South Africa was in existence centuries ago before colonialism as a whole started in Africa. They where even among the countries formerly known as 'Dominions' which pioneered the formation of the Common wealth of Nations.

There are two basic reasons why SA is ahead of Nigeria in infrastructural development. first is because of their existence as a territory long before Civilization and colonialism came to other African countries, second is the undeniable presence of the whites in large numbers there. To be fair, all those countries are better developed societies than the US. The average citizen of countries like Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada etc have higher standards of living than the US.
