eniolaamoda: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor A vetinary doctor is not a medical doctor....nothing in common Dentistry is a wide area of Medicine. It's an area of Medicine just like gynecology, neurology , cardiology, respiratory, urology, ophthalmology . etc. Because dentistry is wide, there are many specialties where one can specialize under dentistry just like all those specialties I mentioned above.same courses till part 5 but more dental course for those studying dentistry. That's why some people believe that dentistry is more difficult than medicine....because of these extra dental courses. 1 Like |

Hmmm....I'll say dentistry. My reasoning.... dentists are not as common as doctors. Since most people go to dentists in times of emergencies. .... toothache wouldn't allow them to go shopping dentists or haggling costs...nor finding herbal remedies. Then setting up a private practice. ...overhead costs would not be that much nor would you have to depend on others as much for tests and tests results. Then I guess in dentistry upgrades in practices are wayyy slower and you need not be studying like all the time to keep pace with the changes... new drugs... discontinued drugs..etc.... but what do I know?....not in medical field period. |

DrSuleiman100: If it's not medicine and surgery it can never be. Keep all those trash to urself. True medical doctors know these things even though they keep quiet not to sound proud. I am Sgt Ponzi Hater and I give respect to who it is due. Respect is due to physician because they risk their life's everyday, have countless calls and several sleepless nights to ensure that people are kept alive. I can't allow a BDS graduate with less hard work, less respect, less sleepless night, lighter work schedule and very lower demand come here and rub shoulders with those physicians and surgeons. Remember to become the physician, gynaecologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, neurosurgeon u claim are in the same specialty as dentistry they all have one thing in common they all have MBBS or MD or MBcH degrees, so they all have the same first degree and thus speak a common language. Dentist no matter their specialty don't have the same first degree or root as the other specialty and are such a distinct course of its own just like nursing, optometry, radiography and pharmacy. So get it into ur calcified brain that I am very well informed. Sgt Ponzi Hater 2017 |

sgtponzihater: I think you are getting it all wrong Mr ponzi hater. one can also specialize in dentistry after first degree to become a consultant in any specialties under dentistry depending on what area you like. my uncle who is a dentist was celebrated after The first degree as a doctor. few years later he became consultant..I can't remember his own area. and they are also very busy because his wife always complains anytime I visit them that they always Call him for emergency cases especially before he became a consultant. I think some specialties are busier than the other. and I think the fact that they Call him means he should come and save life. also some specialties under medicine are less busy....like Opthalmology, radiology, mental health and possibly Endocrine but that does not mean they're not important or not doctors. Thanks. 4 Likes |

sgtponzihater Do you know that it is easier for a Dentist to get an MBBS than for a Medical Doctor to get a BDS? It is easier in the sense that it takes a shorter period of time, like about 18 months or so! And do you also know you can't have license to practice the two courses at the same time? You keep on talking of respect, Mr Man, is your respect adding any kobo to our accounts? The people that matter respect us, the health care system respects us, the government respects us, reasonable people respects us! Even the medical doctors respect us because we went through the same stress. Should we now start peeing on our pants because one daft, ignorant cretin on Nairaland has decided to be a nuisance even after many people have corrected him, and more information are at his fingertips on the Internet? Hell No! No one cares about you or your opinion... If you are that pained, why not write letters to the government asking them to stop paying both professions the same salary? Or perhaps you could just pick up placards and start a one-man protest! 5 Likes |

DrSuleiman100:That you are a dental surgeon does not and will not make you know 80% of what medical doctors know. There is a reason that people are called specialists, because they are well versed and adept in the specialty. I dunno what Part 5 is, whether it is an undergraduate exam, which I feel it is, but even when you have just graduated with MBBS, you have barely scratched the surface of medicine. You are just someone who should know what to do after clerking+examination, manage and make a referral if need be. Do you know that a detailed text on Diabetes, which you preached to know so much, or even something as common as meningitis can fill a small library, and you are claiming to know 80%. If you know 80%, there is no need for specialisation. Of course, medicine is system based. You treat your patient as a whole. That's why a doctor should know something about every system and everything. I won't want to join words with you and return insults, but I am surprised that you did insult me, being a 'doctor' that you claim to be. Apparently, you were not trained in character but just academically. You are not the only doctor on nairaland. That I am a medical doctor would not make me claim to know even 30% of what a dental surgeon knows. I knew enough about the your discipline to pass through school way comfortably, but I won't claim to know even half of what you know. It is this kind of 'know all' attitudes that creates scenarios at times that makes the public roast us. THE GOOD DOCTOR IS ONE WHO KNOWS WHEN TO REFER, SIMPLY BECAUSE HE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HE KNOWS LITTLE OF WHAT THE PERSON HE IS REFERRING KNOWS. Almighty Dental surgeon my foot. |

