The Awujale has moved capital severally. Around 1000 AD, the capital was at Eredo in the present Lagos state, a place identified as the largest city in the medieval world. Both Ijebu ode and Ijebu Igbo are apparently new cities. The Awujale was headquartered in Eredo in the past and it was contemporary to an ancient Ife, when Oduduwa arrived, they married in instead of abdicating like others. You might think those ancient people lived in tiny villages but they actually lived in huge metropolises, built storey buildings and etc.

It is you people that keep dating Ife to 51 Kings ago, other people know it is 141 kings ago at various locations.

Pls bro, if you have facts to everything you've been saying kindly put them forward because what I have seen about your input so far is that you are using logic not fact. If u have facts that 141 kings has ruled in ife, and how old is ife pls kindly put it forward. Enough is enough

Alaafin is Oduduwa's first son, while Ooni is custodian of the source of Yoruba history. Both kings share a rare place of honour in the Yoruba pantheon of Kings. OP, please don't diminish the importance of Ooni.

The situation the Yorubas are in is just like during the Holy Roman Empire that once ruled in Europe: In that empire, the German king was the Emperor, while the Pope was the monarch of the source of European Christian civilization (Rome where the emperor went to be crowned). Both rulers were important. It is the same thing with the Yorubas today. Both Alaafin and Ooni are important to the Yorubas for different but complimentary reasons. None should be denigrated.

Ooni is traditionally the Custodian of the Source of the Yoruba, while Oramiyan (Alaafin) is the Son of the Founder of the Yoruba. Both posts are to be respected the same way the posts of the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor were respected. That's the point. They are different but have contributed in their own rich ways to Yoruba civilization, so you cannot say this one is greater than the other, because there is no basis for comparison. Just a basis for respect.

And 'I/Ugbomokun' was the settlement the Ugbos moved to in presentday Ondo state after they left Mokuro in Ife.

From where they launched raids to kidnap Ife people till Moremi entered the picture.

Ugbomokun or Igbomokun was never Ife's name at anytime. Stop with the falsity.

Igbomokun. That is a very ancient town as far Yoruba/Lucumi history is concerned. It is a town where momentous events took place hundreds of years ago. As a historian, I wish I was a witness.

