Wilfred Ndidi's incredible assist from centre-back led him to become a Premier League star

The Nigeria international almost fell out of the game, but one moment of magic convinced scouts to invite him for a trial in Europe.

EXCLUSIVE

Wilfred Ndidi has become an important player for both Leicester City and Nigeria, but he could have ended up not making it in the professional game, if it wasn't for a moment of inspiration during his youth career.

Inside Pogba's mansion
The 20-year-old recently completed a £17 million move from Genk to Leicester City in January and he has since gone onto vindicate his decision to stay in football, despite being told by his father that he would be better off studying.

Ndidi, who is currently away with the Nigeria national team, revealed that he was the only one of 500 boys to be invited for a trial at Genk, who sent scouts to watch a Nigerian football tournament. As a central defender, it took an impressive assist, rather than a goal, to earn him his call up to play in Belgian first division.

"I didn’t score [to impress Genk], I was actually playing in central defence," Ndidi toldGoal. "I was told not to play long balls, so I just made a one-two and another one-two and then I gave a pass, made an assist.

"It was important because we were an academy, we played a team from the Nigerian Premier League [and we were only an academy], 3SC Shooting Stars, who were winning 1-0. I gave that pass and it made it 1-1.

"I was the only one selected out of 40 teams, 500 players. I had to go and do trials in Genk after that. Then I did the trials in Genk, After a year, they gave me a contract.

"It was difficult [coming to Europe] but I stayed with a family who tried to make me feel like I was at home. It was the time of the trial. So when I came home every day I felt like part of the family, it felt like home and made it easier."

Nigeria suffered disappointment by missing out on the African Cup of Nations qualification, but are hoping to rectify it by qualifying for the World Cup using a young squad that includes Ndidi.

Arsenal's Alex Iwobi and Manchester City's Kelechi Iheanacho are just two more young stars that Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr is looking to, while Ndidi is positive about his inclusion within the Nigeria set up.

"I always wanted to play for my country. I feel good, I feel so much fun in the national team," Added Ndidi. "I like seeing my friends and I feel good here but I never see myself as a very important player.

"I have always said to myself, anywhere I go, I can be replaced. So I just try to keep doing my very best. Keep focused. [The squad] have a lot in common. There’s a lot of guys around the team who are my ages so communication is easy.

"[Iwobi and Kelechi] have lots of strengths and play good football, you know, because of where they play and their experience. They have experience in Arsenal and City which is good for the country. They have a lot of skills and the future is good [for Nigeria]."

"I don’t think about the World Cup, I just feel we need to take every game as it is. That’s important. Fight for every point that we need, that way we can improve where we stand in the qualifiers and get to the World Cup.

"I have played in the junior World Cup, so I have that feeling about how the World Cup might look. I know the senior World Cup will be much more big. It would be good to feel that."

Rohr Sees Bright Future For New Eagles , To Scout NPFL Players

Super Eagles coach Gernor Rohr has expressed his satisfaction that the team was able to discover new talents despite the disappointment of not playing their scheduled friendly against Burkina Faso on Monday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Eagles were supposed to play two friendlies but ended up playing just one against Senegal last Thursday, which ended 1-1 at The Hive.

Unfortunately, the game against Burkina Faso was called off due to visa problems.

"We planned two international friendlies but could only play one. However, we were still able to do some work," Rohr was quoted by the Super Eagles official Twitter handle on Tuesday morning.

"We've been able to see some new players and young Nigerian talents here in the U.K., that could be part of our group in future."

Among the new players who were in camp with the Eagles were Chelsea's Ola Aina, Arsenal's Chuba Akpom, Isaac Success who plays for Watford, Olanrewaju Kayode of Austria Wien and the duo of Joel Bazee and Tyronne Ebuehi of Hannover 96 and ADO Den Haag respectively.

Rohr also revealed that he will return to Nigeria soon to scout for more players.

He added: "I'll be back in Lagos next week to watch some NPFL games and see some of our home stars in action as we continue to plan ahead."

Just look at the mentality of this young man..... this is why he keeps getting better. He doesn't relax or depend on his recent super performances or accolades. He just keeps going knowing it is current form that makes you stay relevant most times.

