So happy for Awoniyi getting the goals now, enough competition to iheanacho, either get playing time at city, or move away from city if not he gets obsolete.

Mickael2:

me I don't understand some people here. judging by your assumption Gomez should still be a starter for Germany because he was there when they won the world cup. Rohr already has a winning team? what have we won? you guys don't seem to understand the meaning of a winning team, we have won just three matches and when we forced a tough opposition against Senegal we didn't win, we don't have a winning team yet,we are still trying to build one. If someone is not performing for his club then he will not perform for his country that's simple logic and it is usually correct, Genk that will probably not win the Belgian league thrashed Tottenham but hey you want to assume that Henry has been playing against amateurs in the Belgian league. Ndidi came into the national team and started performing instantly, I guess people like you will still want onazi to start ahead of Ndidi
the examples you listed above does not support your claim.

1. M. Gomez was not part of the all conquering german side that won the world cup. By the way he is no longer a starter/regular cos he has passed his prime.

2. W. Ndidi never walked into eagles starting line-up despite his outstanding performance in the belgian league before moving to the EPL(not saying the belgian league is backward). He featured mostly as a sub prior to our last game against senegal. The funniest part was that he started alongside Onazi.

Bottomline: no matter a players blazing performance in club football, he'll always be gradually introduce into the national set up. Or y do u think Rohr had to start a match rusty Kelechi ahead of Kayode?. So it is not matter of prefering one player to another on sentimental bases man as you stated.

Look the era whereby a new invitees(the onobi's, igboun of this world) just walk into the team and gets automatic shirts is gone.

Or probably you're been confused with what making a Starting Line-up and making match day squad means.

Bringing Henry Onyekuru to West Ham would mean Bilic is getting it right again in the transfer market

The young Nigerian has been linked with a move to West Ham United

The young Nigerian has been linked with a move to West Ham United .

According to a recent report from Own Goal Nigeria , West Ham United have won the race to sign Henry Onyekuru from Eupen, and if the news is true it would be the best piece of business Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has done in quite some time.

Last summer was supposed to see a number of quality additions arrive at the London Stadium to supplement the likes of Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini. Instead West Ham fans watched bemused as the likes of Simone Zaza, Havard Nordtveit, Alvaro Arbeloa and Jonathan Calleri turned up.

It was not the impressive transfer window the Hammers faithful were expecting, nor anything close to the previous summer, when Bilic most certainly got it right.

However, if West Ham do indeed bring Onyekuru to the club it would be a very encouraging sign for the rest of the window.

After all, the 19-year-old is one of the most exciting teenagers in European football right now, scoring 22 goals and providing nine assists in 40 matches for his current club this season.
article continues below

Predominantly a left winger but also able to operate on the opposite flank, as a secondary striker or a centre forward, the young Nigerian is the real deal, and his early arrival would lay down a marker for the signings to come.

He may not be the biggest name yet he has bags of potential, and the great and the good of football will know that.

It is time Bilic started building a side that can be successful for years to come, and Onyekuru's capture could be key to that endeavor.

Liverpool Loanee Awoniyi Finally Living Up To His Billing As A Future Star, Nets Third League Goal

Taiwo Awoniyi is finally living up to his billing as a future star, with the Nigeria U23 international finding the net for the third game in a row in a playoff game staged at the JenS Vesting Stadion between Emmen and NEC Nijmegen.

Awoniyi came off the bench on the hour mark before scoring to give the visitors a 3-1 lead with two minutes remaining.

The number nine was at the edge of the box before he received a pass, showed good skill to evade a defender, then curled the ball past the goalkeeper.

Awoniyi opened his account for the season in the penultimate round of the regular season against AZ and netted his second goal in the Eredivisie against Heerenveen four days ago.

The 19-year-old is on a season-long loan at NEC from Premier League side Liverpool.

I do not see how anyone can prefer an unproven forward to a proven one.

