I agree with you to an extent....especially in Border patrol...we have porous borders and the Tucano can help in giving a layer of security...

Adminisher:
The truth is that some systems aboard the latest Super Tucano are more sophisticated than JF17 and especially SU 30 MKI especially in the ground attack role.

If you look at systems alone, we are getting an aircraft we can use for almost anything ...And I am even adding disaster relief mapping, border patrol, emergency response, drought effect mapping, Fulani herdsmen trail mapping, crude oil spill mapping.

Everything we are getting and the platform will still be around in 25 years ...And it only costs $1000 to fly and can be on the air every day.

A lot of these other aircraft you mentioned are potent but will go to hospital for 5 days after flying for 10 hours.

Wow,Can you mention those systems shocked sad

The A-29 is a great LICW aircraft, it would serve the Air Force a great deal. In areas such as constant survelliance it is better than any fast jet.

10 hours in the air, with a recon pod is massive. Imagine those planes in the border area or out at sea in our EEZ. It won't replace a fast jet, it's not supposed to either, but it would serve us pretty well.

Let's wait till the actual contract is awarded, we would have specifics then.

I hope you all know the super tucano deal is still subject to ratification by the US Congress despite Donald Trump's assent for the sale. The mind boggling price may also include price of support, missiles, etc.
However, if that's not the case, if enough furore is made and escalated here in Nigeria to the hierarchy, maybe they might reconsider the deal if found to be too dear.

A turboprop aircraft would never replace a light/medium weight multirole jet or air superiority fighter, it can only complement and take on some of the work load for some specific type of missions like ISR and air interdiction, super Tucano cannot police our air space.

I don't see the point of this stingy behavior, since we know these things can't replace eachother I say we get a balanced mixture of both.

Light attack + medium mitirole + proper air defences
Light attack + heavy air superiortity

That's an interesting photo of a FAPLA Hind.

According to one Soviet advisor's account during the Angolan war FAPLA preferred using Mi-17 Hips with unguided rockets in lieu of the Hind, despite the fact they weren't nearly as effective. The reason was because the Hinds were considered so valuable they were all stored on major air bases in central locations like Luanda. If they were needed for an op, they would fly in, do their thing, then fly back to their base.

This meant that district commanders never had regular and direct access to the Hinds, so of course they weren't utilised to the full extent of their capabilities. If they had, I have a feeling ops like Askari and Moduler would have been a hell of a lot more difficult. A squadron of Hinds in competent hands would've been easily capable of taking out a column of Ratels, especially given the shortage of man portable SAMs at the time, and disappear before anything like an Impala or a Mirage could be called in to counter them.

On the other hand, the Hinds were expensive and considered much more difficult to replace than a Hip, so given the inexperience of many FAPLA district commanders it's possible the senior Air Force commanders were unwilling to risk placing them in their hands. I do not agree with this logic but can understand the rationale.

It's also possible that by confining the Hinds to a few very well-protected bases the risk of sabotage and damage due to UNITA raids was mitigated.

Interestingly is that when an attack was imminent units on the ground would get "victory" messages.

Exactly which 2 hulls are those,Fidha254?
KNS Nyayo(P3126) and KNS Umoja. In 2011 they underwent a complete upgrade in Italy,I don't know exatcly what was added but the main guns look new in pic one, and look like some aditional radras were added..

Here is a story of the two vessels meeting with British navy while they were on their way to Kenya from Italy

Monmouth conducts PASSEX with Kenyan Naval Vessels

Whilst on counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, HMS Monmouth, ‘The Black Duke’, rendezvoused with two newly refitted Kenyan patrol vessels. KNS NYAYO and KNS UMOJA are returning to their homeport after undergoing refit in Italy.
In challenging weather conditions, the Kenyan warships conducted a set of Officer of the Watch manoeuvres with the Black Duke. The patrol vessels, which can reach 40 knots, demonstrated great agility when manoeuvering in close-quarters with Monmouth.

The Black Duke broke off from the formation to launch her Lynx Mk8 helicopter and then returned to the Kenyan warships scything between the two in perfect formation for the Lynx to take photographs.

An information sharing exercise also provided an ideal opportunity to enhance maritime situational awareness. This is a key factor in the Maritime Security Operation (MSO) Kenya will be conducting in co-operation with Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

After a few hours together, the Kenyans continued on to their homeport of Mombassa whilst Monmouth continued with her operational tasking, working with other nations to counter terrorism, prevent smuggling and disrupt and deter piracy.

The Commanding Officer of HMS Monmouth, Commander Dean Bassett Royal Navy said: “This was an excellent opportunity to exercise at sea with the Kenyan Navy and a great example of the increasing cooperation and enduring relationship we have with an important partner in the region.

“I was most impressed with the professionalism and skills of the Kenyan sailors and look forward to working with them on future operations,” he added.

The exercise showed good interaction between Kenya and CMF and their determination to fight piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean.

HMS Monmouth is currently working as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, one of three task forces operated by Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a 25-nation coalition based in Bahrain.

Yes and FAPLA absolutely feared the Stingers. But they were unevenly distributed and UNITA was bloody awful shots. Fred Bridgland wrote that Recces had to be on hand to help them acquire their targets and operate the missiles, otherwise they missed more often than not.

The artillery guys always had first priority for air defence since the MiGs made them their #1 target. I think starting in Op Protea each battery had an attached troop from 10 AA Regiment with Ystervarks.

Other than that the only other piece of air defence equipment used in Angola was the Cactus, but it was not well suited to bundu bashing and simply could not keep up with vehicles like the Ratel or even the Buffel. Its use was very limited accordingly.

No, not at all. I only asked because, the content you are interested in mostly comes from the 70s and 80s era.

Which is not a bad thing. If you ask me, we really need all the diversity we can get.

Just plain curiosity.

I love that movie, the Irish soldiers stood their ground against some insane odds, the UN was a total mess during that period.

That would all depend on how they were deployed by commanders.

You also have to consider that in later ops like Moduler we had supporting unita units with stingers as well as more competent AAA. Not sure how Cactus would have done against it. It's a much easier target for a command guided round like Cactus. Who even knows if the few that were fired weren't simply damaged. Some of those french vehicles looked like they were literally dragged kicking and screaming through the bush by samils.

Another thing to consider is that they would have had to at some point land in G-5 range to be re-supplied and the recces had the fapla rear echelon well covered. Impala drivers would also salivate at the sight of any MI series in the skies as it was probably the only thing (slightly) slower than them.

MI24's might have had the edge in spotting units on the ground, because they're so slow. The migs either came in too fast and low or too high to see anything. Sometimes they would just bomb ashonas hoping to hit a water bowser.

You're referring to "vicktor vicktor" being called over the radio.
That meant "fighter fighter" or vegter vegter in Afrikaans thus VV or vicktor-vicktor in radio alphabet.

This call would signal all units to start their air defence contact drills. Mainly "fisgraat" (fishbone)
with the vehicles. Every driver would immediately turn left or right based on his vehicle nr. and gun the engine to get out of the migs strafing run. They could pick up on your tracks or dust through the bush and follow it right up your arse if you stayed in convoy.
