@olaade714 ,I just want to call your attention to this ,I intentionally ignored your post .if you wanna oppose a notion do it freely without insulting . this person that I quoted, from his post i believe he is studying civil engineering and because of his experience he said civil engineering ought to b there, does he mean he's detesting civil engineering as a course? No!! . Do you know what ive gone through or experienced before I said what I said? No you don't ,so why quoting me wrongly or rather personally. I will still say this physiology and anayomy are big attractive courses but in dz Nigeria the chances of employment is slim that's just it .no offences to anyone ,dahz my own opinion .the choice is yours is agree or not .

I remember when i was doing my 1st degree in biochem, they were deceiving us that you can work ''anywhere''.

They would say 'you can work in research institution'. When nigerian government doesn't invest in research

'You can can work in laboratory'. For where?! When the med lab guys have colonized all biochemistry roles in the labs

'You can work as medical reps in pharmaceutical company'. This one is a grand deception, because you don't the knowledge of drugs to detail drugs to pharmacists, doctors etc, no good pharmaceutical coy will employ you because they know you don't have the required drug knowledge. Only some one man businesses that want to maximize profit may look your way because they can't afford a pharmacist, and trust me, the condition is always bad and most of such companies fail one the long run. You won't even enjoy it because your lack of drug knowledge will always make listening to you so boring when you are talking to the healthcare professionals.

Your best bet is lecturing.

Very unfortunate. The brightest people I have met have either biochem background or use biochem to do research. Whether they are now doctors, basic researchers or whatever. They also have won more Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology than almost all other backgrounds.

I would employ a biochemist sooner than any other person if I was an employer. From personal experience of school teachers back in Nigeria & medics/researchers in diaspora.

Trust your abilities. You will get there. Despite the difficulties of 9ja job market.
thanks

I'm sure you are still in school and has no idea of the state of things in the Nigerian labour market. FYI, i have a 2-1 in biochem and whatever i type here is based on personal experience. I know that biochem is a good research-oriented course that should propel one into making some ground breaking discoveries in science. But my dear, there is currently very little or no job prospects for biochemists in Nigeria.

When i finished my first degree, i spent over a year in the labour market, and almost on daily basis, i sent out applications for jobs. You will see adverts for ''medical reps'' and all that, but when you attend interviews you discover they are indians looking for cheap labour and you will be required to surrender your certificate to hawk some products for them.

The only job i managed to get was with one-man owned pharm company and the experience was hellish. All what i typed b4 were based on experience.

Incase you are still a student, my advice is to plan towards enrolling for masters immediately you graduate and serve, or if you know you don't have passion for lecturing, write JAMB now and enroll for a professional course, or you can go for DE when you graduate. Don't say you were not warned!

You now use yourself as a standard to judge Biochemistry? There are many Biochemistry graduates with mouth-watering salary in Nigerian Breweries Plc, Sabmiller Breweries, NNPC, Shell, NARICT, NILEST, IAR, All research Institutes in Nigeria, Monotechnics and Polytechnics (yes with B.Sc), Nestle Nigerian PLC, NAFDAC, Federal Ministry of health, Banks, Audit firms, UNICEF, WHO, among others.

The problem is that Nigeria produces more graduates than the labour market can absorb.

You better start networking and be patient too.

I know a graduate of Electrical Engineering who is yet to secure a good job for 3 years now and counting, does that means the course is not lucrative? He also graduated with a 2:1.

There are many graduates of medicine who are yet to secure a place for housemanship for 2 years let alone getting a job.

Like i said earlier the job opportunities for biochem are limited in nigeria. Find out the last time those organizations you mentioned employed biochemists. My dear, don't be deceived. Any ad you see that calls for biochemists, you always see microbiology, food science and tech, chemistry, ind chemistry, nutrition and dietetics etc. No specific ad for bch like you will see for professionals.

Since 2012 none of my former classmates has gotten anything better than teaching jobs in private sec schools where they are paid #10000-#15000. Is that one life?
Like i like said before, it seems you are still in school. By the time you graduate you will discover that the reality on ground is different from what you were told.
I have since gone back to school to do a professional course, and my dear, the difference is very clear

I graduated since 2012. STOP using yourself and your friends as a yardstick. I will still study Biochemistry over and over again.

