His scissors kick against the Spanish team in France 98, when he came in as a sub is still giving me an hypovolemic shock and his goal against Kenya in Afcon 92.

Yes I remember that scissors kick against Spain. That would have made the game 4-2 but he missed it.

Does anyone remember Okiki Afolabi from Sunshine Stars who scored a lot of goals for the team. He scored about 13 goals in 17 games.

He left Sunshine Stars to Argentina midway through the season. That deal did not work out so well. Now, he is in Malaysia.

Whoever is managing Odey should make sure decisions are made for the player's best interest and progress. If he progresses, the agents will make more from him in the future.

That Okiki Afolabi's story is one of so many. Uncountable in fact. Many of these NPFL players will have one good season, some half of a season, and they are off. Majority of them you'll never get to hear their names again.

The commentator said that Yekini went for the spectacular and achieved the ordinary. That was a memorable move.

You recall people then typically accused Yekini of scoring cheap goals?

I think that was the root of that attempt.

A simple control and then tap it in would have done it. But he went for the spectacular.

Well said. With the way things are going, I don't expect Pep to last at ManCity. I think he would get exposed as an average coach that he really is. He doesn't have Messi, Xavi and Iniesta to carry his water anymore. I have never rated Pep despite everything he won at Barca.

And I said the same thing about Luis Enrique last year, after he had won a triple, but people thought that I was talking nonsense.

O pari

When you make statements like this, I weak. If there is one thing Pep has shown, he is not an average coach. I keep hammering that football is not static but dynamic. What Pep is doing is not a one night thing. The English game is so rigid that some games, Arsenal pack the bus. That is how bad things are in England. It is all about win than improving performance.

With time, Pep's work will bear fruits. Overnight success was not the plan.

In the game against Manchester United, Manchester United had the lowest possession since 2004. The fans of United Celebrated a draw. You can not achieve that by being an average coach.

It is a total change of system. It is a long project.

Favorite moments of Yekini was his lob over a keeper (can not remember the team we played against in Tunisia 94), then the ball bounced up and he nodded it into the net.

Also his long range freekick (also can not remember the team) but the power in that shot was unbelievable.

Joe, do you know the problem I have with that line of argument? Pep's team isn't improving. In fact, his team is getting worse. If he's on a long term project as you said, at least, we gotta see some evidence of improvement after more than 8 months. But instead of improving, his team is actually retrogressing. So how do you explain that? He started off with a 10 unbeaten run. Since then he hasn't even had a 4 unbeaten run.

Gosh, even Jose Mourinho's team (who's also overrated, IMHO) has shown some significant improvements over the past 8 months. But we can't say the same about Pep. So how do you explain that

The same Jose Mourinho's team that not long ago could not come out of their eighteen to play Manchester City to you have improved more than City.

Na wa, fear God. Now packing bus like a championship team is improving.

Manchester United record lowest possession since 2003 with draw at Manchester City

Manchester United well and truly parked the bus in tonight’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City as they recorded just 31% possession at the Etihad Stadium.

This one plenty, but the most audacious was against Congo away in 1993. after the match the bus carrying the players was attacked

Rashidi Yekini:

5 yrs ago today you moved to the great beyond.

The gap you created in the national team is still there.

I thank God and I'll say I was privileged to be among those you brought joy upon their faces.

I wept for joy when you scored Nigeria's first goal in that '94 World Cup. No other player deserved to have that record but you.

The goals record you created is still yet to be broken even 2 decades after.

You were a man that put Nigeria first when national team duty called.

Your 100% commitment was also always noticed on the field of play.

pp

We miss you Rashidi (Yeking) Yekini.

Guys, Let's share our favorite moments of Rashidi Yekini.

I was in the womb when he scored that goal, but then I grew up seeing a man on tv in a checkered green n white jersey grabbing the net nd shouting but surprisingly there was no one with him in the net, so I used to think he threw a big chance away.

not until when my dad explained how he scored Nigeria's first goal at WC that that was y he celebrated that way, I asked further what was he now saying in the post my dad said no one knows till now.

