Scaw Metals and Guma in R400m new Ghanaian plant
November 28, 2013
Robert Gumede’s vision of building a Pan African investment vehicle via the Guma Group has received a shot in the arm after landing a steel deal to venture into the oil rich Ghana.
An announcement released yesterday has Guma partnering with South African steel manufacturer Scaw Metals and the Jospong Group of Companies to set up a R400m plant in Ghana.
The announcement released by Scaw Metals said the company will construct a new grinding media plant in Tema, Ghana. “This new plant seeks to significantly increase the company’s grinding media capacity on the African continent. This move, valued at more than US$40m, is done in partnership with the Guma Group, a South African player, as well as the Jospong Group of Companies, which is based in Ghana.”
The announcement said the consortium will bring additional investment to Ghana by increasing the steel product range, through a company which will produce other steel related products including Rolled Products; long steel products, reinforcing bars, low and high-carbon wired rods, reinforcing coil, etc.
“Our investment showcases the value that partnerships between the private and public sector can bring to infrastructure development in Africa,” said Gumede.
This plant serves as a catalyst for the further enhancement of business to business relationships, which is much needed for job creation and trade in the region.”
Gumede‘s march largely represent the changing face of the South African economy. He is part of a new class, few it must be said, of black businessmen who have broken into the mainstream commercial activity and are now looking for a place within the industrial sector and across the continent. Gumede will be largely known for leading the development of an ICT company Gijima into the JSE.
His investment vehicle, the Guma Group, is tagged as a Pan-African, black owned multi-disciplinary investment company with operations globally and across the African continent. The group is said to employ over 12 000 people and focusing in energy power generation, ICT, infrastructure development, tourism, property real estate and shopping centre development.
Yesterday’s announcement said the Tema plant, with an annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons, should become operational within 18 months and will offer significant job opportunities in the local community.”
The Scaw Metals Group is the largest producer of cast high chrome grinding media in the southern hemisphere and is the leading producer and supplier of high chrome and forged grinding balls primarily to the African platinum, copper and gold mining industries.”
We are delighted that we will be opening a plant in Ghana and this is outbound investment for a South African entity,” said Markus Hannemann, Chief Executive of the Scaw Metals Group.
The Ghanaian government has made a great push for the local manufacturing industry to stimulate economic growth and provide job creation.”
He noted that Scaw Metals already has a presence in Ghana. The company’s Ghanaian operation was registered in 2011 as a regional sales office to service the West African region. With offices in Tema, Scaw Ghana functions as a local point of contact for all of the products manufactured in South Africa by the Scaw Metals Group that may be in demand in the region.
“From our experience in Ghana thus far, we are certain that we will be able to fully utilise the vast potential in the region. The skills development we will be providing for the employees of the plant will make sure that our plant will have world-class standards and have a significant knock-on effect in the local community,” said Hannemann.
“We are looking forward to the partnership with the Scaw Metals Group and supplying the region will grow the business further. We will also look for other steel beneficiation opportunities in Ghana”, says, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chairman, Jospong Group of companies.

Many Nigerians think they know a lot about South Africa but dololo!!!
Nice one from southafrica, good to see a black owned company dominating at least, this shows the southafricans are learning from the whites in their midst. Nigeria still has a high number of entrepreneurs though, some silently making waves, this is why Mark zuckerbeg had to come see the great strides for himself in the lCT sector.
As a matter of fact we also have the best female entrepreneurs in the continent and one of the highest in the world.

Kk.
Buh i think you sometimes speak with so much authority on historical issues. Are you a professor? cheesy

As much as only a few people have established the Tiv origin from Congo, no one has come out to disprove them either. A white historian established it in the 30's and some few Tiv professors have also supported this with their research. As of today, this is the predominant school of thought among Tivs. So, really, who are we to question them about what they choose to accept about themselves?

Muafrika2 has listened to your video on Tiv language and you can see that apparently he could pick some words from the video (which i believe to be correct). I don't know of any Tiv person on nairaland who i can tag to confirm, i will try to ask some tiv friends of mine to confirm when i have the chance. Perhaps MtuMsuper n others will give a try.

The Congo theory is misleading. There are no Bantoid languages spoken in Congo. The Bantu original homeland is still Cameroon. I don't really care how the Tivs identify. I am speaking about their language. It's Bantoid in nature. Bantoid languages originate in Cameroon-Nigerian border, so there is that. Bantoid language is one of the linguistic evidence used to link the Bantu migration from West Africa theory. If Tiv migrated from Congo, then that theory is completely thrown in doubts. Think about it? Bantoid languages are very old. The Bantu languages are derived from the Northern Bantoid languages of Nigeria-Cameroon area.