ElPhoche: You are confusing me now with these words u typed. A doctor told me dentist are doctors are almost the same. Another told me medicine is so wide dentists are actually locked out of the excitement and thrills of clinical and ward practice and you can't claim to be a physician of you don't have MBBS. So I don't just get anymore. |

sgtponzihater:I didn't say a dentist isn't a doctor. In fact, registering body for doctors in the country is called Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. During the NMA meetings, you have dentists in attendance. It was just the way that the guy was talking and showing himself that annoyed me. Matter of fact, he know less than 30% of what 'doctors' according to him know. Na this same attitude that someone who studied anatomy will come out and be forming 'we know what they know. Didn't we do Anatomy, biochemistry and physiology together?'. If e not be panadol, e no be panadol. Simple and short |

Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Nobody: 9:21am On Apr 11, 2017 |
ElPhoche: Yes but MBBS, MBcH, MD all have the same training and indexing. For example while PLAB is extrance for physicians into the UK, dentist don't and can't do PLAB. USMLE is written by medical doctors in the US while Dentist are not qualified to write that exams. Also most dentist in 1st world countries are regulated by a dental council. It is only in Nigeria that there is MDCN, in fact there is a Dental council in Nigeria and with time they will ask for cessation from MDCN. My simply leaning was MBBS and BDS are 2 separate and distinct courses. Both are doctors but medical doctors are MBBS holders. In fact General Medical Council (GMC) regulate medical practice in the UK, while General Dental Council (GDC) regulate dental practice in the UK. Same pattern goes for the US and other advanced countries. Its only in Nigeria they are placed in the same umbrella. Though it is clearly dileaneated Medical ( relating to MBBS) and Dental (relating to dentist) council of Nigeria, thus the medical can call themselves medical doctors and thus the dental should be proud of bearing the term Dentist or Dental doctors instead of becoming cry babies or claiming the same knowledge or qualifications as medical doctors. Sgt Ponzi Hater. Pls read them above statement carefully and tell me where I erred. Even teaching hospitals requesting for interns use medical house officers and dental house officers as request. The internship of a dentist doesnt have med/Surg/OnG/Paed and is quite shorter. Pls the dentist in Nigeria only have ego problem. |
Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Mikolion87(m): 10:16am On Apr 11, 2017 |
sgtponzihater: let me enlighten you a bit in case you're ignorant, that's probably why you think dentists (atleast in Nigeria) don't have as much knowledge of the human body as the "medical doctor". The term medical doctor is only a nomenclature for category of professionals trained in Medicine. And in case you don't know, in Nigeria (at least), dentists are also trained in medicine. They also write the MBBS exams (except the 4th) and then add to it, BDS exams (which medicine students don't write). Dentists are defficient in O and G just as their medical colleagues are defficient in the oro-dental and maxillofacial knowledge. So in essence, dental students are actually also medical students but with special emphasis or interest in the mouth and maxillofacial region. Owing to their training in medicine, nomenclaturally, they are medical doctors as well (in Nigeria) but dental surgeons by specialty. You should probably check out the curriculum of dentistry/dental surgery. That's why they are also Fellows of the West African College of Surgeons and the likes.. And paid the same salary as their colleagues in public service, belong to same associations. Who is lame to say a surgeon is not a medical doctor, no matter the area of surgery? 3 Likes |

Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Mikolion87(m): 10:51am On Apr 11, 2017 |
davidif: A lot of people need a lot of enlightenment. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is primarily a dental specialty. One can get into it with only a dental degree (BDS, DDS,DMD). In the western world, the specialty is usually done for four years after dental school. But in some countries (like the US) one can opt for the 6yrs postgraduate programme which grants one a medical degree as well ( MD) on completion. In essence, dental degree is a prerequisite to getting into the programme but never a medical degree. |