BEFORE YORUBA HISTORY IS DISTORTED
All human beings are equal before God; the Almighty. He is
our Sustainer. The Creator of the worlds. However, God in
His infinite wisdom has created man and placed some
above others. It is a providential design to achieve universal
order, harmony and peace. He has placed the kings over
their subjects to ensure coordination. I love history, and I
loathe history being distorted. I am neither an ethnic
chauvinist nor jingoist. But I have special affinity for history.
It is worrisome when people concoct genres of myth in the
face of impeccable facts. I wish to delve a bit into in the
history of Obaship in Yorubaland ,with a special focus on
His Imperial Majesty, The Alaafin of Oyo and His Royal
Highness, The Ooni of Ile-Ife.
History has been so kind and friendly to the Alaafin that he
does not need to get into any battle for supremacy with any
Oba, either in Yorubaland or anywhere in the universe. No
other Oba had combined humility with royalty to meet the
demands of modernity like the incumbent Alaafin of Oyo,
His Imperial Majesty, Kabiyesi Iku Baba Yeye,Oba Lamidi
Olayiwola Adeyemi III .
According to impregnable sources of Yoruba history,
Oduduwa is the ancestor of the Yorubas. Oduduwa gave
birth to a son, Okanbi. Okanbi gave birth to seven male
children (Oranmiyan, Olowu, Alaketu, Onisabe, Orangun,
Olupopo, Oba Benin). Nowhere in history is Ooni
mentioned as one of the Yoruba Royal Families. The Ooni is
no blood relation of the seven sons of Okanbi. Historically,
Ooni has no traditional or political authority in the Yoruba
hierarchy. Riches and political fame of the Ooni from
1954_when Ooni Adesoji Aderemi was made the Governor
of Western Region by the Awolowo Administration cannot
undo the pristine history or invalidate the truth about the
Yoruba race.
History has acquainted us with copious facts that Ooni is
known to have been appointed by the Alaafin as the
custodian and keeper of the rituals and oratory of the gods
in Ile-Ife. The stool of Ooni was never known to be big on
hereditary kingship. Oonis have been the descendants of
Adimu the Olorisa, instead of being the direct descendants
of Oduduwa. The Alaafins of Oyo have been the paramount
kings and rulers of the Yorubas. Alaafin, in recognition of
his leadership, had intervened in numerous boundary
disputes involving the territories of the Ooni and Owa
Obokun of Ijeshaland
Some years back, when Oba of Benin visited Ile-Ife, the
comments made by Ooni Sijuade (I am happy to welcome
back my son and brother to the land of our ancestor,
Oduduwa) was quickly refuted by the Oba , through his
response:"who is the son of who?"
Moreover, The British as it was in their tradition recognized
lineage as meaning supremacy and legitimacy, preferring to
sign the Treaty of Cessation with the Alaafin as the Head of
the Yoruba Nation.
Also, on August 8th,1960, when Sir Adesoji Aderemi held
sway as the Ooni of Ife, Alaafin Bello Gbadegesin Ladigbolu
II was appointed the Chairman of the Council of Obas for
two years, Oba Adesoji never batted an eyelid. In 1962,
when Ooni had ceased to be Governor, he reverted to his
traditional stool and was attending the meetings of Obas
which had The Alaafin as the Chairman. When the first term
of Alaafin Gbadegesin expired, he was reappointed for
another two-year term. The Alaafin was reappointed for the
third time in 1965 until the military struck.
In 1966, Lt Colonel Adeyinka Adebayo made the Ooni
Chairman and the Alaafin his Deputy. Only the
Alaafin, among other Obas, protested the awkward
appointment and sought redress, as Alaafin does not play a
second fiddle to any Oba in Yorubaland. In 1976, the
military government had to reinstate the Alaafin as the
Chairman of the Council.
It is also a distortion to address the Ooni as "His Imperial
Majesty". This is another gaffe! Only the Alaafin is
addressed as His/Your Imperial Majesty. You cannot
assume the title when you have no empire you rule over.
Alaafin ruled over a vast empire (From Ilorin to Dahomey
and to some parts of Ghana; Ashanti) while Ooni did not
have that royal privilege. The Ooni is better addressed as
His/Your Royal Highness. This is history,my people!
The preeminence and supremacy of the Alaafin is obvious
from the above assertions and as deeply espoused in many
Yoruba books of history. We should not distort the history
by pitching the Alaafin against the Ooni. Oba Adeyeye
Ogunwusi made an unequivocal statement on his
coronation day that he was not into any supremacy contest
with the Alaafin. Therefore, Alaafin remains the undisputed
leader of all Yoruba monarchs.

Christian Yorubas are behind the plot to overthrow the Alaafin as the head of all Yorubas. Reason being that they would do such is because the Alaafin of Oyo is Muslim. This is the tic for tat game the European and Arab has firmly rooted in Africans, to fight and quarrel over their nonsense religions. I do understand that many Kings in Africa became Islamic to stop the advancement of Islam and to find alliance among the many African Islamic revolutionary Kings that were fighting colonization by Europeans and Arabs.