I asked again (I used to be and am still inquisitive) y was dere no one celebrating with him since it was our first WC goal n he told me that there was mafia n malice in the team especially against Yekini because he used to score lots of goals and he received most of the accolades n attention so others were jealous and didn't celebrate with him and that only Victor ikpeba went to meet him before he left the net.

he also said the failure of that team was caused by a certain mafia group in the team who saw themselves as big boys and the malice against Yekini which saw him usually isolated as he would be starved of passes. pls sir Icon4s is the above true or was it just rumours??

I also saw his pix when he played gateway united in the Npl in 2006 which happened to be his last clubside. I heard a lot about him but didn't see him play.

Dad said all those small countries that are now fond of making mouth when they want to play Nigeria dx days would already v conceded defeat once they wrre drawn against the SE during yekini's time and in the 80s as well cuz they know for sure they won't n can't beat us and that our team was very strong n good.

Your last paragraph got me laughing. But to that, not today. And I cannot tell that story alone. Elders like enomakos, kog45, komekn, forgiveness, Goldfish80, Tbaba1234, TheGoodJoe and others need to contribute their own sides bc many things been happen then o.

As to why Yekini celebrated alone:
Typically when a team goal is scored the scorer of the goal runs towards the other team mates that contributed to the scoring of that goal. That was a team goal that Yekini scored. The move started from Finidi who gave a pass to Amokachi who now put his leg at danger to slide the ball pass the Bulgarian goalie to Yekini who now just tapped the ball in almost effortlessly into an empty net. While the team members, who also expected Yekini to follow suit, ran towards Amokachi and Finidi, Yekini ran into the back of the net .To celebrate with who? I think it was Uche Okechukwu(not Ikpeba) who later went to bring him out of the net from where his leg was even entangled.

As for question of mafia. It existed.

People call them the mafia but they were just a gang of senior members of the team. Steven Keshi was their leader.

And yes we learnt Yekini had issues with most of the rest of the team. "Learnt" because they were rumours. Some said he took credit for all the teams achievements and that caused bad blood in the team. Very possible. But I don't think that was the reason we crashed to Italy in that epic 2nd Round game.

Issue of players not passing the ball to him also a rumour or insinuation. If it was true Amokachi would not have given him that pass from which he scored Nigeria's first WC goal. Just like the recent saying some time here that City players have refused passing the ball to Iheanacho.

Omo, you live and die by your results...it doesn't matter how you procure them. If packing the bus gets you the result then so be it.
A few years ago, Mourinho's Inter Milan packed a tank against Barca at Nou Camp but still come out winning the match and eventually winning the UCL championship. So are we gonna put asterisks* to that championship win because they packed the bus? No, I don't think so.

Take it from me, Man Utd would do better than ManCity in next year's EPL. And that's all that matters.

Wilfred Ndidi’s goal voted best goal of the season

James Nursery, a Mirror Sports writer, has picked Wilfred Ndidi’s first goal in a Leicester City shirt, as the best goal he has watched live this season.

The Super Eagles midfielder, who signed for the Premier League champions in January, is fast earning a reputation for brilliant long-range efforts.

When asked to name the best goal he has seen live, Nursery went for Ndidi’s cracker against Derby Country in the FA Cup fourth round replay.

He wrote: “I enjoyed Wilfred Ndidi’s left-foot screamer in Leicester’s televised FA Cup fourth round 3-1 replay win over local rivals Derby at the King Power Stadium earlier this year.

“It was a quality goal from outside of the box, which went in off the post, from a youngster who announced his arrival in England on just his sixth appearance after a £14million January move from Genk.

“Ndidi , 20, has since been a revelation at the Premier League champions to help them climb to safety.

“The Nigerian international looks a hugely promising player and already has bigger clubs interested in his services.

“The midfielder’s signing has enabled Leicester to return to last term’s successful 4-4-2 formation to do the club proud in the Champions League and turnaround their miserable top-flight form.

“Ndidi also proved his screamer wasn’t a fluke with another belter, this time off his right-foot, into the top corner last month against Stoke.”

Watford winger Isaac Success admits Chelsea's Didier Drogba was star he most enjoyed watching
By Hertfordshire Mercury

IDOL: Isaac Success used to enjoy watching Chelsea's Didier Drogba for the goals he scored

Didier Drogba's impressive scoring record at Chelsea meant Watford winger Isaac Success was always keen to watch him play.

