Denilson actually joined Arsenal as a 17 yr old. He used to be a very promising youngster. Being captain of Brazil of U17 side tells you how highly rated he was. That should tell you buying young footballers does not guarantee anything. Even the coveyour belt that was the Arsenal academy had lots of promising young players who won the FA youth league. Players like Frimpong, Wilshere, Chucks Aneke, Jay Emma Thomas, Diaby, Benik Afobe etc.
Nobody could have foretold none of these guys could have hit the heights years later judging, from how promising they were in there formative years.
Apart from Wilshere, which if these names you listed had the clout of Luka Modric? None. I watched Denilson in U17 and he did not have that kind of clout. That was Dos Santos, Anderson, Vela and Nuri Sahin's U17. All these were rated ahead of Denilson. Nothing stopped Wenger from signing the Superior talent. Modric was already hot. There is no defense in this.

Denilson was highly rated at 17. As a matter of fact, he captained all the Brazil youth teams he played for from U15's to U17. You're saying all these because you have the benefit of hindsight. The Brazilian U17 side he captained played up to the finals of the U17 world cup,the same tournament Arsenal scouted Fabregas from a few years earlier.
Even Diaby was super highly rated in France. They believed in him so much that whenever he is fit, he's always called up to the national team and he walked straight into the French first 11. Hindsight, hindsight, hindsight

If you knew how highly rated chucks Aneke was. Some Arsenal die hard fans still belive he has not left the club. They think Arsenal have a buy back clause in his contract. Go read up about the exploits of Chucks Aneke, Benik Afobe, Frimpong, Henry Lansbury and Co. Afobe scored 40 goals in a season at a point.

Wenger actually wanted to sign him with Eduardo back in 2007. He rejected it because he wanted to wait. He rejected both Arsenal and Barcelona. Harry Redknapp also said Wenger didn't go for him because he felt he was light weight. Let's be honest, it was a period when we had Cesc, Rosicky, Hleb, Diaby and they were on form then. He was meant to replace Rosicky who ended up staying.

At the end, Wenger ruled against Signing Modric and also Mandzukic. Whether he thought the young man was lightweight does not change the fact that he refused to sign Modric.

Denilson was not as hot as other players in that U17. Typical Wenger not to go for Sahin and opting for Denilson. Not fielding Vela even after a brilliant game playing for Osasuna against Madrid.

The latest goal-getter supposedly set to bolster Arsenal's armoury is Croatian international Mandzukic, who has netted 34 league goals in 65 outings for Zagreb, the former club of current Gunner Eduardo.

But Wenger has ruled out the possibility of teaming him up with his international strike-partner.

“No. You will hear a few names until the end of the transfer window without there being any truth in it,” he said.

“I am thinking about signing a striker but I must confess I am not close to doing anything because I do not find a player who can convince me.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger concedes he made a "huge mistake" in failing to sign Gareth Bale.

Wenger was tracking the Tottenham winger back when he was a young left-back at Southampton, alongside future Arsenal star Theo Walcott.

But while Walcott made the move Arsenal, Bale, now 23, headed to north-London rivals Tottenham, where he is now proving to be one of the best players in the country.

"We didn't take him as we had Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy and didn't want another left-back," Wenger told Al Jazeera Sport.

"I must confess it was a huge mistake as he can play in midfield. He struggled at the start at Tottenham, then they moved him to midfield and he has done exceptionally well.

And Wenger now says that Arsenal were pipped to the Jamaican-born star's signature by Liverpool after dragging their feet.

"We had many players on the flanks, but when Sterling was at QPR - that's where we should take the players," the Gunners boss rued.

"We watched him but you miss obvious players. The history of every club is full of top players that you missed. At the time Liverpool were quicker."

Denilson wouldn't captain all the youth teams he played for if he wasn't highly rated. Its just like the case of Musa mohamed. You don't captain your house at inter house sports if you're not good. The best players usually captain their school in inter school competition, that's how the system works at that level.
If you played high school football you will understand what am saying.
The problem with Vela was being too lightweight for the Premiership. He just couldn't cope with the physical demands. He went on to flourish in a more technical league is not a surprise to me. There was this goal he scored for Arsenal after a 24 pass move, he finished off the passing move with a deliberate chip on the keeper. That's the kind of finness he had in his locker. Put him against agriculture teams, they will kick lumps out of him.

In 2001 Arsenal agreed a £3m fee with his club at the time Malmo FF, Personal terms with Ibrahimovic were also agreed and his was even given the number 9 shirt (photo above) It all basically a done deal…Until it all went wrong.
Zlatan was sure the deal was done and even posed for photos with the number 9 shirt, He called his friends at Malmo and told them how happy he was to be signing for a great club like Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger then told Zlatan the deal was NOT done and that he would have to play in a trial match before he signed him as he was not 100% of his talents. Zlatan was so angry about this he refused to play in the game and walked out of the Arsenal training ground. Zlatan felt insulted by Wengers late decision and refused to go back as he knew there were other clubs who wanted him.

