No matter how well the govt tries, there will always be people complaining, and this is not unique to Kenya. These types of people want roads, ports, more power, railways etc but they dont want to hear about debts. What? The same people know that our economy is not powered by underground mineral resources like oil or gold. We generate revenue from services and agriculture. Its inexorable that we have to borrow to expand our infrastructure because our revenue sources arent as big. The debt ratio which currently stands at 52 % of GDP is also not a thing to worry serious economists, of which the CS's of Industry and Finance are. Just to give you an idea of where we are, the UK has a debt to gdp ratio of 92.2 %, France 96.5 %, Canada 98.8 %, Cyprus 104.6 %, Belgium 106.7 %, Singapore 110.5 %, Cape Verde 116.8 %, Portugal 126.2 %, Italy 132.5 % and Japan 234.7 %. That is even without mentioning the likes of Greece, Spain and Brazil who are or have been in some serious jeopardy lately. Those of you who have businesses know just how important borrowing loans is to growth. What should concern everyone is whether the debt is sustainable. Not that it is 50 %. Japan has such a huge loan and they're still borrowing because they know they can pay back. Meanwhile, they are using their money to expand their already sophisticated economy by any standards. Kenya has never been at risk of not paying back its debtors, not even now. We will soon be exporting oil and paying back the debts will only be smoother. I am not insinuating we should borrow more because we have oil now, no! But with oil we will have a deeper source of revenue. Imo, the subsequent governments should use oil to grow the infrastructure countrywide. The Dubai model is an excellent one. If they do so, we will shift from where we are now to something close to them in a very few short years, corruption notwithstanding. Its when the huge projects that are being undertaken start paying dividends, which might take some time, that many will realize the benefit of borrowing to expand your infrastructure. The issue is not whether you are borrowing, but whether you have the capacity to pay back.

Yup,your'e very right .Its mind boggling that some folks choose to ignore certain facts when it doesn't suit their skewed political narrative .Trying to argue that far more companies have set up shop than the few that've left isn't popular here.Lack of unga is a very big factor but somehow greater regional drought is not.Debt is a big concern but lets not notice the new railway and the bunch of roads built ,power plants expanded and the stable power supply gained ...its all really illogical and nauseating.

I'm a business minded person and i'd really love to see this upward trend kept up and the pace even speeded up and whatever is politically convenient for some should come 2nd .Heck i'm proud of the vast improvement in the ease of doing business ranking achieved by this administration (3rd most improved in the world) Also check out the 2017 Global Innovation Index rankings that came out in March 2017 where Kenya came 3rd in SSA thanks to the momentum of the current govt.

UN Habitat can give us more information about slums in both countries. Kenya is far ahead in that aspect and please stop dragging us back.

Correction: there are no slums in Johannesburg inner city or cbd. Unless we are talking about hillbrow . To find a slum in the city of Johannesburg you have to drive a long distance. So in your threat I hope you take that into consideration. Cbd lagos vs cbd jhb. Or slum jhb vs slum lagos not cbd in another city vs slum in another .

Nope. Slums in Nairobi comprise only 6% of the total Nairobi area.