The Ooni, may he live forever, is only the chief of Ile Ife. This is what Baba Sango refers to Ooni as the chief because Baba Sango, the Alaafin of Oyo knows that the real owner of Ile Ife is Oba Frederick Obateru Akinruntan. That's right, Oba Frederick Obateru Akinruntan is the real Oba of Ile Ife. The Alaafin is the owner of Oyo Palace and head of all Yoruba towns. As history has it, when Oduduwa came and took over the whole area of Ile Ife and the surrounding towns they were eventually overcome by the Ogboni. It was an Yoruba queen Moremi who discovered the secret to the Ogboni. Basically the Yorubas were being terrorized by the cover activities of the Ogboni secret societies. The notion of them wearing masks is symbolic for the Yorubas not knowing who the members were by face and name. This type of community stalking or cult stalking is done all throughout the world in various cultures. Instead of a war between the two brothers, Obatala's people and Oduduwa's people all became Ogboni. Ogboni rules all of Yorubaland. Nobody messes with Ogboni and armed robber never visit their house. The Aje witches in Ogboni even frightens Ogboni members so they never betray. The only question is for Yorubas, are you loyal to the traditional societies of Africa, which is Ogboni, or will you be loyal to the Christian Freemasonry which seeks to destroy Nigerian traditional cultures, its Gods and sacred stools in the quest of Christian domination? Supporting the Ooni over the Alaafin is treachery! Ase.

AKYEMITE:
indeed you struggle to answer these questions. it is laughable that people can twist history to favour their point. 1.if your account is true and your alafin is so powerful as you claimed he should not have allowed the son of a slave of all people to take over his father's stool.
2. why would alafin be the only one out of oduduwa children and also a last born to dare challenge his fathers arrangement when others accept the authority of ooni.
3. why did that alafin bowed to take authority from ooni aderemi.
I asked those questions to appreciate your effort in answering the previous questions. as your account of ooni stool is only known to road side historians because it is full of contradictions and cannot stand the test of time. Let ife be it is a sacred land for all Yoruba and no amount of intimidation can change the truth. I am a pure Yoruba boy.
He bowed because the then Ooni was made Governor of Western Region by the British colonialists and it was a norm to bow and collect your certificate then. Ordinarilly this question doesn't prove superiority or inferiority in the right sense. It was courtesy of that era. Today that the Ooni is no longer governor or western Nigeria, can an Alafin bow to him. I really doubt

Re: Alafin's Supernatural Power Over Other Oba's In Yorubaland by lx3as(m): 6:55am On Jun 06, 2017
The question the OP or the writer should have asked himself was, how many Yoruba groups or states recognize Alaafin compare with that of Ooni's recognition? We are no longer in Oyo Empire and the people of Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun and Lagos have nothing or little to do with Oyo empire and they don't see Alaafin as head Oba in Yorubaland but the king of their Source, the Ooni of Ife!
However, both Alaafin and Ooni are the foremost rulers in Yorubaland. Oyo Empire was one of the greatest in Africa and Alaafin will always be held in high regard by all Yorubas home and diaspora, Alaafin even protected Ife during the empire greatness. Both Alaafin and Oba of Bini were born of great Uwa or Owa's blood of the Greater Oranmiyan who later came back to rule Ife in this present Ooni dynasties before his death. Every Ooni and virtually all Oba's have Oduduwa blood flowing in them, we should forget all these concocted stories.

How come you loyal Yorubas, who honor tradition, and are most noble, don't put these Yoruba traitors on blast. Those seeking to undermine Yoruba states anymore than they have been already by colonial invasion, slavery and Christianity. There's no logical debate for these traitors because by calling themselves, "Yoruba", means they are subjects of the Oba of Oyo. Yoruba means subject of the Oba of Oyo just like Nigeria means, "Niger Area". There are several Yoruba states historically, Oyo is the central state of an empire that contained other Yoruba states, Ile Ife is a town. Ile Ife is a town not a city and only a city can become a state.

