Sunday was a relatively calm day in Lagos after Friday’s upheaval which meant that Arthur Ashe, Jeff Borowiak and Tom Okker with Donald Easum could go to the Brazilian ambassador’s residence to have lunch with Pele. Whereas the five American players staying with the elderly American couple had nothing to do. “They had this world professional dart board and darts and we were bored. There were these huge lizards running around the property,” Erik Van Dillen said. “We decided to go on a big safari hunt and see if we can get them. We weren’t very politically correct at the time.” The lizards were too quick for the players despite their best efforts. “So Eddie Dibbs is going one way and I am going another and he throws a dart which ricochets off the cement floor and sticks right into my leg. The 18-man WCT contingent comprising of 14 players, 2 WCT officials and 2 English journalists departed from their Ikoyi rendezvous point in a convoy of cars in the early hours of Tuesday, February 17, for Lagos International Airport. The Federal Military Government provided an armed police escort to the airport. This ensured that the vehicles were able to pass through the roadblocks that dotted the city. The Government also kept its word by providing an airplane and lifting it’s imposed flight restrictions to let the tennis contingent leave Lagos airspace. They were the first foreigners allowed to leave the country after the attempted coup. The local Pepsi-Cola Manager approached Donald Easum the day before to enquire about Pele and his entourage traveling with the WCT contingent but official government permission couldn’t be secured in time for this to happen. There was a large military presence at the airport to prevent fugitives like Dimka from leaving the country. The plane departed at 7.00am in order to catch the AZ 837 Alitalia plane which left Accra at 8.15am and arrived in Rome at 2.35pm. There was an eruption of cheers by the players as the aircraft took off from the Lagos International Airport runaway. They were relieved that their ordeal was finally over.

“It was an unfortunate incident”, Harold Solomon recalled. “We were going down to have a major tournament in a developing African country and it was a case of bad timing that we were there when they had an unfortunate coup de’tat.”

The Rome WCT tournament was delayed by a day to accommodate the late arrival of the players. Arthur Ashe went on to win this tournament. Pele eventually left Lagos when the Federal Military Government re-opened the borders and airports a few days later. The Brazilian ambassador insisted that he wore an aviator’s uniform to conceal his identity. The greatest danger that Pele faced throughout his time in Lagos was to lose money during games of gin rummy in the Federal Palace hotel.

The only available opportunity to do this was at the Caracas WCT Open. On April 1, in the middle of the Caracas tournament, Arthur Ashe completed his unfinished semifinal match against Borowiak by beating him. The following day, April 2, he faced Stockton in the final and lost to him. The match was over in less than an hour and it was Stockton’s first ever victory against Ashe. The score was 6-3, 6-2. The WCT never held another tennis tournament in Nigeria. The Lagos International Airport was renamed ‘Murtala Mohammed International Airport’ a few days after his assassination. Dimka was on the run for three weeks after the coup attempt before his eventual capture on March 5. He was executed on May 15, 1976. There was never an official Government explanation for the military interruption of the Ashe vs Borowiak semi-final match.

This longform story is based on archival newspaper research, biographical accounts of key characters, US Embassy/State Department cables plus telephone interviews with Tom Okker, Stan Smith, Harold Solomon, Dick Stockton, Bob Lutz, John McDonald, Ismail El Shafei, Paul Svehlik, and Erik Van Dillen.

I will not deny the fact that some of the things you listed here are not found in Nigeria, however we are beginning to develop all these things.

The national housing mortgage system is now being introduced into Nigeria where you can own a good and comfortable house for a very small amount of money from the begining (for just about 100 dollars).

Feeding primary school students has been launched and kicked off in some Nigerian states.

Our government schools which are also scott- free to SS3 (12th grade) have also seen drastic improvement in most states.
Our university tuition is also as good as free, i paid only 50 dollars per session in my university! And upon that, i received annual bursary payments! Most Nigerian students are embursed annually.