I pray his fine rate of development into a top player continues coz we have a truly world class player for the nearest future in this guy called Wilfred Onyinye "The Rock" Ndidi. smiley

@bolded in Sir Terzurum's post.... now there are three words for a player able to be selected from such competitive scouting process...... "Just so Special" wink

Leicester Boss Shakespeare Predicts Great Future For Ndidi

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare says he has been impressed with Wilfred Ndidi since the Nigeria midfielder arrived at the King Power Stadium in January, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Ndidi who has barely put a foot wrong since completing a
£15m move from Belgian side Genk in January has surpassed the expectations of his manager, settling in well at the club.
The Nigerian international has made 12 appearances in all competitions for Leicester and has scored once.

"Ndidi has a huge future in the game," Shakespeare was quoted on Leicestermercury.co.uk

"He is looking the part. He is a young boy but he has settled in really well. I think he has a huge future in the game.

"There was a lot of interest in him from other clubs but he was high on the list of our recruitment team and, in the end, we did really well to get him.

"He will be a big player for us.

"I think he will be a big player for us. He is made-to-measure for this league but he is humble and his personality is suited to our football club. He is easy to manage."

WILFRED NDIDI: HOW NIGERIA'S PREMIER LEAGUE STARS CAN PUSH SUPER EAGLES TOWARDS FIFA 2018 WORLD CUP

Leicester City and Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi believes the Super Eagles’ growing Premier League contingent could drive the team toward FIFA 2018 World Cup qualification.

Ndidi was part of the Nigeria squad scheduled to play
Burkina Faso in a friendly international at The Hive, home of English League Two team Barnet on Monday evening.

But Burkina Faso, the third-placed finisher at the recent
Africa Cup of Nations, could not field a team after seven of its players failed to secure visas in time. Barnet refunded ticket sales and Nigeria played a training game between its own squad that included Ndidi, Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Watford’s Isaac Success and Ola Aina of Chelsea. Chuba Akpom, the 21-year-old Arsenal forward and England Under-21 international on loan at Brighton in the English Championship, participated in the second half.

“It’s a nice thing. The players who play in the English Premier League are much more experienced and it strengthens the team,” Ndidi told Newsweek after the game when asked if elite-level experience could help Nigeria.

The team captain, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, did not travel from China for the friendly against Senegal last Thursday and the canceled Burkina Faso fixture, while Chelsea’s starting right-wingback Victor Moses did not join the squad because of injury.

“The progression is very nice. We still need to work hard—the coach [Gernot Rohr] also says you need to work hard towards every game,” Ndidi said of Nigeria’s momentum toward the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Rohr’s team plays its next competitive fixture against South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations 2019 qualifier on June 12. Two potentially pivotal World Cup qualifiers home and away against Cameroon loom at the end of August and start of September.

Leicester City and Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi at King Power Stadium, Leicester, January 14. Ndidi, 20, believes the number of Premier League players in Nigeria's squad will help the Super Eagles achieve success.

Ndidi has had a season of great highs and alarming lows in his first year in the Premier League, with Leicester’s Premier League title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri dismissed in February and Craig Shakespeare, his former assistant and temporary replacement, taking the team into a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid. But the 20-year-old said Leicester had stuck together through it.

“We have always tried to work towards our goal. Always in the dressing room, fighting for each other and everything. We try to encourage each other,” he said.

“I don’t know, I really don’t know,” Ndidi said when asked what Shakespeare had changed from Ranieri. “I just know that it’s football, so everything changes. Everything is going well. Everybody was sad to see [Ranieri] go.”

Bristol City's Tammy Abraham pulls off unbelievable rabona-like finish ahead of England under-21 clash with Denmark

The Chelsea loanee has netted 22 goals while on loan at BS3 this season

Tammy Abraham has netted 22 goals for Bristol City this season.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson no doubt breathed a sigh of relief as Tammy Abraham negotiated England’s Under-21 international friendly against Germany without mishap.

Recently recovered from a thigh injury and a key member of the Robins side battling relegation in the Sky Betc Championship, Abraham was handed another start by Aidy Boothroyd in Wiesbaden last Friday.

And the loan signing from Chelsea played the entire 90 minutes as England went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat in what was billed as a dress rehearsal for this summer’s European Championship finals in Poland.

And while Abraham - who could feature for the Young Lions on Tuesday night against Denmark - might not have added to his goal tally for England last week, he sure was in the mood just a few days later at training when it came to finding the back of the net.

England's Twitter handle posted some footage of Abraham executing some fine dribbling skills before scoring and tweeted the word 'wow' with it.

The 19-year-old brushed off what looks like Jack Grealish of Aston Villa before pinging the ball into the goal with a rabona-like finish.