ElPhoche: Are you serious? Are you even a doctor or you are just a health practitioner who is trying to form I-too-know? How dare you compare the Medical and Dental relationship with Basic Medical courses? Are you trying to imply that the medical doctors know more anatomy, physiology and MBC than their Dental counterparts? If that's what you mean, then cursed are you! You must be more stupid than I thought! For Petes sake, we both learned this courses under the same conditions, we wrote and passed the examination on this courses under the same conditions and you are here comparing us to anatomy students? In clinical school, we both do pathology and pharmacology together, write and pass the examination under the same conditions! At this level, We have spent 4 years together and in my school 5 years because 400l is for 2 years! In 500L, we officially separate, the dentals proceed to do Medicine and Surgery! So basically, the only courses Medics do that we don't are O&G, pediatrics and Mental health! So how did you come to the conclusion that we know less than 30% of what Medics know? 5 Likes |
Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Nobody: 11:14am On Apr 11, 2017 |
homesteady: All this stuff u are saying doesn't make u a medical doctor. Nurses do all the courses doctors do plus extras so should they claim to doctors. You are a mere dentist and can be rendered to as doctors but still doesn't make u a medical doctor period. Sgt Ponzi Hater. |
Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Mikolion87(m): 12:38pm On Apr 11, 2017 |
sgtponzihater: I thought you just apologized some comments ago and claimed you've been educated about dentistry which you admitted you lacked. It is now very obvious you don't want to learn at all due to your hatred for dental surgeons for whatever reason, and adamantly resisting enlightenment. I doubt if you're a medical student, because if you are, you'll never segregate against someone you hustled together with in the medical school, writing MBBS exams with, just because his degree is BDS. BDS is equal to MBBS exams(minus 4th MB) plus dental surgery exams. And yes during internship, they do not rotate in other fields of medicine but they do so during residency. And you cannot compare a nurse with a dentist, because unlike dentists, they do not write MBBS exams let alone BDS.. BTW, dental training in Nigeria is different from that obtainable in most western countries. The introduction of medicine and surgery to the dental curriculum makes Nigerian dentists medical doctors.. Moreover, the eye or liver or the brain cannot say to the mouth, you're not a member of the body or that you're not important. And who says dentists are not life savers as well. Have you had a tooth ache before, aggresive periodontitis, or have you ever seen patients with facial or mandibular fractures or tumours. I believe these patients will not take it funny when you say a dentist is not a life saver. If this is not enough to make you enlightened, my brother, you're on your own |
Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Nobody: 12:51pm On Apr 11, 2017 |
Mikolion87: So u are trained to be a local champion and not fit in the international picture. I apologised but wen I called a dentist in the UK he informed me that he is still a doctor but is not regulated by the medical council but the dental council and thus not a medical doctor per say. He then explained that dentistry is unique from medicine. So I found dentists in Nigeria have low self esteem issues. They probably wanted MBBS. But I know better now because he told me with time dentist myt carve out their body the way it is all over the world except they want to remain backward and subservient as they are now. Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Mikolion87(m): 1:55pm On Apr 11, 2017 |
I think the problem is that, dental surgeons are very few in Nigeria and most people do not know about the academic requirement of dentistry. Because most dental surgeons do not talk much about their profession, and most dental students are so busy with medical and dental postings or exams and hence too busy to enlighten the public. Most people do not even know that dental students write same MBBS exams as medical students organized by Faculty of Medical science and then dental surgery (BDS) exams organized by Faculty of Dentistry.. The only difference is that they commence their specialty from undergraduate level and still undergo a postgraduate to specialize in any of about nine specialties(oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, periodontics etc) at the West African College of Surgeons while for their medical counterparts, you commence only after the undergraduate in medicine.. In the postgraduate Medical college in Nigeria( college of surgeons), you have different Faculties: orthopaedics, O and G, ENT, Opthalmology, surgery, Internal medicine, Dental surgery (for Dentists)... So, they are all considered as one (atleast here in Nigeria). They all have set of skills that distinguishes them as doctors and make them unique, so one cannot claim dorminance over the other. Now, one should decide which field to specialize so as to become profficient in that field (whether med or dent) and become a consultant in their field. It's wrong for a neurosurgeon to say a dermatologist is not important, or an ophthalmologist to say a dental surgeon is not important. Because when he has a dental or maxillofacial problem, he does not go to see a ophthalmologist, but a dentist.. So, they are all doctors and deserve the right to be because they have the knowledge and unique set of skills which the other does not have. This should be enough to enlighten whoever, unless one's case is irredeemable 3 Likes |

Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Mikolion87(m): 2:06pm On Apr 11, 2017 |
sgtponzihater: The fact is that, the mouth cannot be separated from the whole body.. So dentistry will always remain a part of human medicine, hence dentists remain doctors. BTW, you should have called this dentist friend of yours before making some of the hate comments you made here. You were so wrong. And yes, I have seen so many dentists and none appear to have low self esteem issues. You do not have that when you're living well financially and still enjoy a balance between work and family life. It's people like you who like to talk down against dentists and misinform the public that we protect the public from. 'Doctors' and dentists in Nigeria are partners and same and no one looks down on each other. |

Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by Nobody: 3:52pm On Apr 11, 2017 |
homesteady: I withdrew my apologies because I know the truth now. Dental training very distinct yertotally different from that of a medical doctor (MBBS). Thus while dentists are doctors they remain dental doctors and cannot be called medical doctors even in the US and UK. It's still a matter of legislation even in some states abroad whether to regard them as doctors. Even the Dentists I know don't have as much self esteem as the ones here. When an uncle had an issue I asked a Dentist and he advised me to go to LUTH to see the medics that he is a dentist. Stop claiming what u are not. There was a post on Nairaland when nurses also claimed all the same training as medical doctors. Even the medicine and Surgery MB they write have different marking preference and sometimes cut off marks. And the practical part is either not done or not strict. I stand for the truth.
