I guess they do.

Actually, there is no list for the supported financial operators. I was only requested to provide my Location, Bank Name, Sort Code and other info you can get online. You need to ensure the account name corresponds with your Upwork details after which the account will be up in 24 hours...Dazall.

wman:

Do they accept GTB?

I had issues GTB to my account.

Everything you need to succeed online is already available.

Only three things can stop you from achieving premium success in the online world...Guess what/who they are! You! You! & You!. You're the only one who can start, sustain or stop yourself.

Beyond the interest to make money, it's important that you have valuable skills/resources that can be exchanged for me.

That done, take your time to read/study different platforms, threads and trends. Start from the front page of this thread.

Hi, freelancers in the house.
I have been on upwork for about 6 weeks going to 7 now and I haven't gotten any job yet. A client interviewd me yesterday and decided not to hire me. He said he had many offers. I know I have to keep trying and bidding but I don't know if anyone in the house can help me in getting my first job. I believe after the first job, getting others will be a little easier cos It will show on my profile that I have completed a job. I am a writer and my upwork profile is focused on the writing niche as well. I just wish someone can please refer a client to me. I know no one is under obligation to help me as you do not know me. But I will really appreciate it if someone out there can help me. I won't let you down.

Hi,

(My intention is to help and not to be an ITK)
The truth is that you will have to keep trying. Your profile is okay, but you can make it better. You have to make your profile interesting. You may be the best writer on earth but your profile does not currently say that. I do not mean literary writing "best writer on earth" on it. Your overview must be bold and classy. Please search top writers on upwork, copy their overview and edit to suit. Writers are 'some' of the richest on upwork.
Also get another profile picture, possibly against a wall or blank background. Your current background is a bit too noisy.
You need to take more Tests. An above average score on upwork for a test is not a good thing. Try having a score in percentage (top 30%, top 20%, etc). You can hide this test.
If you can, specify a topic you are great at as your headline. Instead of professional writer, you can be religious writer, legal writer, sport writer, African writer, etc. You might feel this might limit your prospective but it will keep you on the top end of the list. Better still when you see a job you like, before applying quickly change your headline to the topic of writing required.
Then you have to watch how you apply for jobs. Do not just rush in to apply, verify a few things first. How many people already applied for that job? if it is above 50 forget it. It will be awesome if you applied within 30 minutes of post. If you can, only apply for jobs with verified payment or previous hires. Most new client are spams looking for people to waste their connects. I cannot over emphasize the importance of a good cover letter, it is everywhere online. If you can spend a little time to answer any question in the job post you increase your chance.
For now I would say filter jobs that are entry level and omit expert and intermediate. They are cheap but require less scrutiny.

I am sorry I am not able to refer someone. I am a graphic designer and currently dont have a client that requires writing. Just like you I have a Nigerian profile and I have been okay.
The truth is not everyone gets job immediately they start on upwork. Some people dont get jobs in 18 months. You just have to keep trying, improve your skills and keep trying.
Trust me when it comes you will be complaining of too much work.

God bless

Thank you Kuyubi for replying, I wanted some experts to respond before I did. Practical and well meaning advice is better than silence, whether I am an expert or a beginner so here goes:

1. Apply to job posts with purpose. You want each connect to count, so look out for clients who have paid reasonably in the past (you decide what value is reasonable to you, keeping in mind your skill and the effort required for the job - aim high) and have positive reviews.
2. Apply to jobs you can do. You will know this if you can create a sample that is similar to what is requested. Extensive research is allowed and the sample can be a snippet of reasonable length.
3. Create that sample and use it in your cover letter. Your cover letter should not be about I can do this, I have this experience, etc. As a beginner, no one will believe you. Let the client see that you can carry out the project. All that is left is to determine if your style is what they are after. If you are not contacted, it's okay, you have a new addition to your portfolio.
4. Don't attach this sample as suggested by UPWORK. Fear of viruses has made everyone wary of this. Rather save that sample in your Upwork portfolio (or your blog, I saw it - well done!) and include the URL of THAT SPECIFIC sample. Verify the link yourself.
5. Those funny questions that are sometimes asked - Your ideal travel destination, etc, answer them with care. This demonstrates that you are a person with something to say and not a robot just after the money.

These are the steps I took to land my first client on my 3rd attempt. Yes, it is tiring to create these samples, but it is good practice for you. It is unlikely that a client will look through each applicant's portfolio. So make sure that all your attractive qualities are easy for them to find.

