There are late starters in football. Not everyone who shines as a teenager makes it. Freddy Adu, Cherno Samba, Dominic Adiyiah, Nii Lamptey, etc show us things do not always go according to path. That's why I often hesitate to say that so and so player will be the highest goal scorer in Super Eagles or this person will become Nigeria's captain. Life happens. I can wager that some of those you listed WILL flatter to deceive at the end of the day.

And there are those who shone in their late twenties. Marco Materazzi, Ole Gunnar Solsjaer, Rickie Lambert, Ian Wright and even Luca Toni are good examples to show that there are indeed late bloomers.

I am afraid for Awoniyi, but your assumptions of him based on your examples are pedestrian.

I used a comparison of some top young players to describe the direction of progressive football in modern times.

None of these guys started with great expectations the comparison you are using cannot be related that much to Awoniyi. To put Ni Lamprey in your examples is a description of compound failure in football. Awoniyi has not become that bad yet.

I remember Materazzi at Everton, Lambart, Luca and Wright started with Zero expectation. They were essentially nobody's that through hard work and dogged determination made a name in football for themselves. They had no world cup youth pedigree or expectations.

Awoniyi started with Great expectations from the U17 World cup. A national youth players considered one of the best in the world from that age grade tournament.

Because of that pedigree and potential he was courted by the top clubs in Europe. He has played 30 competitive games in Bundesliga 2 and the Eredivisie and scored once, 1 goal. You really cannot day anything the stats speak for themselves.

I am not being unfair or harsh, I feel sorry for the young lad. It's not easy when you there are great expectations on you. It can either make or break you.

SINKING FEELING: 7 Nigerian Players Whose European Clubs Face Relegation

As some of the top leagues in Europe gradually draw to a close this season, Comple tesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI examines the survival chances of some Nigerian players whose clubs could be relegated…

LEON BALOGUN (Mainz 05: German Bundesliga)
Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun could be plying his trade in the German Bundesliga 2 next season if Mainz do not pick up the needed points in their five remaining games in the top flight.

Mainz are currently 15th in the 18-team league on 32 points and are just above the drop zone on better goals difference from Augsburg who are 16th.

Amongst Mainz's five remaining games of the season is an away trip to the Allianz Arena this Saturday against league leaders Bayern Munich.

Their other four games will see them face Borussia Monchegladbach (home), Hamburg (away), Frankfurt (home) and Cologne (away).

UCHE AGBO (Granada: Spanish LaLiga)
Uche Agbo's Granada are currently swimming in relegation waters as they are 19th in the Spanish LaLiga table.

Granada have 20 points and are seven points adrift of safety with six games remaining.

For Granada to escape relegation, they must secure vital points in their remaining six games against Sevilla who are aiming to pick a Champions League ticket, Malaga, Real Sociedad, Espanyol, Osasuna and Real Madrid who are in a title race with Barcelona.

VICTOR ANICHEBE (Sunderland: English Premier League)
Sunderland face the prospect of going down into the English Championship as they are rock bottom in the English Premier League table.

Victor Anichebe and his Sunderland teammates have 21 points and are nine points away from safety.

With six games left, Sunderland must negotiate against fellow relegation threatened teams, Swansea, Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Hull, league leaders Chelsea and top-four hopefuls Arsenal.

GODFREY OBOABONA, NOSA IGIEBOR, BRIGHT EDOMWONYI (Rizespor: Turkish Super Lig)
Nigerian trio Godfrey Oboabona, Nosa Igiebor and Bright Edomwonyi could all go down to the Turkish second division with their club Rizespor.

Rizespor are in the relegation zone in the 16th position on 23 points in the 18-team championship.

But it is not all doom and gloom for Rizespor as they are just four points adrift.

They have seven games left to turn around their season and remain in the top flight. And the seven teams they must try and get positive results from are Istanbul Basaksehir, Fenerbahce, Bursaspor, Kasimpasa, Gaziantepspor, Osmanlispor and Alanyaspor.