I have told you to be patient and wait for your time and STOP thinking that your problem is biochemistry. Many graduates of medicine are yet to get job.

If you continue with this mindset, your situation will never change.

to get I.T placement is not easy for anybody. However as a civil engineering student, you have an edge. Go to ur school department of Works and tell them to find placement for you unless there're no construction going on in ur school.

You can use the opportunity to learn softwares like AutoCAD, Orion, staadpro e.t.c

After 5yrs, no good job and you think it is ok? Maybe it's okay for you as a lady, but a guy has to have something doing to be able to marry and raise a family.

As for me, i have since left biochemistry to study a professional course, and trust me, i can see a brighter future. It's good to study a course with a clearly defined career path.

I will never encourage anyone who doesn't have flair for teaching to study biochemistry in nigeria.

You actually think dt everybody that studied biochemistry is facing what you are facing. Only here in Kaduna state more than 50 biochemistry graduates have been gainfully employed in 3 years time. Imagine the number that will be employed in big cities all over Nigeria.

For your information, Breweries, Nestle, UAC, NAFDAC, NARICT, NABDA, UNICEF, WHO, IAR, to name but a few don't joke with Biochemists.

You simply went to school to get a degree without clear vision and plan of what to do with it.

For your information, no company designs a drug without a biochemist.

Are you sure you actually studied biochemistry?

I have told you time without number that every course of study (medicine inclusive) is suffering in Nigeria because we produce more graduates than we can absorb.

Nigerian Breweries wants to employ 3 Biochemists and 1500 of them will apply

University Teaching hospital wants 20 doctors and 500 will apply

Shell wants 3 petroleum engineers and 2500 will apply.

The same thing applies to other courses.

You have been stressing PROFESSIONAL COURSE. Who is a professional?

If you think a Biochemist is not a professional, then you should have your brain examined.

So much ignorance in your post my dear. If i may ask, where are you working? Lol @no company designs a drug without a biochemist. They are not even needed to design food supplement let alone drugs because pharmacists can do that with much more expertise. Stop looking at those biochemists that got employed in the 90s and early 2000s things av changed now. And yes, biochemists are not professionals because they don't have ethically defined jobs they are licensed to do [quote author=Onyiridike post=57635619]

Explain the role of enzymology, xenobiochemistry and analytical biochemistry in drug design.

What is bioethics and biosafety?

In fact state the principles of brewing and the unique role of biochemistry in quality control?

In fact which university trained you?

You don't deserve a certificate, to be honest.

Finally, I urge you to see things beyond your imagination and level of awareness, if not, you may end up exposing your own ignorance.

It is obvious why you are not employed. If you want to be enlightened ask humbly.

I am done with you.

You are not more enlightened than i am on biochemistry. Like i said earlier, i know that biochemistry is great research-based science, but the truth is that it works more in nations that value research. Unfortunately, nigeria is not one of such nations.

A biochemist is meant to be in research labs probing the chemical make up of all life forms with a view to improving the quality of life through publication of research findings that would guide those on the bench to work better.

Any biochemist you see working in other professions do that only when there no sufficient professionals to go round, and currently in nigeria everyone is jealously guarding their professions.

Let's tell ourselves the truth.

You have not yet answered my question on where you work yet you came here to deceive people on how they can work here and there in nigeria ?

The fact that you typed about enzymology, xeno and analytical bch as being enough to design drugs simply means you know only little on drug design. What do you know on pharmacology of drugs? Or you think that the little drug examples like paracetamol you were taught in xeno is all there is? Even enzymology didn't teach you much about drug metabolism i am sure. I wonder the kind of drugs you will design without a good knowledge of pharmacology and pharm. chemistry, and pharmacognosy.

Tell yourself d truth

I CAN RELATE THIS....

medsurg students do learn pathology...., it means they will know little on pathology... they won't come and replace medical laboratory scientist because they were taught pathology..

also

medical laboratory science students will learn pharmacology... to know little abt drugs... and not to replace pharmacists........

so make Una continue... the argument is interesting.