I am sorry that I also don't have any clients to refer you to. Have you seen this from someone I admire: https://www.nairaland.com/2947212/exclusive-how-make-level-2/488#56281195

That was written by a regular client on Upwork I read a while ago. If I put myself in the client's shoe, I wouldn't want to download documents from 10 (sometimes more) people I don't know.

I agree with you.
Sometimes you also need to do free work. Yes you do. I joined upwork in August 2016 and I have completed 42 jobs with 5 pending. That is an average of 5 jobs per month. How did I do it? I never stop trying.
Here is how I got 8 out of my first 10 jobs. I sent my proposal with a version of the work. You want a logo done? I draw out 2 concepts for the logo and send with my proposal. Is there a possibility the client will steal the idea? YES. but it does not matter. If I do not do it I might not get the job, If I do it I might get the job also. But what do I lose? Time? That time is worth no money if I keep the idea to myself anyway. So I send the client a tip of what they will get if they work with me. And it worked. 5 came back and paid straight up without adjustment done. 3 came back loving the direction I took and edited the concept some more.
It does not hurt if you do a little research on that subject and drop a paragraph or two about the client's project.

You also need to sound exciting and full of life. People get along with that sort of vibe. You might not get the job but you will leave an impact.

IMPORTANT: try to use less words like PLEASE, HELP, I NEED THIS. Be as professional as possibly. These words rub off wrong with people.
Use words like GREAT, AWESOME, DEFINITELY, THANK YOU.

Don't sound desperate.

IMPORTANT: Always be the last to talk in the chat. Don't let the client be the last to talk. It shows you left nothing outstanding.
When they look at their chat they will see you talked last and look at the messages again to be sure everything is closed. This is good when the client is in a dilemma.

1. Can you write?
2. Have you written research papers on psychology?
3. Got a sample research paper on psychology?
4. Can you do a 750 to 1,000 word sample on a topic I assign to you so I can gauge your ability to take on a serious research paper in this field? I will pay for this sample if I approve of it!

Then shoot me an email: my nairaland username at gmail dot come

42 completed jobs - I am excited to hear this! Wishing you more success.

You know, when you talked about doing free jobs, it set alarm bells ringing in my head. That's because many of the Upwork pros I follow insist we avoid that. The way you laid it out makes sense though. It will pay off for WELL PAYING clients with proven track records. For scam clients, they will definitely run away with your work. For anyone reading who is still afraid - try a sample AS CLOSE to what is asked for...and then say in your proposal, for your particular project I will do this and that like in my sample.

You are right though, to succeed on Upwork, you must do the work as a beginner. Thank you kuyubi for the bolded especially. Will also keep that in mind, when I need to source for more clients.

HI Bolabell,

I understand why the alarm bells. I also hear that "do no free work from the pros".
But these guys are "pros". We are "not" pros yet. They give tips relative to them. I know few guys who even pay for tips from "pros" and they are nowhere yet. Truth is not the same technique works for everyone. There is this Manny guy who markets himself as being the guru of upwork. Problem is his techniques bothers around being arrogant and forceful. People pay $400 for his course. The issue is that while this technique might work for a few client, a lot others will just skip you. I have read clients complaining how rude a freelancer was even while having mediocre skills. Not giving free work will work, definitely, i agree. But I found it helped me tho. There are just too much freelancers competing for little jobs.
I also noticed that clients view freelancers differently. I mean your face and nationality. Most pros will tell you that bid high on a project and the client will take you serious and might hire you. Well that works well for everyone except Indians, Pakistanis, and Africans (Nigerians). They believe that $100 is a big deal to us so they value us that range and below. Not every time, but in most cases (stories from fellow upworkers and myself).
Someone from Ukraine will ask for $300, You are asking for $200. They will rather take him or keep looking. If they really like you the will ask for a reduced rate, probably $100, before you get the job. I do not really blame them because Nigerians and Indians do not have a good reputation in the freelance community.
Do not get me wrong I do not apply to jobs posted by Indians (I use to last year but noticed their jobs never go through. They don't end up hiring anyone). Same vibe I get from their(indians) post is same vibe others get from my proposal when the see my raking and designs. They say if it is too good to be true then it is, and move on to the next freelancer. I understand tho.
You might be one of those very few Nigerians making over $60,000 on upwork tho. My point is different tides for everyone.

So knowing there are so many odds we have to make the rules as we go. The general rule does not always apply to us.