Growing up in Nigeria, Success played plenty of street football, but could not always afford to watch Premier League games at the weekend.

When he did get the chance, Drogba scored, and when he was unable to catch the games, people told him that Drogba scored.

Success told The Hornet, Watford's official programme, that made him want to watch the Ivory Coast international all the time.

"Since I was in Nigeria as a baby I've been watching the Premier League and the likes of Didier Drogba, so I knew that it [The Premier League] was like this," Success said.

"I enjoyed the fact that he [Drogba] always scored goals. I couldn't always afford to go to the local sports centre to pay money to watch the weekend games on TV, but even the people always told that Drogba had scored.

"He just got famous in my head and that made me want to watch him play even more."

That upbringing made Success determined to play in the Premier League one day and he got the chance last summer.

He knows he's still adapting to the demands of top-flight football, even though people tell his strength and pace mean he's suited to it.

"Of course I moved to Spain first, but when I had the opportunity to come here to England I was so happy to come and play in this league.

"It's more physical than Spanish football so I'm trying to make sure I've adapted properly to it.

"People say I'm strong and quick and that's everything about the Premier League. I just need to work extra hard to keep to the standard of the Premier League and that's what I've been doing since I came back from injury.

"I'm very happy the way that the staff and technical crew at Watford have been pushing me so far to make sure they get the best out of me, and so that I can help the team too."

Referees need adequate security to perform optimally- Ilechukwu

By Jeremiah Umahi

MFM Head Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has said that there must be maximum security at match venues before we can expect a hundred percent performance from them.

The ‘Working One’, as he popularly called, maintained that for effective performance, security from other states should be at match venues and security from the home state.

The Prayer Warriors Coach told Aoifootball.com exclusively that he doesn’t blame referees who make wrong calls sometimes because their lives are often in danger from home teams’ fans.

“I am not the type of coach that complains about referees because I know they too are human beings who can commit errors. The only thing that is sure about officiating is that without having enough securities in a game, there is no how the referee can do his work properly.”

“Having heard of what happened to referees in other places, I cannot be hundred percent if I am a referee because my life is important. If we want hundred percent officiating, there must be adequate security at football venues nationwide. If my team MFM, for example, is playing in Lagos and there is no adequate security, it is risky on the side of the referee.

“I will suggest that security be provided from other states; we have the best referees but they use to change in games because of the reaction of the home side.

“I don’t blame them; the very day things will change is the day the LMC themselves get enough security to guide the referees at match venues and make sure no harm comes to them,” concluded Ilechukwu.

Leicester already considering sale of summer purchase, Ligue 1 side keeping tabs on performances
By Tom Coast

When Ahmed Musa arrived in the Premier League at the beginning of the season, nobody really knew what to expect.

Either the Nigerian forward would end up setting England alight with his boundless energy and backbreaking speed, or he wouldn’t adapt and fall by the wayside.

As things stand, the Leicester City forward is doing the latter.

Four goals in 31 appearances in all competitions isn’t exactly anything to shout about, and the 24-year-old’s future at the King Power Stadium has already been questioned.

In fact, local Nigerian outlet OwnGoalNigeria report there is a good chance the former CSKA Moscow star could leave in the coming months.

The website claim that Marseille in France are very interested in the forward, and will evaluate how he does against Corsica in a friendly before making their mind up.

Considering Leicester paid close to £17m for Musa less than a year ago, it remains to be seen how much they would be willing to sell him for, as his season doesn’t exactly warrant them asking for much more than their original expenditure.

This is also our first encounter with OwnGoalNigeria, so we’ll throw this one in the ‘doubtful’ drawer for now, but we’ll definitely keeping an eye out for more updates on this situation.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham unsure where he will be playing next season ahead of contract talks

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is unsure where he will be playing his football next season ahead of his return to Stamford Bridge.

Abraham has spent the current campaign on loan at Championship club Bristol City and proven himself to be a stellar addition to Lee Johnson's squad.

