No way I talk down my Mikel but the obvious is, Mikel will not be rated above AMF and attacker in this era. grin

Everybody is taking about Drogba and Lampard at Chelsea but they have forgotten without Mikel no champions League trophy.

You can see my point. grin

Yobo did nt play with the senior standard liege team until 2000.
I wanted to point this out. Because in 99 he was just 19. In 98 when he was registered by Standard Liege he should be 18.

I watched live not in TV the Nigeria vs Mali quater finals in Enugu. I was still to gain access to the jam packed Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium when fans screamed Goal! Those of us outside started jubilanting,we thought Nigeria scored only to gain access into the stadium and saw a different thing in the score board.
Ikedia was the only Nigerian player who came to the party. He was so good that one Hausa man sitting in front of me wrote on a white handkerchief "I love Ikedia" we all cheered.

One player who who had a very bad game was Musa. We were all screaming to the bench "change Musa put Shittu". The Malians were just too good on the day. Diarra and Seydou Keita. We just couldn't handle Seydou Keita on the day. There was visible panick whenever Keita was in the ball. Lots of locals nicknamed him Ogbete because of a market in Enugu called Kenyatta,it was like a funny way they could connect to him.

After the tournament, Ikenna Eneh bought a blue Mercedes-Benz flat boot. We stayed in the same neighborhood at the time. When he fought with his elder brother Ziko, he used to run to my house and hide.
I followed Nigeria 99 bumper to bumper. Ikenna Eneh's mother used to come to our house to watch her son on TV.

I repeat, Yobo did not smell the pitch as a right back in 99.

I also watched some of the matches at the National stadium Lagos.

And you need a fatigue player due to jet lag when the chips are down? shocked grin

Iwobi was not impossing enough on the game. The only other player on the bench from the match day list that can play that position was Etebo plus Etebo has the ability to find the back of the net even from the unlikeliest of chances.

Besides, the jet lag issue is just a probability.
It may or may nt have affected him. So why not throw Etebo in when u depirately needed that goal.

I just do not get why Nigerians don't see anything wrong in not working on set pieces. Although i cannot blame them for the foul that led to the goal, Athletico were well skilled in the dark arts and just hunted fouls in our half. Overal these boys did very well, I left very happy with what i saw. I hope the clubs involved understand that they have gems on their hands and handle them with care.

We cannot call a standard liege player to play in the attack but we can call Etebor to play as a DM? We can call Chelsea's Dm to play AMf, we can call Chelsea's wing back to play as an out and out winger. Football is dynamic.
Funny enough you stated earlier that Yobo started as a striker at the start of his career.
What makes you think the local coaches still didn't see him as a player who could offer something in an uncoordinated attack we presented in that tourney?

Why didn't the screen shot I posted support your claim Disu stocked up our defence with an extra defender to protect the lead?
Why didn't the picture show we had 5 players at the back?
Is Yobo transparent that he could not be seen in the defence but he was in the defence? Is he a ghost?

Me said Yobo started as a striker. I never did. I did not even know that. I knew Yobo as a defender in Nigeria 99. Thought he played right back. Did not know Yobo until Nigeria 99.

I used to have the catalogue list of all the players of Nigeria 99. The local ones sold on the roads then.

be direct with your comments, don't try to be subtle. I didn't say Onazi was bad entirely, I said as a CMF he was bad, had it been that he was deployed to play as a DMF then he had a good 20-25 mins but then he wasn't, he was supposed to play as a CMF which he frankly didn't do justice to.

Now, the point is that Onazi should only play as a DMF for us, but then that means he will be vying for the same spot with Ndidi, no prizes for guessing who should be picked
smiles...you're one of the culprits because if u were the only one..I would have make mention of u...I have been following this thread since it's creation and before u joined.... I vividly say you don't like onazi... you've never praised for any good performance but swift to point out his faults. I read here how u criticise him during his play at uyo world cup qualifiers against Algeria... u even blame him fr that goal

Telling Etebo or Mikel to play Attacking midfield is a far cry from telling Leon Balogun to play number nine.

At Standard Liege he was a defender. I believe you watched a lot of Standard liege games to have seen him.
For the Flying Eagles, which I witnessed some of their games live at the stadium. At no point did Yobo play in defence.
Just like a Warri wolves fan would have been surprised seeing Etebor play as a DM against Algeria. Players play different roles for club and country in some cases.

The truth is that you did not know Yobo was a Standard Liège defender. Now you know. Finito like Finidi.

Yobo did not start his career as a defender. He was converted and further developed to the defender we all knew.hia elder brother was an out and out defender. He played for Rangers at a point. The last I heard about him, he was in Austria or Switzerland I think.

For all that they share in common there is of course one major difference. While Yobo’s undoubted talent is admired due to his consistency for both club and
country despite playing as a right back and an attacking midfielder in his international career
, his elegance made it look like he found even the toughest of tasks easy.

Tactics...... tactics .... counter tactics.... this is how a team wins trophies.... talent is never enough.

Like you said, Atletico were versed in the dark tactical arts of drawing fouls and playing on the eagerness of our boys to get the ball quickly.... this worked against us no doubt.

The Atletico coach knows he was up against a better team skillwise so he had to apply wickedly dark tactics.... they made good use of their heights too I suppose... (just saying because I saw some of their games and even their semi win over bidvest).

Anyway.... I am happy with the performance of the boys shaa.... they did well. When I remember they also dispatched Torino of Italy... then I say we have some fine young talents on our hands here...

I hope The LMC and NFF and clubs involved, just as you have suggested, combine to build on this and continue the nurturing of these kids alongside discovering even more.

Thanks for all the updates Sir Basco. smiley

Let me be sincere. I'll glad if that Burkina game is off.
Our boys are still recovering from the fight they had with the Lions we want to throw them in again to fight with the Stalions.

NFF should look for one league one or two club play abeg.

Atleast with that Rohr can start and assess Ebuehi and Obazee And also do some shuffling upfront or try a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation. I would also want to a 4-4-2 with Success and Iheanacho as the hitmen.

No Burkina friendly abeg. With dey did against Senegal they are good enough to beat Cameroun in Uyo, which is all we need to eliminate Cameroun.
I agree with u..... playing a club side will help in integrating the new players into the team properly

Go back to what I said, I said he was PRIMARILY deployed as a DMF, that means his main position was as a DMF. He played as a box to box CMF once in a while and even in those games he was the destroyer kinda CMF, and in many of those games he came in as a sub to sure up the game, you can't even describe that as a CMF. AMF?! No way!!! It was from you that I learnt that he played as an AMF during HIS DAYS IN THEIR ACADEMY OR SO.

His position chances according to the coach tactics.

He was registered as an attacking midfielder.

Na me tell you sa em dey play as AMF in the academy, the main reason he was drafted into the main team.
