forgiveness:The Ghana Empire (c. 400 until c. 1200), properly known as Awkar (Ghana or Ga'na being the title of its ruler) was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and western Mali. Complex societies based on trans-Saharan trade with salt and gold had existed in the region since ancient times[1] But the introduction of the camel to western Sahara in the 3rd century A.D. gave way to great changes in the area that became the Ghana Empire. By the time of the Muslim conquest of North Africa in the 7th century the camel had changed the ancient more irregular trade routes into a trade network running from Morocco to the Niger river. The Ghana Empire grew rich from this increased trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt allowing for larger urban centres to develop. It furthermore encouraged territorial expansion to gain control over the different trade-routes. When Ghana's ruling dynasty began is uncertain; it is mentioned for the first time in written records by Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī in 830.[2] In the 11th century the Cordoban scholar Abu Ubayd al-Bakri collected stories from a number of travelers to the region, and gave a detailed description of the kingdom. He claimed that the Ghana could "put 200,000 men into the field, more than 40,000 of them archers" and noted they had cavalry forces as well.[3] As the empire declined it was finally made a vassal to the rising Mali Empire at some point in the 13th century. When the Gold Coast in 1957 became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to regain its independence from colonial rule it was renamed in honor of the long gone empire from which the ancestors to the Akan people of modern-day Ghana are thought to have migrated.[4] The Ashanti (also spelled Asante) Empire (1701–1957) was an Akan empire and kingdom in what is now modern-day Ghana. The Ashanti Empire expanded from Ashanti to include the Brong-Ahafo, Central region, Eastern region, Greater Accra region, and Western region, of present-day Ghana. The Ashanti benefited from early firearm adoption. Combined with effective strategy, they fashioned an empire that stretched from central Ghana to the present-day Ivory Coast. Due to the empire's military prowess, wealth, architecture, sophisticated hierarchy and culture, Ashanti has been extensively studied and has more historiographies by European, primarily British, authors than almost any other indigenous culture of Sub-Saharan Africa. Starting in the late 17th century, the Ashanti king Osei Tutu (c. 1695 – 1717) and his advisor Okomfo Anokye, established the Ashanti Kingdom, with the Golden Stool of Asante as a sole unifying symbol. Osei Tutu oversaw a massive Ashanti territorial expansion,[3] building up the army by introducing new organization and turning a disciplined royal and paramilitary army into an effective fighting machine.[3] In 1701, the Ashanti army conquered Denkyira, giving the Ashanti access to the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean coastal trade with Europeans, notably the Dutch. The Ashanti Kingdom is the home to Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana's only natural lake. The state's current economic revenue is derived mainly from trading in gold bars, cocoa, kola nuts and agriculture; forest has also been cleared to plant cassava, maize and yams.[4] Today the Ashanti Kingdom survives as a constitutionally protected, sub-national proto-state[5] and traditional state in union with the Republic of Ghana. The current king of the Ashanti Kingdom is Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene. 1 Like |

When we say other countries are doing well than the supposed Giant of Africa .. a report like this buttresses our claim .. until you improve in the issues highlighted in this report, other countries won't buy into your giant status. http://www.businessdayonline.com/wealth-5-richest-nigerians-can-end-extreme-poverty-oxfam/ The Inequality report released by Oxfam International on Wednesday, revealed that the combine wealth of five richest Nigerians, put at $29.9 billion, could end extreme poverty in the country. The report, entitled ‘Inequality in Nigeria, Exploring the Drivers and obtained in Abuja, exposed the large and growing gap between the rich and poor in Nigeria. It revealed that the benefits of the nation’s economic growth had been captured by a few wealthy elite at the expense of the ordinary Nigerians. According to the report, the economic inequality is a key factor in the conflict in the North-Eastern states of the country. Oxfam International also disclosed that Nigeria’s richest man earned 8,000 times more in one day than a poor Nigerian would spend on basic needs in a year. It said that more than 112 million people were living in poverty in Nigeria, yet the country’s