Nigerians are not taxed heavily like most other countries like yours where people are even taxed for the air they breathe, this to a large extent has made our cost of living very very cheap compared to other african countries.

Iwill look for the picture of my family house in a northern Nigerian village for you and you will see that the road at the front of the house is tarred. Many Nigerian villages and towns have tarred roads, but i won't argue the fact that many more are not tarred.

The decades of military rule in Nigeria destroyed the progress of Nigeria and set us decades backwards in development and this is why we are where we are today. However, since the return of democracy, a lot of improvements have been recorded and many more are on track!
You can see the new world class cities and islands being built in Nigeria from the scratch! This is to tell you we are not joking! We are working very hard to recover from the wasted and destroyed years of the military era. This is why we do not have the time or like to engage in flexing muscles with other countries. You guys are the ones always interested in muscle flexing!
You fools keep acting as if your country is paradise when there are also enough problems in your country for Africa!

The prevailing perception in Nigeria's foreign policy was that, as predominant the African leader, it should play a bigbrother role in relations with African states. Nigeria was a founding member of the OAU and often channeled major policy initiatives through that organization. Most of its relations with other African states took place outside the OAU framework but were guided by OAU principles. Nigeria's primary African commitment was to liberate the continent from the last vestiges of colonialism and to eradicate apartheid in South Africa. Promoting liberation had grown from a weak and conservative stance during the 1960s to an increasingly firm push after the civil war. India’s Scientists Are Making a Mark in These Six Global Mega Science Projects

1. LIGO – Gravitational Wave Analysis

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by violent and energetic processes in the universe. LIGO or Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory is a large-scale physics experiment that detects cosmic gravitational waves and develops them as an astronomical tool.

There are two LIGO observatories in USA (at Livingston and Richland) that are operated by Caltech and MIT. The Indian team in the global LIGO collaboration, which is involved in analysing the data collected by LIGO observatories, has 60 members.

Work has also begun on building a LIGO observatory in India which will be called INDIGO. It will be the fifth in the world, after the ones being built in Japan and Italy. INDIGO will be an international collaboration between the US LIGO Labs and three leading Indian institutions – Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), and Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT).


2. LHC – The God Particle

There is an intrinsic Indian connection to the discovery of Higgs Boson at CERN – Satyendra Nath Bose, the Indian scientist after whom the sub-atomic particle is named. Over the years, CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, has seen Indian scientists make quite a mark with their work.

Indian scientists have helped build the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest single machine and the most powerful particle collider in the world. They are also collaborating on two significant CERN experiments, CMS and ALICE. CMS is one of the two experiments that discovered the Higgs Boson (also called God Particle) and ALICE studies matter under extreme conditions of density and temperature that may have existed at the birth of the universe.

India is also poised to become an associate member of CERN by the end of 2016, which would entitle it to attend even the restricted sessions of the organization.


3. Thirty Metre Telescope – World’s Most Advanced Telescope

The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be the world’s most advanced and capable ground-based telescope. At the heart of the telescope will be a mirror made up of 492 individual segments. Precisely aligned, these segments will work together as a single reflective surface with a diameter of 30 metres.

The TMT project is an international partnership between CalTech, Universities of California, Canada, Japan, China and India. The telescope was initially supposed to come up in Hawaii but had to be stopped due to local protests. Hanle in Ladakh was then proposed as one of the alternative sites, the others being in Chile.

The TMT- India project will propel India into a special league of deep space research. The main Indian institutes working on this unique project are Aryabhatta Research Institute for Observational Sciences (ARIES), the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), and the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).


4. ITER – Fusion Energy

ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is an experimental nuclear fusion reactor that is being built at Cadarache in the south of France. It’s the core of a nuclear fusion research megaproject that will also be the world’s largest plasma physics experiment.

The ITER project aims to make the long-awaited transition from experimental plasma physics to full-scale electricity-producing fusion power stations. The ITER station is expected to produce at least ten times more energy than the energy that will be required to operate it.

