‘I’m not a big fan of history’ – Baxter relaxed ahead of Nigeria clash

www.nairaland.com/attachments/5476052_stuartbaxter_jpega349921b8318db1b4ce4dd190c47f9e6

The 63-year-old is not bothered about his side’s previous results against the Super Eagles as he targets a positive outcome in Uyo

South Africa coach Stuart Baxter is less-concerned about his side’s past records against the Nigeria senior national team.

Bafana Bafana hold a poor record against the Super Eagles with five defeats. Their only victory against the three-time African champions was achieved during the Mandela Challenge in 2004.

Considering the uphill task his side face in their quest for a ticket to Cameroon 2019, the tactician is not moved by the past as he targets a good result at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

“The titanic sank a long time ago and Adolph Hitler is dead are both history. The Mandela challenge (where the South Africans have had their only win) is also history,'' Baxter told media.

''I am not a big fan of history but we are hoping that we are going to give a good account of ourselves since these Nigerian players are mostly new to the team.

“Nigerian team is a good team. Many nations in Africa have the same ambition of wanting to get their players play in big leagues and comeback and embellish the national team.

''This Nigerian team is a nice balance of youngsters who are hungry and good quality players plying their trade in good leagues.

''The Nigerian coach has been rebuilding because he is eager to get a balance squad and we are looking forward to the game.''

Online & TV – Time & Where To Watch Super Eagles Vs Bafana Bafana Clash

‎Coach of the senior national team of South Africa Stuart Baxter has explained the reason behind the axing of some players in the line up he released for the clash against South Africa.

Baxter starting line up caused stir in his homeland with most people questioning his decision to leave some players out in a clash viewed by many as very vital to their aspirations of qualifying for the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.

The coach who released the line up explained some decisions were injury enforced while some were made for the better of the team due to the strength of their opponent.

“I toyed around with the idea of picking Kermit Erasmus alongside Rantie, but he is injured and didn’t recover from that stomach bug (as well) before we left South Africa,” Baxter explained.

“I also thought about a three-man defensive midfield just to be a bit cautious, but I have gone with two in Bongani Zungu and Dean Furman.

“I have left Gabuza out of the side because of the way Nigeria plays.”

Tebogo Langerman

Mulomowandau Mathoho

Thulani Hlatshwayo (captain)

See Picture – Rohr Watches On As Alex Iwobi & Father Interact Before Eagles Last Training

Alex Iwobi and his father Chuka Iwobi caught the attention of Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent shortly before the Eagles left their hotel for their final training session.

Iwobi’s father usually follows him down to Nigeria whenever he is called up to the senior national team of Nigeria. A ritual that continued this time around with the Eagles in camp for Saturday’s clash against South Africa.

This time around Chuka Iwobi didn’t just had a chat with his son, he also spent little time with coach Gernot Rohr before the team departed for the stadium for their final session ahead today’s clash.

Exclusive – Late Change In Eagles Line Up , Ahmed Musa Dropped For Moses Simon

The coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has decided against fielding two players who are observing the Ramadan Fast on the same flank, and according to reports reaching Owngoalnigeria.com has decided to drop Ahmed Musa from his starting line up in favour of Moses Simon.

Rohr made the call to help the team maintain their energy level on the right flank as starting Musa on the right with Shehu Abdullahi as right back means playing two players who are observing the Ramadan fast on the same flank.

Gent Moses Simon will now play in a three man attack alongside Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi in a 4-3-3 formation.

Decision To Start Porto Awaziem Ahead Of Chelsea Omeruo In Eagles Starting XI Explained

As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com FC Po‎rto defender Chidozie Awaziem will start ahead of Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo in the heart of Nigeria’s defence alongside William Troost-Ekong.

Awaziem made his international debut for Nigeria against Togo last few days ago, but the 20 year old has gotten the nod to start ahead of Omeruo who has been a stalwart at the back for Nigeria since 2013.

Owngoalnigeria.com gathered the decision to start Awaziem was taken by Rohr in France as he did several drills with the defenders ahead of the South Africa game, Omeruo didn’t make it to their camp in France while Awaziem did.

The Porto man interpreted correctly the drills in the friendly game against Togo which Nigeria won 3- 0 , and during training in Uyo, he was once again at his best leaving the coach with no option than to hand him a start.

Furthermore Rohr believes South Africa forward Tokelo Rantie has a physiological edge over Omeruo after he literally destroyed the 24 year old few years ago in an AFCON qualifier at same venue.

Why Red Hot Ogu & Onyekuru Missed Out On Eagles Matchday List For SA Tie

Owngoalnigeria.com impeccable sources in the camp of the Super Eagles have revealed the reason why the duo of Henry Onyekuru and John Ogu missed out on the matchday squad for the South Africa tie.

Ogu was among the top performers for the team during training for the game while Onyekuru who finished as joint top scorer in Belgium with 24 goals was heavily tipped to make his debut as well.

However the duo were the shock omission from the matchday squad released by coach Gernot Rohr for the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers tie against South Africa in Uyo, and an explanation has been provided for their omission.

” Well for Ogu he will always be a part of the ‎team, he is a very good player, but missing out on the training tour of France opened the door for Mikel Agu to win the coach over.

” Agu had more time to impress Rohr, and also remember ‎the drills that were done for the game was held in France, Agu did well in interpreting the role in the friendly game against Togo which Ogu missed”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” As for Onyekuru, it was a straight fight between him and Olarewaju Kayode, and Kayode got the nod to start ahead of him due to his ability to track back and help in defence. Don’t forget he also did very well against Senegal.

” Onyekuru has done enough to earn another call up. The coach made it known that he has headache in picking his matchday squad, he wish he could have them all but he is only allowed to select 18 players”.