richest man spent one million dollars a day for 42 years to exhaust his fortune. According to the report, Nigeria is one of the few countries where the number of people living in poverty is on the increase despite the growth of the economy. The report also indicated that 69 per cent of people now live below the poverty line in North-Eastern states, compared to the 49 per cent in the South-West. It also showed that women were not being captured on the benefits of economic growth because they tended to be employed in low-skilled, low-paid informal jobs. According to the organisation, women represent between 60 per cent and 79 per cent of Nigeria’s rural labour force but are five times less likely to own their own land than men. It further stated that women were also less likely to have had a decent education, noting that over three quarters of the poorest women in Nigeria had never been to school. The report said that poor people did not benefit from Nigeria’s wealth because of high level of corruption and the excessive influence big business and some wealthy elite had over government and policy making. According to the report, public office holders steal estimated 20 trillion dollars from the treasury between 1960 and 2005, while multinational companies receive tax incentives estimated at 2.9 billion dollars a year. This development it said was three times more than Nigeria’s entire health budget. It further revealed that small and medium size businesses and workers in the informal sector, however, faced multiple taxes. “Despite being Africa’s biggest economy, the share of the national budget allocated to education, health and social protection is one of the lowest in the region. “In 2012, Nigeria spent just 6.5 per cent of its national budget on education and just 3.5 per cent on health. “By comparison, Ghana spent 18.5 per cent and 12.8 per cent, respectively in 2015. ‘’As a result, 57 million Nigerians lack safe water, over 130 million lack adequate sanitation and the country has more than 10 million children out of school.“ it stated. Commenting on the report, Mr Celestine Odo, Good Governance Programme Coordinator for Oxfam in Nigeria, said extreme inequality was undermining the economy and fermenting social unrest. According to him, Nigerian leaders must be more determined to tackling this terrible problem. Odo said that it was an irony that Nigerians were living in poverty in spite the abundance of wealth in the country. He said it was important to free millions of Nigerians from poverty by building a new political and economic system that would work for everyone and not just a fortunate few. “The government can make a start by tackling corruption, ensuring big business and wealthy individuals pay their fair share of tax, investing in vital public services, and protecting the rights of women,” Odo said. uzzyfire: 2 Likes |

While Nigeria's Universities are churning out international renowned people our Ghanaian and Kenyan brothers are snapping pictures of beautiful architectural buildings in there universities though I give Kudos to their management skills but what about the teaching skills? Abi na fine you wan go chop for University? Wetin dem don produce? Are they better than the ones produced by Nigeria's Universities? What area of specialty is your universities good at? We know Oxford University is good at Art, Massachusetts Institute is good at technology, Harvard University is good almost good at everything, and on our side, University of Ibadan is good at Art (especially literature), and Medicine, University of Lagos known for Art(law, journalism), University of Nigeria for (Business, Banking and Medicine), Obafemi Awolowo University (Business, law and Technology) etc Limit it to UI vs Nairobi University and University of Ghana. University of Ibadan Wole Soyinka - Chinuae Achebe Alexander Animalu - The only African member to date of the Advisory Board of the Euro-Journal Physica(B)[2] and the only African member of the Editorial Board of the Hadronic Journal Mikel Omolewa former President of UNESCO General Conference and Ambassador of Nigeria to UNESCO Emeka Andalucia former Commonwealth Secretary-General Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi - former President of the United Nations Human Rights Council and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). forgiveness:lol Oyo kept knocking on their boarders. Remember Great Oyo expanded from Nigeria to Togo and near the Ghanaian boarder. They were humiliated in the battle of Atakpame. The Akyem kingdom of Ghana asked for the military aid of Oyo and its vassal states against the Ashanti's control. They were humiliated at the battle of Atakpame when Oyo's coalition ambushed and defeated them. The loss was even recorded by the Europeans who had trade interests im the area. |