At least Onyekuru has successfully played against defenders in a professional league, the Belgian league is one of the best in Europe, so I don't know how you can refer to them as 'backwater' defenders.

Osimhen on the other hand only has experience at age grade level, he is yet to face backwater defenders sef, just because he's in Germany doesn't make him better than Onyekuru for now, bear in mind, Onyekuru is just a year older.

If you must compare him, why don't you do so against the likes of Moses Simon who plays against the same 'backwater defenders', but still doesn't have 23 goals to his name?

CHINA OFFER WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO REJECT, REVEALS IDEYE
By Taiye Taiwo

The Super Eagles forward admitted that the offer he got from Asia was too good to be resisted

Nigeria international Brown Ideye disclosed that he was tempted by offers he received in January and could not resist joining Chinese Super League side, Tianjin Teda.

Ideye who was the leading topscorer in the Greek Super League before his departure conceded that it was not the ‘right time’ for him to leave the Karaiskakis Stadium but the enticing offer could not be rejected at the same time.

The 31-year-old forward who has found the back of the net once in eight league games for the Jaime Pacheco's side, stated that the Chinese topflight league is more difficult than what he expected while acknowledging the hospitality he received from the Chinese people.

“The age that I am now I guess I should be thinking about my life after football, so I go with the offer just to be happy,” Ideye told BBC World Service .

“I know it’s not the right time for me to leave Olympiacos but it’s difficult to reject - very difficult.

“The league [Chinese Super League] is really, really tough.

“The way I saw it before coming it was just like ‘You are playing with a bunch of kids, you are playing with a bunch of adults that don’t really know about the game’.

“These guys they know about the game, the Chinese players, they play football, they understand the game. It’s really tough, it’s really, really tough.

“The atmosphere inside the stadiums is unbelievable. It’s filled up with supporters, it’s filled up with crazy fans who always come out to cheer their team. I never thought it would be this way.

“They did everything, every foreign player has a translator, they assign a translator to you who will follow you to anywhere you go.

“They have really been a great help since I have been here - to all the foreign players.”

'I DIDN'T EVEN CONSIDER OURSELVES LOSING,' ALUKO LAMENTS FULHAM’S EXIT FROM PLAYOFFS
By Taiye Taiwo

The Nigeria international insists that he never expected the Cottagers to miss out from the playoffs final after Tuesday’s defeat

Sone Aluko has expressed his dissatisfaction after Fulham’s hopes of gaining promotion to the English Premier League next season got dashed following a 1-0 defeat to Reading .

After playing a 1-1 draw at the Craven Cottage, Yann Kermorgant’s 49th minute penalty kick sent Slavia Jokanović’s men back to the Championship next season with a 2-1 aggregate.

Aluko who was on parade for the full duration of the game, stated that he did not consider Fulham to lose at the Madejski Stadium and urged his teammates to take the positives from the defeat and bounce back with improvement next season.

Reading will play the winner between Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town in Wembley Stadium on May 29 for the final promotion spot to join Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion in the English topflight league next season.

"It's a tough one to take, a real tough one, I didn't even consider ourselves losing, I was so confident we would get to the final at least,” Aluko told GetwestLondon.

"They way we played, we probably deserved to win, second half especially we dominated the game and had some big chances but that's football and that's life.

"We have to get up and go again and as a team we need to bounce back from this, it's a really tough feeling to take.

"We can only go one way, we have to learn from this and improve, we had patches in the season where if we were slightly better we wouldn't be in the position we are and we'd be first or second.

"Over the course of the season these mistakes were made and you look at the amount of penalties we missed and we dominated most games so it's tough because we're a good team and we know it.

"There's a lot of improvement for us still."

Wolverhampton Wanderers Defender Iorfa A Target For Derby County

EFL Championship side Derby County are being linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dominic Iorfa.
The Express and Star says the England U21 international would command a transfer fee in the region of £4 million.

Iorfa has plenty of experience in the Championship, with 83 starts under his belt since he made his first team debut for Wolves in the 2014-15 campaign.

