Kenya Launches New Madaraka Express Railway

- $3.2bn (£2.5bn)
- 472km (293 miles)
- Three-and-a-half years construction

Kenya has inaugurated its first major new railway for more than a century, running from the capital, Nairobi, to the port city of Mombasa.

The $3.2bn (£2.5bn) Chinese-funded railway is the country's biggest infrastructure project since independence. It was also built by a Chinese company and many of the drivers and engineers will be Chinese to start with, while Kenyans are being trained to take over.

For now, the line stretches for 472km (293 miles). But there is a 25-year masterplan for it to link land-locked South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and eastern DR Congo to the Indian Ocean. It took three-and-a-half years to build the railway line, using Chinese track-laying technology. The line is interposed by 79 bridges, two major stations, seven intermediate stations and 23 passing stations.

It takes four-and-a-half hours to get from Mombasa to Nairobi, compared to nine hours by bus or 12 hours on the previous railway. The railway passes through some of Kenya's famed national parks. Each station on the railway, known as the Madaraka Express, has been designed to blend in with the local environment. Athi River station is intended to mirror the nearby hills, while the stripped Miasenyi station was inspired by zebras.

The spectacular Mombasa terminus was designed to resemble waves and ripples in the water radiating from the central tower.

The platforms and track lines represent the ocean shores.

Nairobi is the main station and passenger terminal. It will also be a locomotive maintenance depot for vehicles, wagons and coaches. It is designed to resemble two locomotives approaching each other.

Our leaders keep playing politics with everything no matter how minute that thing may seem. We as a country is still blinded my ethnic divisions, hate, and clannishness to even have a foresight for such magnificent project that will ease the movement of the populace within the country...
Our leaders don't know that things like these harmonize and bridge the gap of hate and marginalization being cried across the country. We politick with everything... **pukes**

Congratulations to Kenya for this milestone attained. I was just thinking how our leaders have pressed the retrogressive button on this country with their nonchalant attitude while watching the launching of this Standard Gauge Railway by Kenyatta which was streamed live on Facebook by CGTN yesterday .

So Kenya is now paradise on earth abi? Why don't they ever talk about AL shabab millitants and the killings they carry out there as we seem to mention Boko Haram constantly even in the Southern parts where they don't strike? When they act, they are usually deadly also isn't it Kenya that had two sitting presidents at a time because the one in power refused to relinquish it to the true winner so they had to operate under two presidents(imagine). Is that not where the Massai tribe aka blood drinkers live, they are one of the most archaic tribe in the world

They keep hyping and hyping the place are you trying to say there is no crime there, no tribalism, no avarice and other issues synonymous with the black race? Mttcheww.

And who told you it's Nigerians hyping the place? How can one be more loyal to a foreign land than his or her own country, isn't that the definition of stupidity? Unless they actually own Kenyan passports before I can make sense of it.

Kenya isn't a poor country. Kenya is East Africa biggest economy. The issue with NIGERIA is our leaders lack foresight and when they do something big, it's to earn publicity. Yeah and that publicity is what we give them.

Kenya is akso being affected by poor leadership while Nigeria thinks the level of her current development is enough for it's citizens.

The government generates billions in revenue and spends penny on infrastructure. Politicians are the biggest buisness men, they know how to target their audience well and hit well. They generate 200billion naira and then spend 2billion naira (100mill to repair roads, 200 million to create jobs we don't see and ready on 3-4 infrastructure in strategic locations in the country).

After this, the mass comes out to shout the government is working oooo. Now tell me where's the remaining 198 billion?

The truth remains African leaders lack foresight.

God bless Nigeria.
God bless our president too.

when will this kind of development happen in Nigeria....
Re: Kenya Launches New Madaraka Express Railway (pictures) by claremont(m): 8:18pm On Jun 04, 2017
Let me digress a bit to address the underlying issue i.e. corruption.

Corruption is endemic in most African countries, but the difference lies in the degree of corruption. The degree of corruption in Nigeria when compared to Kenya, Ghana e.t.c is much higher, so high that it's in the interest of the corrupt to ensure public facilities do not work. Therein lies the problem. I think every right-thinking Nigerian who observes infrastructural development in less endowed countries like Kenya cannot help but do a comparison with Nigeria.

The issue of the epileptic power supply in Nigeria is an issue of corruption. A thousand Fashola's will not curb blackouts if the underlying issue of corruption is still there.
