One UN peacekeeper killed, eight wounded, in Central African Republic

DAKAR (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A United Nations peacekeeper in Central African Republic was killed and eight others wounded late on Monday when their convoy was attacked by unknown assailants in the southeast of the country, the U.N. mission (MINUSCA) said on Tuesday.

Four peacekeepers are missing following the attack on the convoy near the town of Bangassou, about 730 km (453 miles) east of the capital Bangui, the mission said in a statement.

The peacekeeper who was killed was from Cambodia, while the injured and missing are Cambodian and Moroccan, MINUSCA said.

A U.N. helicopter and peacekeepers have been sent to secure the area and search for the missing while the injured were evacuated by plane to Bangui, the mission said.

"They are possibly hiding somewhere," MINUSCA spokesman Herve Verhoosel told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone.

The attack came after five international aid agencies temporarily suspended their operations in northern Central African Republic last week because of attacks on humanitarian workers by armed groups.

Central African Republic is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for aid agencies, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said last week, with at least 33 attacks on aid workers in the first quarter of 2017.

Central African Republic has been plagued by inter-religious violence since 2013 when mainly Muslim Seleka fighters seized power, prompting reprisals from Christian militias, known as anti-balaka http://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFKBN1851IW-OZATP?utm_content=bufferf5903&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

For some reason you seem to think I'm trying to insult the Nigerian Navy. I'm not.
A am concerned about the guy and his boat crew. I'm a fellow African x-soldier and I don't want to see that guy get killed protecting his country , because he wasn't given the tools or the training to do his job properly.

That weapon is NOT going to function properly. If it looks like that from the outside the inside WILL be worse. I've inspected hundreds of machine guns and cannons and I can tell you a weapon should never get to that state even in the worst of circumstances. If you don't believe me ask any of the vets in this forum or anywhere else for that matter.

That's a CIS 50MG heavy machine gun it's not a AK. It has a complex dual feed system and any heavy MG needs to be tuned just right to work without having to re-cock it every 3 rounds. If his crew gets ambushed on a river and it doesn't function they are dead. River ambushes are no joke.

HMG's are designed to be field maintainable. Being out on a long patrol is no excuse. Rust does not appear overnight. All you need is a drum and some diesel to get the worst out of it. Then it's just a question of routine lubing.

Henry240:

There are over 5,000 creeks which require constant daily patrols. Not 50 or 500. The navy operates more than 600 riverine boats, it is not unusual that rust might affect a single gun out of over 600 units patrolling the AOR which includes 5,000 internal waterways. That's a single gun, which has unfortunately deteriorated due to salt.

I have seen front-line, active US navy ships with rusts on their equipment. Now, we are talking about the Nigerian navy which by a long shot is the most active in Africa. The damage on that single boat is not representative of the rest of the vessels in the navy's fleet.

...And you seem to think that i took your comment as an offence. This could not be farther from the truth. I know a genuine comnent when i see one.

My response to the other South-Africans is very proportionate.

I know very well what that HMG is, it's an ST Kinetics CIS 50 CAL. HMG. We have been operating them since 2002.

There are multiple reasons why that level of rust could have accumulated. It might have been how it was stored, it might also have been as a result of salt. Like I said initially, I have seen US navy active weapon systems gather rust. I wish i could get that photo.

Each Nigerian navy gunboat carries a CIS 50, a 40mm and 5 soldiers. For it to have been mounted it must have been tested and qualified to be in working condition.

The soldier has at his disposal a 7.62mm bullet resistant gunboat, armed with a 50 CAL and a 40mm AGL, powered by 200 horsepower engines. He has the best possible tools to do his job and the requisite training to do his job.

You can only speculate, you cannot make an authoritative claim.

For utine lubing.

Haven closely viewed the HMG from a different angle, that's not even rust.

Age has simply caught up with the HMG that the original black polish has peeled off. That's all there is to it.

This angle provides a different view. Look at the barrel.

What it requires is just a cathodic protection and a black polish.

You can also look closely at the nozzle of this 40mm(top photo)

You can compare it with this brand new 40mm about to be installed on NNS Karaduwa.

So, what we have is just a very old gun.

You're wasting your time with this guy. He's a guy in suits and a laptop. He probably has never even loaded a magazine in a pistol, let alone fire it. His so called knowledge is hearsay.

politics bro, politics.

this government spends more time/money on propaganda than any other government we ever had.

when approval ratings is low they'll either discover some money with no owner and no arrests, or rush the release of another batch of "chibok girls".

Nigerians are easily distracted by irrelevancies. it's a common ssocietal flaw.

funny how this happened day before the president will be away indefinitely.

my Nigeriagrin.

This country is like a board game and one of the tactics applied in winning a board game is distraction and deceit.....
The first citizen is about to go on another indefinite leave and the best way to do that without attracting negative reaction is to distract the people (ofcourse, those who don't think), while everyone is jumping in joy for the release of the so called "chibok girls", presido now brings up the issue of travelling out and ofcourse no one can be angry about that, instead they wish him safe journey and hope his health improves drastically....
Voila!, he has gotten the positive reaction needed...smiley...

@boldened, it's quite unfortunate, take a look at the just concluded BBN, see the way everyone was drooling over it... When one of the competitors couldn't say the anthem, there was an uproar, you need to see the arguments going on everywhere b'cos of nonsense..... these aren't things we should be concerned about, as it stands now, progress isn't being made at all