TAIWO AWONIYI (NEC Nijmegen: Dutch Eredivisie)
Taiwo Awoniyi, who is on loan from Liverpool, could see NEC Nijmegen could drop down to the second tier of Dutch football if results do not improve with three games remaining.

Though currently in the relegation play-off zone on 17th spot in the 18-team league, Nijmegen have lost their last five league games and are five points above bottom team Go Ahead Eagles.

They have two home games against Excelsior and AZ Alkmaar before an away trip in their last game against Heerenven.

Michael Babatunde Helps SC Qatar Gain Promotion

By Johnny Edward:

Nigerian forward Michael Babatunde's club SC Qatar have gained promotion to the elite division in Qatar after they defeated Al Shahaniya 1-0 in a promotion play-off game at the Al Seliah Stadium on Wednesday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ibrahim Gamal scored the only goal of the encounter in the 61st minute.

After a goalless first half, Gamal skipped past two defenders from the right flank before beating the goalkeeper with a delicate chip from the edge of the box.

Super Eagles Brazil 2014 World Cup star, Babatunde who played all 90 minutes in Wednesday's encounter, was ecstatic over the win and he says that there is a lot to come from his side when they begin life at the Stars League next season.

"A few months ago nobody gave us a chance to gain promotion when I joined the club, but I believed I could play a part after I saw how the team played with determination," Babatunde told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I am pleased with my feat here and I'm sure that we will get better next season."

Babatunde scored 25 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions for SC Qatar who will joinAl Markhiya who had sealed promotion after emerging champions of the second division league.

Ogu: Hapoel Be’er Sheva Won’t Blow Israeli League Title Chance

By Johnny Edward:

Hapoel Be'er Sheva midfielder John Ogu believes that the Camels can win the Israeli top flight title again this season and wants his side to maintain their winning streak till the end of the season, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva, who won won the title last season, are on an eight-game winning streak and with six games left to play in the campaign, Ogu is confident the Bachar Barak side will maintain their six-point gap over second-placed Maccabi Tel Aviv.

They currently lead the log with 71 points from 30 matches.
“We’re in a very good spot now. We think we can win the League title and we want to maintain our advantage over Maccabi," Super Eagles midfielder Ogu told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

“We have great ability, some of the things we could do on the pitch are awesome and I hope we will win the title again."

Ogu has made 26 appearances for Hapoel Be'er Sheva this season but he is yet to score.

Chidera Ezeh's goal today helped Portimonense gain promotion.

I think, he should stay for another season before returning to Porto.

The DM role in the Super Eagles is very tough but Ezeh is still young.

FC Porto Loanee Chidera Ezeh On Target For Portimonense To Hand Them League Title

Highly talented FC Porto Nigerian teen forward Chidera Ezeh scored as his loan side Portimonense clinched the second division title, and promotion in style.

Ezeh scored the opener on the stroke of half time to hand his side the lead in the top of the table clash against second placed CD Aves.

Both teams have secured promotion to the top flight in Portugal, and the game was mainly to decide which team will emerge as champions of the second division.

Aves levelled scores to 1-1, before Ewerton handed them all three points ten minutes from the end of the game. A win that also crowned them champions with an unassailable lead after picking up 73 points, with three games to spare.

The goal was Ezeh’s first goal of the season after nine games for Portimonense, the team he joined in the summer on a season long loan from Portuguese giants FC Porto.

It has emerged that Nigeria’s Victor Moses was one of three Chelsea players hit by a virus ahead of their loss to Manchester United.

Sky Sports has revealed that Moses, Marcos Alonso and striker Diego Costa all came down with a bug after a team meal on Thursday and missed training on Friday.

While Alonso withdrew during the warm-up before the match, Moses and Costa were able to play in the 2-0 loss suffered at Old Trafford.

The Nigerian fullback last just 54 minutes before he was replaced by Cesc Fabregas, while Costa saw out the 90 minutes but failed to threaten United’s defence.

