dike'

Dike grumbled 'i told you i'm not in the mood to talk. Okay, what is it?'

'i want a job'

He looked at her.

'remember i studied accounting?' She continued 'i know you can employ me. I really need a job. I'm tired of staying in this house everyday. It makes those people who are not even up to my class talk to me anyhow. I cant tolerate insults from anyone anymore. Because one day i might just do something i will surely regret. Thats why i want something to take me out of the house every mornings'

'really?'

'i'm not joking'

'who said you were?'

'i'm very serious here Dike! I cant tolerate insults from those ladies anymore. I'm not their mate'

'okay. I've heard you. Excuse me for the night because i'm tired. I'll get back to you tomorrow, okay?'

'promise?'

'i cross my heart'

'alright' She stood up, then as an afterthought, placed a quick kiss on his cheeks 'goodnight'

'you too'

***
'you seem to have a penchant for always leaving your room at night dont you?'

Shiv jerked and quickly hid her diary behind her. Then she looked up as Dike alighted the stairs. She swallowed clutching her diary tighter.

'what are you doing this time?' he asked.

He was on a white caftan. He looked elegant in it.

'none of your business'

'you're writing your budget for tomorrow aint you? When you're done, just pass me the bill, i'll handle it. Thats what you're here for isnt it?'

'you're a very senseless human being oga sir!' She stood up, diary still behind her 'since i've been in this house for over a month as your wife, have i met you anyday for anything? Whats your problem? Must you always speak like a mad man?'

'me? Mad man?' He threw his head backwards in a humourless man 'dont make it sound like you run the expenses in this house. Who pays for the food you consume? Who pays for the light bills, water bills and all? Who pays for the fuel in the cars which you use to run around town? Certainly not your money-hungry money'

Her eyes widened saucers 'what did you say?'

He let out a sigh 'tell me the truth Shivani. Why did you marry me?'

'what brought about that question and how dare you call my mother, a money-hungry woman?!' She fumed. Dike had bitten more than he could chew. Maybe she really needed to call Lolo this time. She couldnt tolerate this anymore.

'well isnt that true?'

'dont you ever....!' She raised her hand to slap him again but he caught it quickly.

He shook his head biting his lips 'dont. Dont try that again'

'let go of my hands now! You fool'

'you might want to lower your voice. Because everyone's asleep. I want to help you out. I understand you're in love with someone else. And i want to help you the way i helped Dora. If you're in love with someone else, you dont have to be faithful. You can have an affair, outside marriage' He shrugged 'i couldnt care less. Afterall, we have no relationship, physical or sexual. The only stumbling block you might have is that you two would never be able to be together, marriage terms. Else, you'll be banished with your family. I wont tell, trust me'

She looked at him as if he had suddenly gone mad 'what are you saying? Have you gone bananas?'

He let go of her hand 'i'm just telling you. Dont feel you need to remain faithful to me. Because whether you are or not, i dont appreciate and aknowledge it, okay?'

'what you're saying makes no sense'

'its not right betraying someone you love because of the happiness of someone else. Your hapiness first, another other person comes second. Its not right. You're stuck here now because of your mother. And its just not right. You're supposed to be happy. With a man who loves you and someone you also love. Not someone you're always fighting with. Permit me to say you werent sensible enough'

'dont you dare'

'just think about how sad you are now. I know you always leaving your room at night isnt a habit. But out of depression' He shrugged 'i cant do much for you anyway. Because we are both stuck'

She continued staring at him.

'well, i'm in the mood for something strong. I dont know about you' He strolled to the bar reaching for a bottle of spirit. He reached for a glass and turned a little quantity into it 'care for?'

She bit her lower lip harder. Maybe a hot drink was something she needed to cool her fraying nerves 'yes i do'

It's an online story and a fiction which is someone's imagination
I don't believe the way shivani talks to Dike also happens in reality, I mean talking rudely to a crowned prince not to talk of him being her husband though Dike may always disrespect her and the rest of his wives while addressing but as an African I don't think any of the wives would be bold enough to talk back at him not talk of slapping him once and an attempt to do it again sometime later. Well, it's a fiction sha and I'm kind of enjoying it