The 19-year-old has scored 26 goals in 47 appearances for the Robins and is believed to be in high demand as the summer transfer window approaches, with just two years left on his current Chelsea deal.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea are considering handing Abraham a new contract worth double the £25,000-a-week he currently earns .

The striker will return to west London this summer but is yet to discuss whether his immediate future lies as a part of Antonio Conte's first-team squad or another loan elsewhere.

"I've heard a few bits, this and that, but I'm not too sure what I'm doing yet and I haven't spoken to Chelsea about next season," Abraham is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"I'm focused here before I end up shooting off back to Chelsea. Bristol is always going to be in my heart now but I'm not too sure what I'm doing.

"It's a situation if Chelsea want me to come back or want me to go somewhere else to develop in a different way."

Abraham believes Bristol are interested in securing his services on a similar loan agreement and is open to a second stint at Ashton Gate, having been such a success in the West Country.

"It would be nice to come back to Bristol in the future," added the England Under-21 international.

Chelsea plan to buy at least one striker this summer, with Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata on their wish list, but it is understood they have no interest in selling Abraham.

The most likely option for the Abraham is another season-long loan deal but to a Premier League club rather than a second tier outfit.

Bristol City could look to loan another young Chelsea striker

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson could consider a loan move for another Premier League talent next season following the success of on loan Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham during the current campaign according to the Bristol Post.

The 19-year-old Camberwell born hotshot has scored an impressive 26 goals in just 47 appearances during a season-long loan spell at Ashton Gate.

Abraham is set to either be offered an opportunity with parent club Chelsea next season or be sent out on loan to a Premier League club and it has been reported that Robins boss Johnson will look to replace the player with an overseas striker or another loan striker.

One man who Johnson could consider moving for is Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo. The FA Youth Cup winner has been a revelation for The Blues’ development squad this season and the player has taken a similar path through the club’s academy system as Abraham.

The 18-year-old hotshot is tipped for a bright future in the game and is set to be loaned out by Chelsea next season. Bristol City’s good treatment of Abraham has left a positive impression upon Chelsea and the club could look favourably upon sending fellow frontman Ugbo to Ashton Gate.

Abraham’s departure will leave a massive hole in Bristol City’s attack and it is vital that the club take their time to sign the right man to replace the youngster.

Oliseh: There Is Only One Yekini Of Nigerian Football

 4 May 2017
 Headlines, Top Stories

By Johnny Edward:

Fortuna Sittard coach Sunday Oliseh says it will be difficult for Nigeria to discover another talent like the Late Super Eagles striker Rashidi Yekini who died on May 4, 2012, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

An emotional Oliseh paid tribute to the late Yekini on Thursday as Nigeria and the football world marked the fifth year remembrance of the former Super Eagles striker's death.

The former Nigeria captain and coach reckoned he actually got the famous nickname "The Pass Master" due to the clinical styles with which Yekini converted such assists into goals.

"The Late Yekini was everything a team needed in attack," Oliseh told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"He virtually made us look great with the way he scored goals and at that time people started recognising players who made assists.

"As a team, we all knew if he was through on goal the chances of him scoring was as high as 90%. He was that good,"

"The way he clinically finished off passes from me and the others was always awesome.

"Yekini will never be forgotten, never. And it will be very difficult to find another striker just like him. He was a blessing to our generation."

Yekini is still Nigeria's top scorer in history with 36 goals.
He featured in two senior FIFA World Cups and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 with the Super Eagles. He was voted African Player of the Year in 1993.

Stephen Odey trialling in Europe at exactly the wrong time

Colin Udoh

Ordinarily, news of a Nigerian player's impending transfer from the domestic league to Europe would be greeted with some gaiety, revelry even.

One need not look too deep to understand why: greater exposure, better training facilities, more opportunity to compete against the best, sometimes a stepping stone to better moves and, of course, significantly higher wages, among other benefits.

None of that conviviality was in evidence when news broke last week that league top scorer Stephen Odey was on his way to Europe. Apparently, the forward was on his way to take part in trials. Trials!