ALL BANTU LANGUAGES ARE BANTOID BUT NOT BANTOID LANGUAGES ARE BANTU.

Let me make you a diagram

Most of the languages in Africa belong to the Niger-Congo family.
The largest subdivision under this are Atlantic-Niger languages.
This is further broken down into another subdivision of language groupings, the main ones being Volta-Niger and Benue-Congo.
Volta-Niger contains language groups like Idomoid, Yoruboid, Igboid, etc. My main focus is the latter group, Benue-Congo.
This group is broken down into Platoid and Bantoid-Cross River.
Bantoid-Cross River is further broken down into Cross River, Southern bantoid, etc.
Southern Bantoid is the broken down into Tivoid-Beboid, Ekoid-Mbe, Bantu, etc. This is where the split happens.

Languages classified as 'oid' of another language does not necesarily mean that they will have same counting words or so many similar words. The similar words may be as few as 10% and only exist in a section of the vocabulary which you may not know. Imfact, the vocabulary may be almost 100% different buh the structure n lexicon of the language remains the same. The linguists who carried out these classifications were professionals who definitely used many criteria to judge.
Do you want to know why I especially use the numerical systems?
Very basic features like numerical systems, family units, body parts, farm verbiage etc are very primitive, less likely to evolve and aren't complex ideas that evolve quickly. The basic features usually are less subjected to change and when Linguists look for relationship, they are the first go-to. Take for example, Yoruba and Igbo have evolved to be very different and they are not mutually intelligible, but if you look at the words for body parts, you would start to notice the relationship and see similar cognates. Even though Yoruba, Ebira, and Igede are very different languages, a way to determine historical relationship is to look at their numerical system and you would see some similarities. This is what I did.

Any affixes like -oid or -ic, are used in language denotation. You have -ic in Semitic, Afro-Asiatic etc which comes from Latin, although there is a Greek equivalence (ikos). -Ic means having some characteristics of. Oid is derived from Greek and it means resembling or behaving like. Oid is never use to equate one thing to another or for the same. Let me show you an example:

In Nigeria, you have Yoruboid branch. This branch includes Igala, Yoruba etc.
Igala is a Yoruboid language, but that that doesn't make Igala the same as Yoruba.

You have the Northern Bantoid branch. This branch include Bantu languages, Tivoid languages, etc
Tiv is Southern Bantoid, but that doesn't make Tiv the same as Bantu.

Take for instance, there are languages like Alago n others in Nasarawa state that are classified as Idomoid languages buh i have asked my mother n others who speak Idoma well (cos i sadly don't sad) and they asserted that some of these so called Idomoid languages are no longer understood at all by Idomas. The languages have so diverged that the best an Idoma speaker can do is pick 1 or 2 words when those languages are spoken. And u can imagine that Idomas n these Idomoid ethnic groups are still even close to each other geographically.
The very few words you can pick out aren't the only words that are shared cognates. Linguists determine cognates based on patterns not just mutual intelligibility alone. Lexical intelligibility of these cognates are often more similar than in the spoken form. You also have the issue of tone changes which can change the mutual intelligibility of a tonal language. A Spanish speaker maybe able to understand 40% of what a Portuguese speaker is saying. However in written format, this could jump to 90%.

Now, u can't compare Tivs who are the farthest away west of the Bantoid speakers with Bantu languages as far as Kenya. I think you should instead try comparing Bantoid n Bantu languages in Cameroon who are immediate neighbours and i believe you will be shocked at the similarities you would find.
That comparison was actually a mistake on my part. Yes, the Bantoid languages which includes Bantu languages in Cameroon are the closest, which throws out the Congo story.

****Personally, i think Bantoid speakers are the closest relatives/representatives of the Bantus at the period the Bantu expansion started. They must have decided to move westwards and definitely intermixed with other neighbouring aboriginal groups which probably diluted their Bantu features to an extent leaving them as BANTOID****
- Bantus are Bantoid. Bantoid is a larger group consisting of Bantu, Tivoid languages, Ejagham languages, etc. Bantoid is not a diluted version of Bantu. Sorry if I didn't explain this better originally. Bantoid consists of many language groupings of which Tivoid, Ejagham, Bantu, etc are a part of.