The 21-year-old has played nonstop at Wolves for the past six years following his arrival from Southend United.

Ahead of this summer's European U21 Championship, Iorfa is training with the English squad at St George's Park.

Kalu scores in Gent win
by Andrew Randa

Nigeria winger Samuel Kalu was on target for KAA Gent in their 5-2 win over Zule-Waregem in their Pro League playoff on Thursday.

The result meant Gent are now third on the log with 41 points, eight behind Anderlecht who are champions-elect.

Gent started the game with the Nigerian duo of Samuel Kalu and combative midfielder Anderson Esiti while Zulte had Nigerian striker Aliko Bala on the bench.

Mali striker Kalifa Coulibaly set Gent on their way with a smart finish in the 21st minute before Kenneth Saief made it 2-0.

Samuel Kalu got in on the act with another goal for Gent in the 59th minute as the ‘Buffaloes’ went on a riot against Zulte-Waregem's defence.

Coulibaly had his brace two minutes later for a 4-0 lead before Zulte captain Mbaye Leye scored a consolatory goal for the visitors.

Japanese striker Yaya Kubo scored the fifth goal for Gent before Henrik Dalsgaard clawed another goal back for Zulte to end the game at 5-2.

Esiti picked up a caution in the game while Kalu’s goal was his second of the season.

Babatunde to ink new Qatar SC deal
by George Akpayen

Michael Babatunde

Nigeria midfielder Michael Babatunde is set to be handed a new improved contract by Doha club Qatar SC.

Babatunde has enjoyed a fine spell with Qatar Sport Club in the second tier and played a vital role in their promotion to the top division in the Asian nation.

Already, the Qatar club are said to have turned down two offers from Europe to take the midfielder on loan for next season.

The former Heartland man took time to talk about his first stint with Qatar SC and now hopes his new form will help him to bigger things.

Babatunde did not hide his desire to return to international football.

"I had a good season but it's not enough to have a good season and be left out of your national team.

"I'm happy we gained promotion but I want to build on that form so I can get a chance to represent my country.

"I have been approached by several teams but I want to make a decision that will boost my chances of making a return back to the national team," Babatunde said.

Babatunde featured at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil for Nigeria.

Injured Olympic team star Segun Oduduwa fears he may not play again after he’s abandoned

Olympic team star Segun Oduduwa has cried out he may not play football again after he was abandoned following surgery for a major knee injury.

Oduduwa, who was injured in training with Rio Olympics-bound team in May, needs a second surgery after he was first operated in Qatar.

He was in Qatar for six months after which he was sent packing following the non-payment of his medical bills and the expiration of his visa.

His bills were to have been footed by the sports ministry.

“My career is at stake. The doctors told me I must do a corrective surgery for me to be able to work again and play football,” Oduduwa told Sporting Life.

His Olympic team coach Samson Siasia will spearhead an appeal to save the career of the highly promising central defender, who helped Nigeria win the 2015 U23 AFCON in Senegal, which qualified the country for last year’s Olympics.

“Segun Oduduwa is a big prospect and he has the talent ro be Nigeria’s best central defender,” he said.

“I would be glad if the (sports) minister) and the NFF could assist him to go for this corrective surgery.”

I agree but I disagree.
All your points about Osihmen is so very true. All those coaches couldn't have gotten it wrong. They like what they see in the boy. There are some players that you can't keep out of your team even if you are sure you won't start them. That's the charisma Osimhen has.

But to say we have many Onyekurus, I disagree totally oh. Onyekuru is not just all sprints if that's what you are trying to suggest.

Enjoy the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeJFwfrtRmQ

AllforJesus7:

My point is Osimhen is the gifted type of player. Every coaches' dream. A sharp striker who can lay deep passes from the midfield like a No.10.

Do you wonder why he walked straight into Siasia's team right from U17?
Or you wonder why Wolve's coach rushed him into the starting line up just fresh from injury?
Why does Rohr keep insisting on him?

