Uruguay is set to become the first country in the world to legally sell cannabis for recreational use after the final stages of the three-year processof legalizing the drug was reached.

The new law will authorize pharmacies across the South American nation tobegin selling the substance as of July, presidential aide Juan Andres Roballo told a press conference on Thursday.

The government hopes the formalization process will 'guarantee the quality and the purity of the product,' Mr Roballo added.

The cannabis sold in pharmacies will be grown by producers licensed by the state.

'This is not to promote it, but to compete with the informal market,' he said.

The law requires buyers to be aged at least 18-years-of-age and to sign up to a national registry, which Mr Roballo said would be up and running by May 2.

The price will be £1.00 per gram.

Registrants who must be Uruguayan citizens or permanent residents can purchase up to a maximum of 40 grams (1.4 ounces) per month though 10-gram containers are expected to be introduced later.

The country has stockpiled a total of 400 kilograms (882 lb) to be dispensed by pharmacies, an amount that could increase depending on demand, Mr Roballo said.

Sixteen pharmacies have registered with the government of the tiny country, that shares a borders with Argentina and Brazil, to be able to sell marijuana for recreational purposes.