In ancient times African royalty only married royalty so as to keep their blue blood untainted. Oraniyum married the princess of Tapa/Nupe and she became his first wife that gave birth to Ajaka and Sango, plus other children. As we know both Ajaka and Sango were Ibeji and both held the throne of Oyo as Alaafin. The Alaafin means owner of the palaace, so the palace guard were the police force and security of the state of Oyo. This security force could arrest anyone the Alaafin wanted arrested. Also the Alaafin had the responsiblity of protecting Ile Ife, the sacred city, by dispatching the palace guard and army of Oyo. Ile Ife had no palace and no palace guard. Ile Ife didn't get a palace until Oba Adeyemi I, the grand father of the current Alaafin, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyemi III, built the palace in Ile Ife. Oyo state surrounds Ile Ife so Ile Ife is not the center of Yoruba culture, Oyo is the center. Oyo is the center of Yoruba culture like Bejing was the capital of the China Empire, which also gave birth to all the culture of Korea, Vietnam and Japan. The current dialect of Yorubas comes from Oyo city dialect, the clothing, prayers, Orisha worship, and many cultural nuances of Yoruba people stem from Oyo city where sits the Alaafin and the Oyo Mesi and Oyo Mesa. Ase.

Besides the Alaafin the Ogboni are the real rulers of Oyo Empire including Ile Ife. Ase. Love, Sango.

Actually I'm more down to Earth and pragmatic than you will ever be. You are the one with Mars information done for ulterior motives. Simple treachery. Ile Ife is not a state, there is no Ile Ife Empire, no other Yoruba state, called Kingdoms, combined with Ile Ife to form an empire.

The Old Oyo was undoubtedly the greatest and most popular independent race in West Africa, indeed, Sub-Sahara. The Empire controlled many kingdoms in Yorubaland such as Sane, Owu, Egba, Ijesa, Ife, Ijebu etc. Again, I would to stress, Ile Ife is a town and has never ruled over other Yoruba states and kingdoms. Ile Ife is a sacred town and the worship of the Ooni is the worship of the Ooni ancestral chief priest who preserved and protected the town. The worship of the Ooni continues into the present life by worshiping the one sitting upon the stool by supposed destiny. The town of Ile Ife symbolizes the spot on Earth of Almighty Obatala's creation of the human race including the white race. Praise Almighty Obatala the elder brother of Oduduwa. Oduduwa is the great grand father of Sango who is the Alaafin. Sango worship is about the worship of the ancestral Alaafin's who kept sacred the stool of the Alaafin elder descendant of Oduduwa. Oyo's influence can't be underestimated, however Oyo didn't rule over Ijebu, Ife and Ijesa. Those kingdoms were independent. Not all Yoruba were under the direct control of Oyo.

You are a disgrace to my ancestors for inferring lies here about OONI's stool . I can't agree to the wickedness in your blood with this trash you churned out here this moment . No wonder, an oyo descendant mentioned here that he liked your opinion. And this because you have fed him with lies. Who told you that Obatala was the elder brother of Adimula? Who told you that Oyo control Ijebu? Who told Oyo control Ado Ewi? Who told you that Oyo control Owa Obokun axis ? THE PRINCE'S SWORD OF OYO,WHERE DID IT COME FROM? YOu better go and read the right books. Who told you that Oyo control Ekiti axis that spread into kwara? Who told you Oyo control ILE IFE? You really need to stop reading those books, else it will affect you seriously. I am so sick and tired of these shameful distortion by you and some other people on here. If you have no knowledge of a history ,why don't you just keep mute over it instead of these fake information.

Rev. Samuel Johnson,Olumide Lucas really did harm to you people's brain.

You know no Jack shit about my ancestors history.

I mock this baseless information

Again there is no Ile Ife empire never has been and never will be. There is only Oyo Empire, therefore only the Alaafin has ruled over the largest segment of Yorubas, all at sometimes, most at others and now less because of the fall of Oyo. Ase.