The coaches simply see a technical gem on the training grounds.

He is untested but he is much more of a gem than Onyekuru.
The modern game prefers highly technical guys to those who can sprint all day with with no end result..... because in big and tough games, precision (of passes, shots, crosses, tackles etc) and technicality is what would matter most on the pitch.

Conclusion:
I see what Rohr and other coaches see in Osimhen and I stand with Rohr's decision to include him in the team ahead of Onyekuru whether tested or not.

We have many Onyekurus already (musa, simon etc.......they all play with their head down and final passes lets them down 7 out of 10 times).
But we rarely produce an Osimhen.
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 1:47am On May 19, 2017
An Etebo-less starting line up. You are kidding me.
AllforJesus7:

I have watched his highlights. Nothing special. Onyekuru is not a good crosser of the ball. He just loves to run at the wings and dribble into a cul-de-sac and he does not like to pass. Nothing to justify walking straight into our starting line up.

I see why Rohr prefers a highly technical scorer, passer and player (Osimen) over him.

Now remember he is still playing with back water defenders. The game is different with established leagues and defenders where he must be able to keep his head up and give cool passes/crosses to beat defenders and have a technical link up play. Otherwise he may end up as another Imoh Ezekiel or Musa.

I'll stick with the.....

Iwobi Iheanacho V. Moses

Mikel
Ndidi Onazi

starting line up.

He plays a lot like an inside forward and does not cross the ball much. He has an eye for a pass but can also be selfish with the ball.

His major strengths are his movement, speed and quick feet.

NPFL: WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT SO FAR?
By Solace Chukwu

With half the season gone, Goal reviews the opening stanza of the Nigerian league and picks out some emerging patterns

Sunday will see the resumption of the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League season after a month-long break.

It is one of the peculiar attractions of the NPFL that nothing is decided, or even looks definitive at this stage; well, except hapless and bumbling Remo Stars propping up the table!
However, even they are not yet doomed.

Nothing is settled at the top end of the table either, and indeed there is only a 16-point difference between both extremes, so not exactly a chasm. It is still a huge deficit to rein in, granted, but it would explain why even Lobi Stars, in 10th and habitual also-rans, continue to insist on their title ambitions.

Whatever may come in the second stanza, and there is sure to be intrigue aplenty, we can look back at the first half and see the patterns begin to form. Here are three things we’ve learnt so far.

Plateau United should be taken seriously

There are a number of factors that account for the unpredictability of the NPFL, chief among them the slight slacking off of both Enyimba and Kano Pillars. It has seen all semblance of hierarchy fly out the window. In theory, both those teams remain the biggest in the land, but they have been unable to come to grips with an increasingly volatile landscape.

It is precisely this sense of flux, of seizing the moment, that saw Enugu Rangers march to the title last season with an inscrutable inevitability. It may well do the same for Plateau United this year.

Perhaps we should have seen it coming. After a slightly wobbly start following promotion last term, they recovered admirably to finish way up in 8th place. This term, they have set about the challenge of the league with bloody-minded focus, and have goals from all departments of the team.

Interestingly, it is in the defence that they have really caught the eye, with Daniel Itodo a particular highlight, and Elisha Golbe doing the business on free kicks. Unsurprisingly, they have conceded the fewest number of goals in the league so far (12); do not mistake them for a defensive side though – they’ve also scored the most, with 27.

While there may be some comfort for the rest of the league in hoping for some sort of regression to the mean, Plateau United won’t go away any time soon.

Away wins are everything

Gone are the days when Kano Pillars romped their way to three consecutive titles on the back of a frankly awe-inspiring 12-year unbeaten home record. Not that teams are getting beat willy-nilly at home, of course. It is just that, by itself, it is no longer enough.

The last two league titles have been won by the team with the best record on its travels. Rangers came away with 15 last year to claim their seventh title, while Enyimba did the same the season before with a massive 23 point return (seven more than any other team managed) from away sojourns.