Malmo then sold Zlatan to Ajax and Arsenal signed Francis Jeffers for £8m, for almost 3x times as much as what they could have signed Zlatan.

So i wonder how wenger feels now knowing he picked Francis Jeffers over Zlatan Ibrahimovic and at more then double the price.

My Belle O! Rejected Ibrahimovic and signed Francis Jeffers.

When I watched Mikel Obi in 2005 World Youth Championship final, I screamed, "Maradona (who was in the stadium) can you see how to play the ten role?"

When I watched Nuri Sahin few weeks after that game playing in the 2005 U17, I murmured," This Boy is better than Mikel."

Denilson was never in the class of players like Dos Santos and Sahin. Only Wenger would do things like that.

Carragher believes Arsenal would have won the Premier League in at least two of the past three seasons if they had secured a deal for the Uruguayan.

He told the Daily Mail: "When Arsene Wenger looks back, how much do you think he regrets that £1? In July 2013, when Arsenal were pursuing Luis Suarez, how different would things have been had they made Liverpool a proper offer?

"Wenger and Arsenal were under the impression, remember, that a bid of more than £40million would take Suarez away from Liverpool but they took that to the extreme. By putting just £1 above the fee they thought would trigger a deal, it ensured business would never get done.

"If you look back at Wenger’s 20 years in English football, there are so many highlights, but that day in July 2013, with the bid that enraged Liverpool, cannot be ignored. Not signing Suarez is the biggest mistake of Wenger’s reign.

"Had Arsenal pushed the boundaries for Suarez, perhaps with an offer of £50m, I believe they would have won the Barclays Premier League in two of the last three seasons. That’s the thing about Suarez: whichever team he plays for, he drags them to a higher level."

That was one match, any team can lose on any given day. Remember we beat them in Sudan.

The tie before that also they laboured and left it late.

I started complaining right from when they started struggling to beat teams at that stage.

I can say I have never heard of a team that went through what Amunike's boys faced during camp. Not paid allowances from before the U17 qualifiers, to the qualifiers and then the tournament they won.

Then no allowances in their U20 Camp which comprised of most of the U17 winning team.

Why carry them to Teslim Balogun stadium instead of Calabar or Port Harcourt in such an important game? We failed Amunike and his boys.

Why Calabar or Portharcourt.

Can you support ur claim in anyway that they were not paid their allowances right from the U17 qualifiers?

Anderson played between the ten role and the left midfield role. He was clearly the best. I would never give Wenger stick for Anderson. He was hot then. He went to the Copa America after that U17, I think wearing the ten shirt and won it. The criticism is walking away from repeated hot targets. I wonder how Chygrinsky fits into walking away from a hot target.

I don't get the point you're trying to make. Bale was a full back at that time and let's be honest, Cole and Gibbs were much better. Bale as a full back almost got sold when he was at Tottenham till Redknapp moved him to the wing. Nuri Sahin was approached twice but he rejected arsenal the first time and Madrid and Mou screwed Wenger up the second time. Hindsight is a very beautiful thing. As for Ibra, we already had technical forwards and what arsenal fans were crying out for was a penalty box poacher, that's why they got Jeffers. If anything, I was pissed he didn't get Van Nistelrooy when he had the chance to. As for cr7, arsenal simply couldn't afford him at that time.

Denilson is the real definition of a street kid who football gave an escape, just the type you advocated for yesterday. I wonder how you could question the talent of a kid from such background who broke into the Sao palo Copa libertodores winners team at 17.
Brazil youth team captain from the U15's to U17. You're talking about a player with rising profile, why you will blame a club for looking at such a player is lost on me.

Rohr On Alert As German- Nigerian Left Back Target Torunarigha Shines For Hertha Berlin

The search by the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr for options at left full back might be coming to an end following the giant leap made by German-Nigerian left back Jordan Torunarigha.

Presently Rohr has been unsuccessful in his search for a credible back up for first choice and second vice captain Elderson Echiejile, as Kingsley Madu has failed to provide the kind of challenge the manager wants for the Sporting Gijon man.

Torunarigha has been on the manager’s watch list for a while, and last night the German-Nigerian full back made his first team bow by playing for 27 minutes in their 1-3 loss to Hoffeinheim in the Bundesliga.

He was introduced for Vedad Ibisevic and despite coming on with his team under pressure, the 19 year old who is proud of his Nigerian heritage, as he has the country’s flag on the header of his instagram account gave a good impression of himself.

Although he has represented England at youth level he qualifies to play for Nigeria through his dad Ojokojo Torunarigha who played for Nigeria League side Shooting Stars years ago.

