To buttress what many others have said especially about drinking water... To be specific she should drink two liters of water first thing in the morning.

She should not eat anything before and one hour after.

30 minutes before eating any meal she should also drink water

Let her take lots of honey too. Mix the water with plenty of honey

May God hall her and make life more bearable

Most times , there are triggers. Avoid the triggers. U might need to monitor her closely to know. No undue exercise, swimming, exposure to cold, mosquitoes, skipping of meals, stress. She should take enough water-min of 3l per day, eat well and constantly be on folic acid and reludrin and bath with hot water. Above all, prayer work wonders.

Hello websurfer, so sorry for the pains your sister has had to go through.they are indeed warriors.
A lot of people don't know this but there is a sickle-cell foundation directly opposite Luth at idi araba. There is a drug , you can Google it hydroxyl urea which reduces tremendously the amount of sickle cell in the blood which makes them sickly and she can take palodrine it is a malaria preventive drug , but please please don't self medicate so take her to the foundation, she will be attended to by doctors who are specialists they will run some tests and administer the right medications ,it is not expensive at all,and the drugs are more affordable if you get it there.
If you have any question don't hesitate to ask. My email is
Floxynap@yahoo.com
God bless you for caring for your sis.
Ps. Let her drink lots of water, stay in ventilated places and try not to eat late at night, very important.
Thank you very much, but she is in Delta abd very far away from Lagos.

Dont know how exactly these tests go, wish it was like measurements that can be taken from a tailor with the aim of giving to another to take care of because of distance

Op, I don't know if you're a Christian but after seeing this post I have a feeling it's a solved issue. Kindly look up to God. Make a vow and have a heart touching discussion with him.

Greater is he who is in his daughter (your sister) than he who is in the world. She'll be healed.

You shall open a new thread on her health with joy. Please don't forget to mention me when that happens very soon.

Please i need help on suggestions on how to cope with my sister who happened to be an SS, shes almost 17 now but this frequent illness and blood shortages have always come up from time to time always leaving us in fear due to the height of pains and sorrows my sister pass through each time.

recently, she got down with malaria again, the doctor always prescribes drugs and all that whenever this happens but recently, she's complaining they are not working.

Please help with suggestions because we are really confused on what to do and cannot become ignorant.

We can't afford to loose such a rare gem and the brightest brain in our family.
I strongly belief that being SS doesn't mean having your death warrant hanging. There's nothing God cannot do. My Technician will be 50 years this year. He's not even looking SS. Tell your sister to pray to God for help and divine touch. Also tell her to be heating proteinous food, vegetable soup and encourage her to be drinking vital milk. My Technician walks like every other human being . With God, all things are possible. Cheers

Sickle cell is a condition best managed in a patient with a limited chance of rbcs sickling and sticking together.
Its also wise to keep the patient in a deliberate state of iron deficiency. Low serum iron decreases the incidence of vaso occlusive attack - known as crises.

The patients should avoid heavy exercise and sudden changes in temperature. A number of natural supplement have been found to be an inexpensive way of keeping the patient infection free while prompting a healthy appearance.

Malaria prophylactic, weekly

B12 supplement (methylcobalamine), daily

garlic , if not raw get the dry powder

- zinc , daily

- water 10 glasses daily

- Potassium iodide supplement, daily

- black pepper and ginger supplement at least 4 times a week (mild pains and depression)

Avoid

AVOID ANY SITUATION THAT WILL CAUSE INFECTION, INFECTION IS A COMMON CAUSE OF DEATH IN SCD PATIENT.

SCD SUFFERERS HAVE RELATIVELY LOW immunity. AUTOSPLENECTOMY, HYPOSPLENISM AND LOW IMMUNE FACTOR PROTEIN IS THE MAJOR CAUSE.

SALMONELLA (TYPHOID) IS BIG KILLER OF SCD IN NIGERIA.

-Fatty foods

-Green leafy soups, habitual consumption

- Cold wet weather

- Exercise

- dehydration

- injury to your joints

In my early 30's...and getting stronger...

Yes.. That's the stage she is gonna struggle with this thing called sickle... Once she survived this stage.. There is nothing she wouldn't overcome after this stage.

Let her take drip.. To flush the veins.. And after that.. Press her joints with hot water.. Morning and evening..
Always keep hot water available... And make sure she drinks hot water every minute.. Take it with the drugs.. Don't use cold water for her in anything for now..

While I was seventy.. I had this tube which my mum used to store hot water and places it beside me every night.. To keep me warm.. When the blood is warm... The bone is hot.. The blood can flow through the vein smoothly... And it won't cost her pains

Doctors should inject her with a drug(don't wanna mention it here) it kills pains faster.. Meet a good doctor that knows about sickle cell... He would know the drugs.

Tell her to take fluid all the time... And pls.. Always massage her body gently... Especially the toes.. Stretch them for her... Massage it with aboniki rub.... Massage her joints gently with the rub... Pet her very often and make her do what she loves most to distract her from the pains....

I give her 2days if you follow these prescription.. She will be fine. Am in delta state too.. Where exactly are you guys?

Thank you for this post but in question of blood tonic, how does she cope with the blood loss or decrease almost everytime this illness comes up

take that advise seriously except the ugwu part cos ugwu contains iron.

SS patients have too much Iron in their system already.

She should

1. Take at least 4-5litres of water daily(most important)

2. Avoid mosquitos like a plague.
(use mosquito net)

3. Avoid anything cold. From cold drinks to cold weather. It causes their crisis because their blood freezes easily.

4. Take Folic acid, Multivite and B.complex regularly.

5. Have original aboniki handy at all times.

6. Avoid blood tonics of any form and anything that contains iron.

7. She can take malt drinks once in a while in place of blood tonics.

For pains, Diclofenac(re.tard) is quite good cos it makes one to fall asleep after use. There also other diclofenac and all are generally good but the one with re.tard(very scarce to find) is the best.

Hygiene is of utmost importance because infection is dangerous for SS warrior. Extreme temperature of cold and heat. Steer clear of soda, juice and candies but more of fruits and vegetables. Folic acid once a day and Hydrourea once a day. Hydrourea is effective in keeping the cells from sickling as much as it would've. And finally, if you can afford it there is Bone Marrow Transplant when the procedure is sucessful it cures her of the sickle cell disease permanently but does not prevent her kids from getting it.