It is unlikely either of those numbers will be repeated this time around, but the pattern is already emerging. Every team that has managed to win a game on the road this season is in the top six. Clearly, this is both correlation and causation.

Coaches are starting to prove their worth

It is a trend that began last season, admittedly, but it has carried over into this. There has often been a perception of Nigerian domestic football as anti-intellectual, especially in the dugouts.

Sure enough, there have been managers successful for a sustained period, such as Kadiri Ikhana and Baba Ganaru, but having far and away the best teams in the competition makes it hard to decipher just how much of an input they had personally.

However, we have begun to see more of a style imprint from the technical crew on teams. Imama Amapakabo’s Rangers last season were slick and fearless, and though they fell away this season, it was clear his position had become untenable. The duo of Abdul Maikaba and Fidelis Ilechukwu are this season adding a feather to their caps.

Maikaba overachieved tremendously with an exciting but inexperienced Wikki Tourists side, guiding them to a place in the Caf Confederation Cup, before moving over to free-spending Akwa United.

The Promise Keepers underwhelmed hugely last term, finishing just two points clear of the drop. Maikaba has got them up to fifth at the midway point, and this despite a poor start – no wins in the opening five games – as he tried to come to grips with his team.

Ilechukwu’s MFM have developed a reputation for starting well before flaming out, but under him, the Olukoya Boys play an exciting, possession-based style and are prolific. The lack of staying power may not be unconnected to their relative youth, but you know what you’re getting when you watch them play.

The rise of the coaches: long may it continue.

Sir Clinton.... lol.... no be like that oooo.....

This same Cameroun conquered Africa and didn't even have the services of Onana, Choupo-moting, Matip, M'bia, Bassong, and even ageless Kameni.

In Fabrice Ondoa of Sevilla, they have one of Africa's best Goalies now alongside Ajax's Andre Onana.

Ofcos, Ikeme trumps them but he is injured and Alampasu and Emma Daniel are two Young Nigerian goalies who belong to Ondoa's and Onana's generation and can rival the two young Cameroonians depending on how much they keep progressing.

In Akpeyi and Ezenwa... we just have "makeshift goalies".... Goalies we are just managing.

The real deals for the near future are Daniel and Alampasu for now until another joins that bracket of special rising Naija Goalies for this growing generation of the Super Eagles.

In their Defence, They have Teiku, Ngadjui and co.... yes their clubsides are not as reputable as Mainz of Germany or even KAA Gent or Chelsea but uhmmm.... don't be too quick to write them off okay.... Truth is Nigeria commands a fearsome array of talents and a really scary squad albeit a very young one still gelling... but we must not underrate the Camerounians.

In the French ligue 1, They have Their Talisman and inspirational Captain, Benjamin Moukandjo of Lorient whose goals helped his team stay up I think. He is one to watch..... he alongside that Vincent Aboubakar lad of Besiktas (formerly of Porto) and Bassogog who is surprisingly china-based now.... (I remember when I dropped a news on that I think many pages back... me or someone did).

So in conclusion.... Cameroun are African champs so we must accord them that little respect. And I say "little" because if we pay them huge or too much respect, it will make us overly cautious... and I don't want that... we need our team to be daring and have that "Kick these guys' asses and show them they are nothing" attitude which translates into a kind of fearlessnesses that will make us get pass the so-called "Cameroun becomes a different animal when they see Nigeria" anthem and beat these Camerounians for good, better and the best....

So it matters not where the camerounians play... they gave the rest of Africa the middle finger when they defied the odds and won their fifth title with majority of same players from "Backwater leagues/clubs"

Let us just focus on our game and beat them silly. I just wanna humble the African Champs.... wink

. Chai, see Cameroun squad, no single player in the English Premiership, the most glamourous league in the world and they want to compare themselves to Nigeria and believe they will qualify ahead of Nigeria for the world cup. We will see how they will beat us to the world cup with all these players from mushroom clubs.

AIG07:

the examples you listed above does not support your claim.