Chelsea expect the trio to be fully recovered and fit to play in their FA Cup semifinal against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at Wembley.

The coach started him for a while and then dropped him to the bench due to his lack of goals. His return to the first team is good but he is not delivering.

This is his second season on loan. He did not deliver on his first either. His team got relegated.

The german 2nd division and the dutch league are decent levels for him to show results. He should not be poorer than these kinds of leagues if he wants to make liverpool's team eventually.

I think, part of his problem is psychological. He needs a run of goals.

The clock is ticking..

Taiwo has never been a striker who scores goals out of nothing. He works for his team and helps in building plays. His pass percentage about 70% which is pretty high for a striker. U might not see it with the goals but he is doing well for his team. I always tell u guys relegation football is much different.

West Bromwich Albion Join Race For This Highly Rated Nigerian: A Gamble Or A Safe Move By Pulis?

Posted BY Abhishek Majumdar

April 19, 2017 FEATURED COLUMN

West Bromwich Albion have been one of the toughest teams to tame at the Hawthorns this season, but the away form has been far from good for the Baggies. Currently, they are in need of an attacking player who can provide them with the option to score more goals and stabilise their form. Henry Onyekuru, the 19-year-old Nigerian forward can be the answer to their woes.

Reportedly, the Nigerian starlet who is currently playing for the Belgian side KAS Eupen is one of the most sought after forwards in the world and is being pursued by teams like West Bromwich Albion and Scottish Champions Celtic.

Celtic has been on the trail of Onyekuru for quite a long time and even had a £1million bid rejected by his current club KAS Eupen in January. It goes without saying that the Scottish Champions will once again bid for the 19-year-old Nigerian, but this time rivalled by the English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

The Nigerian starlet has already scored 15 goals so far this season and has been instrumental in his side’s victories. Onyekuru came through the Aspire Academy in Qatar before joining the Belgian side in 2015.

Reportedly, Henry Onyekuru has been on the radar of Premier League teams like Liverpool, Bournemouth and Southampton apart from West Bromwich Albion.

He is yet to make a decision about his future, which can only happen after the Belgian play-offs.

The Belgian side Eupen has valued the Nigerian youngster at £7million. However, they are still to decide whether to let go of Onyekuru at the end of the season, as he is a player who has been instrumental in all the wins of KAS Eupen since arriving at the club in 2015.

Henry Onyekuru has an ability to take shots on target both from close range as well as long distances. His goal scoring ability being uncanny, the forward is equipped with the ability to make great runs through the middle and can cause trouble for opponents by threading in pinpoint passes for his teammates to score goals.

The youngster has been in the running to be awarded the prestigious Belgian player of the Year. West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis has been quite desperate to sign the player for his team for the next season.

The forthcoming years definitely look bright for Henry Onyekuru. And coming to the Premier League at such a stage and getting the opportunity to rub shoulders with established players in the best league in the world will indeed be an enticing prospect for Henry.

Chelsea Loanee Abraham Eyes Championship Top Scorer Award

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham has set his sights on winning the top scorer award in the Championship at the end of the season.

With three games left before the end of the regular season, the England U21 international has scored 22 goals for Bristol City, three less than the leading marksman Leeds United's Chris Wood.

“Everyone has helped me settle here, the fans have too – they’ve been brilliant,” said Abraham to Bristol City's official website.

“It’s hard to describe; I’m just happy to be here and to keep scoring.

“I just want to help keep the team in the division now and then my aim is to finish top scorer in the division.”

If the goals Abraham scored in the League Cup and for England U21s are included in the mix, he has netted 27 goals in total for club and country so far this season.

Hannover Send Message To Arsenal To Back Off With Hefty Release Clause In Bazee's New Contract

The headline news before Hannover 96 faced off with Eintracht Braunschweig in the derby on Saturday was the extension of Noah Bazee's contract.

