DEFINITION

The term "skyscraper" was first applied to buildings of steel framed construction of at least 10 stories in the late 19th century, a result of public amazement at the tall buildings being built in major cities like Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, and St. Louis.[3] The first steel-frame skyscraper was the Home Insurance Building (originally 10 stories with a height of 42 m or 138 ft) in Chicago, Illinois in 1885. Some point to Philadelphia's 10-story Jayne Building (1849–50) as a proto-skyscraper, or to New York's seven-floor Equitable Life Building (New York City), built in 1870, for its innovative use of a kind of skeletal frame, but such designation depends largely on what factors are chosen. Even the scholars making the argument find it to be purely academic......

The Emporis Standards Committee defines a high-rise building as "a multi-story structure between 35–100 meters tall, or a building of unknown height from 12–39 floors" and a skyscraper as "a multi-story building whose architectural height is at least 100 m or 330 ft. Some structural engineers define a highrise as any vertical construction for which wind is a more significant load factor than earthquake or weight. Note that this criterion fits not only high-rises but some other tall structures, such as towers.

The word skyscraper often carries a connotation of pride and achievement. The skyscraper, in name and social function, is a modern expression of the age-old symbol of the world center or axis mundi: a pillar that connects earth to heaven and the four compass directions to one another.[8]

A loose convention of some in the United States and Europe draws the lower limit of a skyscraper at 150 m or 490 ft.

Bhuuuhahaha! Based on the first @bolded

Lagos has 8 skyscrapers completed than the whole of Kenya. Sorry

DEFINITION OF HIGHRISE

Various bodies have defined "high-rise":

Emporis Standards defines a high-rise as "A multi-story structure between 35–100 meters tall, or a building of unknown height from 12–39 floors." shocked grin

According to the building code of Hyderabad, India, a high-rise building is one with four floors or more, or 15 to 18 meters or more in height...
The International Conference on Fire Safety in High-Rise Buildings defined a high-rise as "any structure where the height can have a serious impact...
In the U.S., the National Fire Protection Association defines a high-rise as being higher than 75 feet (23 meters), or about 7 stories.[5]
Most building engineers, inspectors, architects and similar professionals define a high-rise as a building that is at least 75 feet (23 m) tall.[citation needed]

I think its the babies who have grown bigger. Before modernity, women had special diets that kept the weight of the baby in check. Now doctors are recommending the opposite. Even those who do not get a CS nowadays still get a cut to make more space for birth.

You may be right to an extent. I would imagine its something akin to what's been happening to Mugabe after he chased the whites. Its a way of Western control of African governments and protection of their economic interests. May be he did just a part of it grin

He was a Luo, right? What about the stories of cannibalism? Last time I checked Luos did not have that kind of reputation.

The political circumstances that led to Uhuru becoming the president is very different from the circumstancs in Togo. Nobody even expected that Uhuru Kenyatta would run for an elective seat in the first place.
He lost a parliamentary seat in 1997, and was so devastated, reportedly drowned his sorrow in alcohol, and nearly quit politics were it not for tthe then president Daniiel Moi, who nominates him to parliament, then gave him the job as the finance minister. In 2002 he ran for the presidency, but was severly defeated. He only managed to win in 2013 after his party formed an alliance with him as the flag- bear. As u can see, it isnt as a result of his progeny that he got here, he struggled, just like the other politicians in Kenya.

Tell me about Togo's Eyadema. Father dead, son immediately sworn in as president.
Uhuru had almost 0% chance of becoming president. Its the ICC that made him one. People arose to vote him in as they looked at it as a colonial victimization. And what were those people thinking? A favourite son of a freedom fighter? Even I could have voted for him (I did not, because they run on the basis of a tribal alliance and my tribe wasn't invited undecided )

The person responsible for creating this thread need to have his mental faculty checked out.

Why, would someone in a good state of mind be comparing Nigeria to kenya, what is this a joke, kenya i mean seriously kenya to Nigeria?

Most of the argument going on here are even stupid, seriously people can be this ignorant in this age and time, imagine someone saying kenya has a satelitte launch capability, the FFFUK.

Why would an educated and resonable fellow be camparing Nairobi with Lagos, the money, economic activities(formal/informal, legal/illegal) that flows in lagos a day is bigger than that of the entire nation of kenya.

Tell me why would america be comparing itself to brunei.
Why will america compare itself to switzerland.

Why will china compare itself to singapore ,macau.

Why would britain be comparing itself to norway.

Why would south africa comparing itself to mauritainia, namibia.

Why would Nigeria be comparing itself to kenya, ghana, benin, ivory coast.

Two of the most significant and biggest project in africa.