NIGERIA WILL AVOID LONDON FOR FRIENDLIES AFTER BURKINA FASO VISA PROBLEMS: COACH GERNOT ROHR

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has claimed the Super Eagles will avoid future friendly internationals in London after the country’s game against Burkina Faso scheduled for Monday was canceled.

Burkina Faso, the third-placed finisher at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, had been expected to provide stiff opposition for Rohr’s team as it builds towards FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers in August and September against Cameroon.

But seven Burkina Faso players failed to secure visas so Nigeria held a training game among its own squad at The Hive, home of English League Two club Barnet.

“Yes, yes, because it’s too complicated to get the visas, you know,” Rohr, 63, said when asked after the training game if Nigeria could stay away from friendlies in the U.K. in future.

“I think it’s better to stay in Schengen, in Europe than go to London where the people have problems. Even some players in our team couldn’t come, you know. They didn’t get the visa in time.”

Rohr pointed out the positive aspects of Nigeria’s short trip to London, though, noting that the training exercise had allowed him to make a fuller evaluation of his squad.

“We tried to find another team but it was too late,” the German said.

“We had one very good game against a Senegal team [that was] so strong, so powerful, we learned a lot. Now we look forwards to our next games.

“The second game, between us, I could see everybody,” Rohr added. “Some players need to play because they don’t play all the time at their clubs. It was an opportunity for them.”

The strange situation allowed Rohr to see several of his star forwards at once, with Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City and Alex Iwobi of Arsenal lining up against Watford’s record signing Isaac Success, who made his debut against Senegal on Thursday.

We've been able to see some new players & young Nigerian talents here in the U.K., that could be part of our group in future.I'll be back in Lagos next week to watch some NPFL games & see some of our home stars in action as we continue to plan ahead."

Solanke and Tammy in the Team will be the stuff of dreams added to Osimhen (hoping he lives up to expectations) and Whosoever breaks through as time goes on.... #HotQualityCompetition

That way, Iheanacho will have to settle for his most effective role as a SS (second striker/support striker), False 9(if ever we use a formation that supports this role), AMF (his primary and most centralised role) and RWF (if we play 4-3-3).

note: Nacho won't just walk into those roles.... He will face competition also.

for instance... in the AMF role, there is Iwobi and Etebo also... in the Post Mikel era....

The match was played in place of a botched
friendly against Burkina Faso at the same
venue after seven Stallions players failed to
secure entry visas to fly into the United
Kingdom.
The game ended 1-1 with Kelechi Iheanacho
and Kayode Olanrewaju on target for both
sides.
Stand-in skipper Ogenyi Onazi led a Team ‘A’
side comprising of Daniel Akpeyi, Leon
Balogun, Ola Aina, William-Troost Ekong,
Elderson Echiejile, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro
Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Alex
Iwobi.
The Team ‘B’ side captained by Kenneth
Omeruo had Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal,
Tyronne Ebuehi at right-back, Chidozie
Awaziem, Juwon Oshaniwa at left-back,
Shehu Abudulahi, John Ogu in central
midfield, Kayode Olanrewaju, Isaac Success,
Ebere Eze.
According to Super Eagles media officer of
the team, Toyin Ibitoye, the game was a
good test for the squad.
He also told Completesportsnigeria.com
from the team’s camp in London that the
players were excited to represent the
country at international level.
Ibitoye also added that several foreign-born
players of Nigerian descent are eager to
play for the Super Eagles.
“The mood in camp is awesome and the
players coming in for the first time are fully
committed to representing Nigeria at the
international level so it’s a good omen for
the team,” Ibitoye reports.

I am tired of England b*tching every time they lose a player. France is feeding at least 5 countries in Africa with players without even a sound from them.

Others forming will learn from his misfourtune.

You are sure right about those two boys. They are Super Eagles Material but the chances of playing for Germany is tempting.

Rohr needs to work more to get these players through his German connections. grin

Competition is good for the team. I hope the best makes the team at the end of the day.

I totally agree with you on Iheanacho, he was more effective as a SS or AMF when he played.

We don't need to follow Man City to continue to play in as a Striker. The same way we ignored Chelsea and played Mikel d way he is useful for us.

Off course, he won't be giving automatic shirt but I guarantee he will be chosen ahead of the rest because of his goal ratio, though the goals he missed should be cause for but let us hope dust himself out of the badluck and gather. grin