Exclusive – Chelsea Loanee Omeruo Included By Conte In His Pre Season Plans

On loan Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo has been offered a spot in Chelsea’s pre season squad, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Omeruo left Chelsea for another loan spell in Turkey with Alanyaspor, but signed an extension before leaving for what was his fourth consecutive loan spell away from the club.

He was coerced into signing the extension by coach Antonio Conte, who promised him a spot in his team when pre season training commences before the start of next season.

Omeruo has played his own part in the bargain by cementing a spot in the Alanyaspor side, and will now be given the chance to fight for a first team spot by Conte.

The Nigerian was on the verge of breaking into the first team of Chelsea in 2014 but an unfortunate shoulder injury which ruled him out for three months denied him the chance to impress then manager Jose Mourinho.

However with club captain John Terry set to depart the Blues this summer, Omeruo and Kurt Zouma will be given the chance to push as his replacement before Chelsea start any transfer business in central defence.

Spalleti Explains Why Nura Abdullahi Didn’t Make Roma Bow Against Empoli

An explanation as to why highly rated Nigerian teen back Nura Abdullahi didn’t make his debut for Serie A side Roma against Empoli has been provided by Luciano Spalleti.

The Roma boss included the Nigerian in his matchday squad for the first time this season, as the highly rated 19 year old has fully recovered from the numerous injuries and fitness issues that has slowed him down.

However, he didn’t get to make his debut as expected as Roma cruised to a 2-0 win over Empoli, courtesy of goals from forward Edin Dzeko with Nura left on the bench for the entire duration of the game.

”Nura was a bit unfortunate yesterday. The plan was for him to play some minutes but the coach was forced into making a substitution in defence which caused Nura his debut”, Nura intermediary told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”Federico Fazio felt some pains in his legs and has to be replaced by another central defender with five minutes left to play that substitution plus other factors in the mind of the coach denied Nura his first team bow with Roma, He is aware of this explanation from the coach”.

Neville – Chelsea Looked Unorganised At The Back Without Victor Moses

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville says the absence of Victor Moses played a part in Chelsea losing 1-2 at Stamford Bridge to Stoke City in a Premier League clash.

Neville who was in the studio as an analyst during the course of the game faulted the way Chelsea were lined up in defence without the Nigerian, who was missing through injury.

”The change of tactics and the absence of some players didn’t work as planned by coach Antonio Conte. Victor Moses was badly missed, they looked unconvincing and disorganised at the back without Moses”, Neville said.

”Wilfred Zaha had a field day running at the full backs of Chelsea, he had little to do defensively because there was no player opening the game up like Moses would have done for Chelsea.

”Willian brought a bit of spark to the attack when he was introduced but at that time Crystal Palace were all about protecting their 2-1 lead which they did at the end of the game”.

You cant tell me that u dnt know that the Teslim Balogun stadium has abt the best artificial pitch in Nigeria.

The issue was not the Pitch bt the heavy rain that took place hours before and during the match.
Now dnt raise an issue of poor drainage in the Teslim Balogun stadium bc the PH and Calabar stadiums are not any better.

To your second paragraph, that statement u jst made is not an evidence that the boys were not paid their U17 qualification allowances.

Portland Timbers Adi : Nigerians Are Like Brazillians, We Can Do Crazy Things With The Ball

Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi would enter the club’s history books on Sunday if he finds the net against New England Revolution at Providence Park in the MLS.

Adi has tallied 45 goals since his arrival from FC Copenhagen in 2014, and needs one more goal to break the all-time goals record by a Timbers player.

The attacker believes much of his success comes from a love of the game started while playing on the streets in Benue.

“Nigerians are a little bit like Brazilians – we play street football a lot, ” Adi told mlssoccer.com.

“In street football you just learn from nature because there’s nobody coaching you, so you do crazy things with the ball. You use your imagination.”

The Gboko South Academy product started his career as a goalkeeper before he was converted into a striker.

ADO Den Haag Coach: Super Eagles Are A Team With Big Names, Ebuehi Will Improve

ADO Den Haag coach Alfons Groenendijk has declared that Tyronne Ebuehi is still learning his craft, but he is confident that the right wing-back will get better if he spends more time with the Super Eagles stars.

The Dutch-born defender trained with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo during the international break and watched from the bench as the national team were held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal on March 23.

Speaking at a press conference before the Eredivisie clash versus Roda, Groenendijk stated : “He has spent the past week with the Nigerian national team and left a good impression, a squad with big names.

“Let us nurture this kind of guys, a lot of fun to be with a club like ADO Den Haag.”

This season, Tyronne Ebuehi has started 20 out of a possible 27 games in the Netherlands top division, scoring one goal and picking up four yellow cards in 1,855 minutes of action.