Mr oyo empire... your comments so far have shown that you are not widely read. Pls, when did oyo empire start? And I hope your answer will predate the reign of oduduwa in ile ife. Remember that oranmiyan founded oyo which means whatever civilization oyo had then was from ile ife because oranmiyan came from ile ife. History has never told me that any alafin ruled over this people viz: ife, ijebus, ijeshas etc. So, those cities, what do u call them? Not empires? But, have u ever thought the reason why oranmiyan left oyo even though he was ruling over oyos because history has it that, " oranmiyan said, a prince must not die outside his domain" (ori ade o gbodo sun ita). So, oyo was never home to oranmiyan?. The oranmiyan staff at ile ife presently testify to this fact which is left for anyone for further investigation in ile ife and if you have a contrary view to this, I challenge you to present your physical evidence like oranmiyan staff. Then we can talk. Peace

Alaafin Adeyemi succeeded Alaafin Ladigbolu in 1970. The Ooni was the governor between 1960 - 1962.
Maj. Gen Adeyinka Adebayo was the governor of the western region (1966 - 1971) when Alaafin Adeyemi was crowned.

All Alaafins are descendants of Oduduwa, Oraniyum and Sango by blood and spirit. Salute the great royal houses of Oyo. Ase. Love, Sango.

Obatala the elder brother of Oduduwa..what weed are you smoking bro... grin grin grin
And what the fuk is oraniyum grin grin grin. This is surely the effect of jamaican weed.

Ile ife blossomed for 100 of years as a city before the arrival of Oduduwa.. I don't see the point in educating you cos you sound like you are not yoruba and have zero clue about the culture..

Oyo never ruled over all Yoruba at sometimes like you mentioned. I can name many kingdoms that were never under Oyo.
Ife, Ondo, Ijesha, Akure, Ondo, Owo, Ijebu, Ugbo, Owe, Ikale, Mahin, Etc were never under Oyo.

Ife was not an empire, but a kingdom. Ife has always been the spiritual capital of Yoruba and Oyo had the political power. Both had their greatness.

ULE UFE which was the original name of the present day ILE IFE and she never claimed an empire. At no time did she claim it. However, Oyo thrived because of its location. I tell you of a truth that ILE IFE was the source of OyO ILE,so why this over ranting? . And ,OYO stood as a shield because of its location. I mock at this your egocentric opinion because OYO was never OyO until all the clans moved inn to make it stand. Fagbamila Orangun was the pioneer to stabilise the attacks from Nupe /Bariba etc when it was attacked.. Did you not read that from your history books? So forget this your storyline. All Yorubas made Oyo stood and it fell because of just ONE MAN called Oba Aoole, who wanted Afonja dead. This was the reason OYO fell. And don't even mention AFONJA because he became bittered based on his desire to become Alaafin, which was quashed. Thereafter he led a rebellion . Did such happened in ILE IFE? I am sure you know or have read about problems that happened when Oranmiyan came back because and thereafter nothing like that because IT CAN'T HAPPEN forever. OyO remained the pride of Yoruba in all ramification but don't over inform. And If all the able sons had not ran away which was due to the wickedness of OYOMESI, compelling AREMO to always die with his father, will OYO had been destroyed ? So, forget this your overzealousness on the information you spread on here . Go grab a copy from some of the well renowned historians to get informed. Even if some of their information are not all correct, still, certain information are near perfection.

What an exposure shocked
Honestly and seriously, 9jacrip needs to write an history book on Ife.

Yes oh! I believe 9jacrip is a trained historian. cool That bro's posts inspired me to go deeper into Yoruba history, formally. But he, like many others, absconded Nairaland soon after when Seun lost his mind and deputised his mad Ekiti protege Mynd44 grin to start coming down hard on those who question Seun's tactics! angry

Kudos to the many other valuable contributors on this thread and on other culturally significant threads too. smiley

Na oga Kats and dudu_negr dey get time before, but e be like say dem don retire from Nairaland. So i dey do my best small small. grin

Lol nice.
Those legends don try true true.

I taught Katsumoto and NegroNtns/Dudu_Negro everything they know. Ask them. Go on. tongue

Just incase you keep thinking Ife and her throne have lost relevance. Here's a picture of Onipopo of Popo leaving Republic of Benin (Dahomey) to see his 'Father' on his knees.

If a picture worths a thousand words, this one is yelling. cool