The Nigeria-Morocco pipeline will have a positive impact on over 300 million inhabitants, Bourita said, noting that it would speed up electrification projects across West Africa, and serve as a basis for the creation of a competitive electricity regional market.

http://northafricapost.com/17865-nigeria-morocco-gas-pipeline-project-taking-shape.html

He said the project would be the single largest stream in the world.
“The refinery and fertiliser projects will create job opportunities for the communities and Nigerians when it becomes operational.
“The refinery will have a refining capacity of about 650,000 barrels of crude a day,’’ he said.
Alake said the project would force down the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in the country and save money spent on importation.
He said that projects such as these would optimise government revenue and wean Nigeria from relying solely on oil.

Lagos dey wound Kenya since nineteen cridi. grin

Lol, so I posted buildings with over 20 floors and you're posting me buildings with over 12 floors and claiming you have more? Dude, I can't even list all buildings over 12 floors in Nairobi. There are some neighborhoods where all residential buildings are over 12 floors with no names. The fact that you can even list ALL buildings in Lagos with over 12 floors is testament how you have so few of them. Anyway I couldn't help but notice from your list you have only 10 complete buildings over 20 COMPLETE floors in comparison to Nairobi's 22 lol.

Buildings over 20 floors.

Nairobi - 22

Lagos - 10

Exactly, that's how humans can be very selfish and sentimental. Everyone wants to identify with success. They forget that everything has a baggage and comes at a cost.

When Nigerian Agbani Darego broke the record and became the first black woman to win miss world. All Africans were quick to identify her as a Black African, even the black americans and carribeans were not left out of the famzing.
But if it is a Nigerian woman reprimanded for something wrong, everyone will be quick to point to Nigeria.
That is double-standardness to me.

LOVE ME AND LOVE MY DOG as the adage goes. You cannot claim you love me and hate my dog.

This is one reason why i will always defend Southern Nigerians to outsiders, even though it is obvious that they are the ones spoiling the Nigerian image to the world with criminality. Cos at the same time, they produce more achievers who also make Nigerians prouder at the same time.
Yeah it's what Chimamanda Adichie calls the danger of a single story.

Idi Amin was not Luo. Milton Obote was. Idi Amin was of a Sudanic ethnicity that's closely related to Luos though. His cannibalism was not an ethnic culture but more of an individual thing and has also never been verified. Just hearsay and speculation.

Why, because we are not in your league.

Cool down bro. Substance is all we need.

authough we have change your style of argument to more of educational impact. it seems you are new and you want to over hype. nigeria can even be compared to somalia depending on the yarstick you want to use in measuring. Usa and canada are always compared by forbes. So what make nigeria case diffrence. London as a city generate second largest income behind newyork and per with tokyo in the whole world. But it is absolutely wrong to even compare london with nigeria. You can compare country against each orther in whatever form. And not city to a country

about 65 percent nigeria gdp comes from lagos: therefore lagos is an important strategy in niigeria economy:

country like germany and usa have a diffrent city with diffrent amount of income but it aeems nigeria is modeling uk where most of the income are largely from one or two cities.

So does that mean that any black african who is not a burnt offering like the average Ghanaian or Kenyan is bleaching?
Must all Africans look like burnt offerings?

Are all Europeans blonde? Are all Europeans black-eyed? Are all Europeans ghostly pale white?

Apart from Kofi Annan, what other good thing has ever come out of Ghana?
because Nigeria is a failed state, you can never have a secretary general of the United Nations come from that sh1thole.

Yes. Many northern minorities also complain of marginalization.
Many FCT indigenes have been denied their rights as citizens of Nigeria. Many were resettled out of their ancestral lands in Abuja without compensation by the FG. Many like those in Southern Kaduna have been demanding for their own state due to Hausa domination. Many more.

I think things like human rights in developing countries (Africa especially) are things that come gradually with time as the populace mature more mentally.

The election of Buhari all boils down to tribal politics of sentiments. With the way things are going now, it is very clear that there will be a change of alliance in 2019 just as there was in 2011 and 2015.
Although, apart from politics of tribal sentiments, allegations of corruption and the mere desire for change also brought about the election of Buhari.

Although i was a staunch Goodluck supporter, i am still happy to an extent about Buhari's election, cos it sent a new wave of message all through Nigeria that power for 8 years in no longer mandatory and that every administration must sit tight or be thrown out every 4 years. That is more like the way democracy should be. Strong competition between every political tenure to outcompete the previous.

Na so. People felt that with GEJ in power Nigeria would be no more so they went for broke.

He said that projects such as these would optimise government revenue and wean Nigeria from relying solely on oil.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/dangote-17bn-dollars-refinery-create-300000-jobs-official/
good news. but the funmy thing is oil is not limited to nigeria only in weat africa. there is possibility ghana ,senegal ,liberia might start similar project simce all of fhem now posses a sizeable amount of oil export: russia is consructing the largest pipline network to china. Saudi arabia too may also start some project equal to that soon. Nigeria should focus her attention on brain power and not natural resources. Uk and getmany are the leading example. Despite almost to zero natural resources they are a formidable force to world economy.