The reception to the mood degenerated from bad to worse as information emerged that MFM FC striker's trials were in Denmark, at FC Midjytylland, a club on which a Nigerian semiprofessional side, FC Ebeide, regularly places players -- without the need for trials. Many in Nigerian football considered it humiliating that the top scorer in the country's premier league would be subjected to the indignity of trials with a club for which amateur players from Nigeria simply walk in.

With coach Gernot Rohr soon to name his full Nigerian squad for a friendly game against Corsica, then the African Nations Cup qualifier against South Africa, many in the Nigerian media have championed Odey's inclusion with gusto. He was generally believed to be one of the names to be included, despite Rohr's seeming reluctance to trust home-based talent. So Odey's decision to go off for trials in the middle of the season was egg in the faces of the media pack who had fought so long for him.

But there was worse to come. Reports in local media quoted former MFM FC chairman Godwin Enakhena as saying that the economic rights of the player, who has been with the club for the last three years, were owned by a third party.

Not only would this be in contravention of FIFA regulations on third-party ownership of player rights, but it would also flout domestic football regulations.

There are consequences everywhere. For both player and club.

In the short term, it could mean Odey's name would be chalked off from the Nigeria squad list. But there are more far-reaching consequences, and not just for the player.

One reason why previous Nigerian coaches have baulked at the idea of calling up local players is their lack of stability. One day they're tearing it up in the domestic league; the next, they are sneaking off to Europe for trials and end up losing both form and match fitness.

In his early days as Nigeria coach, the late Stephen Keshi tried to build his local-based team of talents around experienced right back Chibuzor Okonkwo, even making him captain. Within weeks of camp opening, Okonkwo had gone off on trials to Europe, disrupting Keshi's programme. The coach found it hard to forget and froze out Okonkwo, who fizzled out of the national team conversation. The player's trials also fizzled, as he failed to get a European contract.

And therein lies the conundrum for coaches: trying to plan a national team around players with a tendency to disappear at the first whistle from a European club.

It is even more vexing for the clubs that own the players. Odey's club, MFM FC, have been playing musical chairs with Plateau United for top spot in the league table. The young club have shown themselves to be genuine challengers, and Odey's goals are key to that.

With the league on a midseason break after a punishing schedule of two games a week, this was an opportunity for the league's most valuable property to get some much-needed rest and recuperation in preparation for what is usually a brutal second round. Instead, Odey has been off playing trial matches, which will undoubtedly leave him fatigued. Without his goals, MFM's challenge could well peter out and his stock would lose value.

Odey would have been better served by finishing the season with a sustained assault on Mfon Udoh's record of 23 goals. Instead, he may find himself reduced to another footnote, another statistic in Nigerian football's almost unending list of shooting stars who sizzle one day and burn out the very next.

And that would be a shame.

Odey, Olatunbosun to get Eagles call

by George Akpayen 04 May 2017, 09:20

MFM FC attacking pair of Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun have been handed call-ups to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, supersport.com can report.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leading scorer Odey and Olatunbosun are two of the four players from the country's top division expected to be announced for the roster ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against South Africa in June this year.

FC Ifeanyiubah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Akwa United striker Alhassan Ibrahim are also in the mix.

The four players are expected to join up with the overseas-based players called by Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr for the camp in a French island, Corsica.

However, the trio of Alhassan, Ezenwa and Olatunbosun have applied for their visas ahead of the trip to Corsica while MFM striker Odey is in Denmark seeking to join FC Midtjylland.

"The three other players have been in Abuja to get their visas ready for the trip. Stephen Odey is the only one remaining now," Super Eagles spokesman Toyin Ibitoye confirmed to supersport.com on Wednesday.

The squad for the trip to Corsica ahead of the match-up with Bafana Bafana of South Africa is expected to be announced this week.

BascoVanVeli:

To make my self clear i feel what he did was childish and lacked character but I never believed in bad publicity. Just like at the olympics when we were hiding our faces in shame, delta airlines used that chance to snap a picture of our guys and put it up on their site. Nigerian football can be worth more than any other federation because we bring non stop drama. If they could make a show of our behind the scene wahala we will pass big brother by miles.
I heard a proof that despite invitation, players needed to drop "Kola" to be part of the true setup, else risk drop. No one could talk cos it would mean byebye to a national career that could be used as a stepping stone to Glory.