The project is funded and run by seven member entities—the European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, and the United States who will mostly contribute in the form of components. In India, the Ahmedabad-based Institute for Plasma Research is contributing towards the building of the tokamak reactor’s gigantic cryostat.



5. FAIR – Antiproton and Ion Research

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an international accelerator facility that will be used to study the building blocks of the universe. Situated in Darmstadt in Germany, FAIR will use intense beams of antiprotons and ions for research in the fields of nuclear, particle, plasma and anti-matter physics.

Besides exploring the fundamental aspects of physics, the project will look into the evolution of the universe. The project will also explore and study applications of its research in biology and bio-medical sciences.

In India, the project is being co-ordinated by the Indo-FAIR Coordination Centre (IFCC) at Bose Institute, Kolkata and being jointly implemented by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy. Several Indian industries are also involved in building advanced equipment for the FAIR accelerator.


6. SKA – World’s Largest Radio Telescope

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project is an international effort to build the world’s largest radio telescope that is currently scheduled for completion in 2024. With an unprecedented large collecting area of over a square kilometre, the SKA will be 50 times more sensitive and 10,000 times faster than any imaging radio telescope array previously built.

While India has been involved with the project since its earliest days, the Indian Government formally joined the SKA project as a member in 2015. At present, Indian scientists are leading the design team for the Telescope Manager, the brain and nervous system that will control the entire SKA observatory.

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR) in Pune is the nodal institute for overseeing SKA related activities within India. Recently, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) located near Pune has been granted SKA Pathfinder status. Pathfinders are telescopes around the globe that give valuable feedback to the designing teams of SKA.

Actually the donation by students and poor people was true, my parents cannot lie, they would tell you that. The article l showed you also confirmed this, such that hundreds of southafrican citizens were granted free education here.
This is not to say that you owe us anything, or that you couldn't have done same, nor that we contributed alone BUT to set the records straight, and let you know that the west wasn't really interested in combating this like all of Africa.

Bengaluru based Team Indus, one of the five finalists selected in the Google Xprize Lunar competition, is in the final stages of preparation for the launch of its spacecraft that will carry two rovers and a bunch of scientific experiments to the surface of the moon. The spacecraft will be launched aboard ISRO's PSLV rocket on 28 December. If all goes according to plan, the rover will land on the moon on 26 January.

The startup is already looking beyond the lunar launch, focusing on building small-sized satellites in the future. Having built the moon spacecraft, it is confident of building launch platforms in the future as well.

"We see this competition as a test for ourselves," co-founder Rahul Narayan told HuffPost India. "Once we go through this experience we will be able to reach out to other customers and organizations as well. We can share our knowledge in specific areas of spacecraft building too."

The fledgeling Team Indus will tie up with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) with the aim of hoisting India’s flag through an unmanned spacecraft on the lunar surface on January 26, 2018, the 69th Republic Day. Team Indus is a group of youngsters who are hedging their bets on winning the $20 million Google Lunar X Prize. Team Indus comprises about 100 people mostly engineers and are led by a visionary Rahul Narayan who in his earlier avatar was a software worker and calls himself a serial entrepreneur but who in 2010, when the Google Prize Lunar X Prize was almost closing, decided to take a shot at the moon.

As off now, one Israeli team and two American teams have procured launch contracts and are close contenders for the prize. Towards what Team Indus calls ‘Har Indian Ka Moonshot’ in the next 12 months it has to build from scratch a satellite that will lift off from India’s space port Sriharikota atop riding on the PSLV, the same then has to make a soft landing on the moon and then a rover will have to slip out.

To finally win the prize the rules stipulate that the rover has to move 500 m on the lunar surface and should be able to beam back high definition images back to earth. Team Indus claims they are now among the top four contenders for the prize and they already bagged USD 1 million milestone prize from Google. This has buoyed their spirits and today among the half a dozen other serious contenders only Team Indus has a “verified contract” to launch on a highly reliable globally acclaimed rocket.