Hannover President Martin Kind has stated that any club interested in prising away the striker will have to pay a hefty release clause, according to Sportbuzzer .

Though a departure from the club in the summer has been ruled out, the HDI-Arena outfit have stressed that there are exit clauses, but only under certain conditions, and they are very expensive.

Bazee has enjoyed a fantastic season with Hannover, though he has struggled with hip and knee injuries, contributing to 7 goals from 13 appearances in the 2 Bundesliga.

It has been claimed that Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach were in pursuit of the Super Eagles hopeful before he committed his future to Hannover until the summer of 2021.

New Algeria Coach To Spy on Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal Nigerian Stars Ahead Of WCQ

New Algeria national team coach Lucas Alcaraz will closely monitor the Super Eagles players at close quarters before the North Africans face Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in November 2017.

The former Granada manager arrived in Algeria on Monday night and held his first press conference at the FAF CTN in Sidi Moussa on Wednesday.

''We will focus our work on three components. First watch the matches of the Algerian team.

Then watch those of our opponents and chat with the players,'' said Alcaraz to reporters.

''We will also follow the matches of the championship of the Liga 1 Mobilis. We will do everything possible to integrate Algerian football in all its fields.

''As for the World Cup the situation is complicated but we will fight in every match.''

To better communicate with his players, who speak mostly French and Arabic, the Spanish coach said he will have a teacher in Algeria and another in Spain to learn French.

Lucas Alcaraz will run the rule over the players in the domestic championship every month before the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

Supersport switches off Nigerian League after Kenya’s

By Bonface Osano

South Africa based pay television Supersport has cancelled their broadcast contract with the Nigerian Professional Football League.

The decision means the country’s topflight will not be aired live by the pay television giants.

The move comes weeks after they took a similar decision in Kenya – terminating a ten-year relation with the Kenyan Premier League.

Last year they ended their union with the Ghanaian Premier League, which another pay television company Star Times have since taken over.

Supersport is said to be downsizing its operations in Africa for business reasons.
With dwindling subscription numbers and stiff competition from new entrants like Star Times, Kwese Sports among others, Supersport’s stay outside its South Africa base has been a subject of speculations.

Since the beginning of the new Premier Soccer League season in Zimbabwe, Supersport has not been able to air live a single match despite holding the rights.

They are however active in the Zambian Super League and the South Africa’s

Yes he does but he cut down on it during his time at Manchester City. A good example was in his first pre-season game against Kansas. There was a delightful trick move he pulled off then.

That is a simple conclusion to make, like they say numbers don't lie. But do remember that he would be going to the U20 world cup if we had qualified. At this point in their careers Iheanacho and Success had not done much either. Kelechi was still with Man city youth team and the only goal Isaac had scored was a deflection that he knew nothing about, he also was not a match day squad regular.

Awoniyi is just one year younger than kelechi and about one and a half years younger than Success.

Last year, Isaac Success was voted player of the season at Granada, Last year, Kelechi had a great season at a top premier league club.

Awoniyi is playing at a much lower level and is not producing similar results.

At the end of the day, football is about results.

I hope he finds his feet but right now, he is not yet there.

Why not?

Every footballer has dribbling skills.

What you do is to compare his with that of another footballer and ask who has more dribbling skills.

Chidera Ezeh's goal today helped Portimonense gain promotion.

I think, he should stay for another season before returning to Porto.

The DM role in the Super Eagles is very tough but Ezeh is still young.

Did he play as a DM in the game?

He used to have a fairly good dribbling ability during his U17 days, and he showed glimpses of that during the Pellegrini era, though regressed. From what I have seen this season, the little dribbling ability he has has been drilled out of him. He now lacks that confidence of taking out outfield players. Another indictment of the Pep era on the young man.

Taiwo has never been a striker who scores goals out of nothing. He works for his team and helps in building plays. His pass percentage about 70% which is pretty high for a striker. U might not see it with the goals but he is doing well for his team. I always tell u guys relegation football is much different.

Did you see him play recently?