The Oyo State Government is to generate 1,000 mega watts from wastes following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with some power-generating firms.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the state government on Wednesday in Ibadan signed an MoU with Siemens International, MRF1 and West African Energy on conversion of waste to energy.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi said that the project would promote industrialisation and generate employment opportunities.

He said that the project was anchored on his administration’s developmental tripod of restoration, transformation and repositioning.

Ajimobi stated that the objective of the present effort was to uplift the state from its civil service status to an industrialised one.

“As part of our development agenda of restoration, transformation and repositioning, we have come up with an agreement with these power-generating firms which had culminated into today’s signing of MOU.

“These companies, Siemens, MRF1 and West African Energy, are well-known companies in electronics, energy and ICT.

“ The objectives of the project is to industrialise the state and create employment for the youths.

“The power will be distributed across the zones in the state. We really want to take our youths off the street and get them fully employed,” he said.

Mr Nasir Giwa, the representative of Siemens International, said that the state on completion of the project would be the first to sell or export power to the national grid.

Giwa stated that the moment power was being generated in the state, many other developmental activities would naturally follow.

“We believe that power generation is a fulcrum of commercial growth.

“ Once it is achieved, other things would naturally follow and Oyo State will be the first State to export power to the national grid,” he said.

Also, Mrs Lolade Oresanwo, the representative of West African Energy, said that the project would create employment opportunities in the excess of 10,000.

“The success of this project is the importance of power to industrialisation. When there is power, there are more employment opportunities,” Oresanwo said.

No, that is not true maam.
The other towns and cities in Lenya are booming as well.

Surely, Kenya wouldnt have tied there with SA if the real estate sector was only concentrated in the small par of Kenya that is Nairobi.

The coastal towns of Mombasa, Lamu and Malindi boast of very a very robust real estate sector.

Then there are the othrr towns of Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kericho, Naivasha, Thika, Kisii, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu etc.

It doesnt mean that there is no food for the people in the North. The govt imports grains a distributes to the communities in this part of the country. However Kenya is grappling wi the influx of the refugees from the bordering countries such a Somalia and SSudan.
They stretch the govt resources so much that the govt i forced to call for assistance abroad. Kenya is one of the countries hosting the largest numbers of refugees.

Look at the 2010 famine fo example, that was said to have killed nearly 150 thousand people in Somalia, while in Kenya, only 60 died....and the were refugees who had escaped from Somalia, but arrived in Kenya too late. Meaning the Kenya govt efforts to alleviate hunger in the North is effective.

As for Nigeria., the regions facing famine are unfortunately infested by the BH, unless the people manage to flee the B contrplled regions to the govt regions, then they are saved.

Vaax the report is about Governments in those countries supporting investments and thinking ahead. Can you really boast of having more innovators than Nigeria individually? Of course you can't. Even in terms of technology and lCT you can't mess with us, just that in your country the policies encouraging such are well structured compared to Nigeria.
Even your vice president begged our business men to provide jobs for your youths.

Vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is seeking to strengthen ties between Ghana and Nigeria and he did just that by meeting a powerful delegation of top Nigerian businessmen and women at the Flagstaff house.

The purpose of the visit was to explore the business and investment opportunities of both countries so as to increase free-border trade.

Nigeria has always remained a main partner in Ghana’s West African growth mainly due to the economic and cultural ties of both countries.

Top on the agenda was the reformation of the port system in Ghana “that would make it the leading ones in West Africa”.

“We tried very hard to get Nigerian banks to Ghana and it has really benefited Ghana a lot. We don’t have a fear of opening up. We can learn a lot from each other,” Bawumia revealed.

Earlier, the former president, John Mahama encouraged the Nigerian government to stay resolved in becoming the economic power of West Africa.

Why are Ghanaians joining the bandwagon of Africans risking their lives to move to Europe? I saw this on the news how they died of thirst in the Sahara and was shocked Ghanaians could do that.

Even your vice president begged our business men to provide jobs for your youths.
using the ratio equation. you may be wrong. ghanian has a lot of innovators but comparing it with nigeria population definetly ghana is small. In terms of ratio ghana may take the lead. Imagine a 1 milliion innovator seving entire population of180million. This is very minimum.using similar ratio it is small comparing to ghana population. My figure is just a rough extimation.

good country will call and beg for investor, amywhere just like the way nigeria govt is encouraging foreign investment.

GREAT american is even beging for forieng investment . china is investing im the usa. so ghana case is not a big deal.
