A combination of both aircrafts isn't bad.

Ghana has signed a deal with Brazil's jet maker Embraer Defense and Security Company to provide Ghana with five A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircrafts, including training for pilots and mechanics.

Even though the company will not disclose the amount involved, industry figures suggest the deal is worth over $106.75 million as each aircraft is estimated to cost about $21.35 million.

In September last year, Embraer delivered the first of 20 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the US Air Force, for use in Afghanistan after the NATO troop withdrawal at the cost of $427 million.

Dividing $427 million by 20 translates into $21.35 million for one aircraft.

According to a statement on Embraer Defense & Security website, the contract with Ghana will come into effect once certain conditions expected to be fulfilled during the second half of 2015 are sealed.

The planes will be used in advanced training, border surveillance and internal security missions in Ghana, Embraer said in a statement.

The contract includes logistic support for the operation of these aircraft as well as the set up of a training system for pilots and mechanics in Ghana that will provide the autonomy of the Ghana Air Force in preparing qualified personnel.

“We are pleased to welcome Ghana Air Force as a new operator of the Super Tucano, an aircraft that is already consolidated in the global market, expanding our presence in Africa,” said Jackson Schneider, President of Embraer Defense & Security.

“We are confident that with this acquisition, the Air Force of Ghana will be equipped with the most appropriate and proven solution to attend its operational needs,” it said.

According to the company, the A-29 Super Tucano is currently used by 10 air forces in three continents. It was also selected by the United States Air Force (USAF) for its Light Air Support (LAS) programme.

It said after more than 10 years in action, the Super Tucano has gained an excellent performance record with over 230,000 flight hours and 30,000 combat hours.

Embraer said it has received more than 210 firm orders and has delivered more than 190 aircraft.

The Super Tucano is a robust and powerful turboprop aircraft capable of carrying out a wide range of missions, including close air support and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

With more than 130 weapons configurations certified, it is equipped with advanced electronic, electro-optic, infrared and laser system technologies, as well as secure radio systems with data links and unrivalled munitions capacity.

The Super Tucano is the only combat proven and fully operational light attack/advanced training aircraft in the global market.

This makes it highly reliable and allows for an excellent cost-benefit ratio for a wide range of military missions, even operating from unpaved runways and in hostile environments.

The A-29 Super Tucano Aircraft or Embraer EMB 314 is an enhanced version of the EMB-312 Tucano trainer aircraft, but can cruise at faster speed and higher altitude.

The aircraft is capable of carrying general-purpose bombs and guided air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. It is armed with two wing-mounted 12.7mm machine guns with a rate of fire of 1,100 rounds a minute.

With more than 130 weapons configurations certified, the aircraft features advanced electronic, electro-optic, infrared and laser system technologies, as well as secure radio systems with data links and unrivalled munitions capacity.

That's walk away cost. The Gripen costs 70 million a unit. That's just crazy!!

The Gripen is a good fighter, but not at 70 million.

50 million for a turbo-prop is also outrageous, but when you consider the plane would be flying for 30 - 35 years on that cost, it doesn't seem much.

However let us wait and see, newspaper articles based on hearsay doesn't equal fact.
Do you have the contract stipulating precisely what the purchase price includes?? Or are you just speculating??

The price for our Gripen included training and maintenance....of which the maintenance contract was renewed a few years ago. And we paid 65 mil and the Gripen is worth every penny.

Even if the price includes 30 years of service(which i highly doubt) it still wont get to 50mil......maintenance for a smallprop aircraft is about half a million a year give or take.

The general idea of the SAAF Gripen contract is known. The contract for the A-29 is not known.

I doubt if your Gripen contract included training, you have been unable to produce any decent amount of pilots for a fighter which is easy to fly, as SAAB claims.

No Sir, the Gripen should not be worth above 25 million dollars, based on available facts and when compared to other aircrafts in its class.

I'm going to leave it at this.

The answer is simple bro. We have to pay for the 59 tomahawk missiles used in Syria with some extra yet to be used before getting the propeller plane.

Can someone tell me why Afghanistan got 20 for 400+ million plus maintenance and training and Nigeria would get 12 of the same jet for 600 million. Are we getting technology transfer?

This is really funny.

Actually our contract dit include training....its well documented , our pilots were sent to seweden in the early 2000s years before the first gripen arrived and just after we signed the contract in 1999.

14 Gripen pilots and 52 hawk pilots have been trained...and besides from being finacially unfeasable the reasons we dont have a full complement of 26 gripen pilots is well documented.

Well its good you admitted you are not an expert, since the experts at the royal thai airforce chose the Gripen over the su30 which is much cheaper and much better according to you.

You are as confused as they come, clearly.

Come back and talk to me when there is verifiable....... Any evidence at all that the SAAF has more than 9 Gripen pilots.

The easy plane to fly has become an herculean task for the SAAF.

Yeah, because MONEY has nothing to do with it, jackass.

13 Pilots is more than decent considering the number of pilots you have for 4th gen is ZERO and the number of 4th Gen you have ordered is THREE

Because you are a fvcking biased idiot who has no idea what he is talking about

"He argues that the Gripen won the [South African] Alfa competition because of price (fly-away price, complete package price), life-cycle costs and financing"
http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/print-version/the-air-forces-gripen-fighters-are-delivering-operationally-and-industrially-2012-06-15

The operational cost of the Swedish Saab Gripen aircraft is the lowest among a flightline of modern fighters, confirmed a White Paper submitted by the respected international defense publishing group IHS Jane’s, in response to a study commissioned by Saab.
http://www.stratpost.com/gripen-operational-cost-lowest-of-all-western-fighters-janes/

Gripen is the most cost effective platform, fact.

Stop comparing a 4th Gen swing-role net-centric fighters to 3rd gen interceptors, 'tard.

To be honest the A109 is the only thing we got from the arms deal that I am not wild about.

Its... an awkward platform. Its like halfway between an Alouette and an Oryx... weird size.

I have allways wondered why we didnt just get more Lynx's instead... or BK117's
