Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by funstufz(m): 11:33pm On Jul 21, 2017 |

funstufz: Go to IITA. Premier doesn't do cassava stems while IITA does both. They should be able to give you contacts for farmers; I know they do for cassava. |

Is your seed planter the usual one attached to a tractor or yours is different? Pls elaborate even with picture if you wouldn't mind...thanks a lot. Have about 20hecters of maize farm and actually spent above 160k for planting it.... Seed planter would have bin oreverable cause I still pay for replanting even after germination.... stagger: |

bingocalous: Hello, you can check my thread for maize planter. https://www.nairaland.com/3953120/maize-planter-fertiliser-applicator Thanks |
Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by stagger: 6:50pm On Aug 03, 2017 |
bingocalous: It's hand held, just like the one Phemmy is advertising. His own is actually more advanced as it can deliver fertilizer during the same planting operation. |
I just got the following: - 20kg of Oba98 at N375 per kilo from Premier Seeds: (7,500) - Leased 1 hectare of land: 10,500 - land clearing: 20,000 (opted for manual clearing to preserve the top soil. I also want to plough in the stump remnants into the soil) - 3 litres of Paraquat @ 1,600 each: 4,800 - 3 kg of Atrazine Powder @ 2,300 each: 6,900 - Sprayer will spray the herbicides at 10,500 for the entire hectare. - Seed planter from China: 50,000 (could have been cheaper but I used express shipping). I plan to hire 1 person to plant the whole hectare in one day @ 5,000 max. I want to get the spacing spot on and reduce labour costs. - Tractor hiring for tilling and harrowing: not yet negotiated. some question bro, paraquat and atrazine powder are herbecides and insecticide respectively right? 2ndly harrowing and tilling what is their function? |
Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by stagger: 11:52pm On Aug 03, 2017 |

Paraquat and Atrazine are both herbicides. However I must say that they do not last the whole season, because I am on the verge of having to use a selective herbicide to spray again. As per tractor work, there is: - ploughing: initial tilling by tractor - harrowing: splinters the ploughed soil further - ridging: separates the soil into ridges for planting. 1 Like |

Seun:I do not know about Oba super 2 and Oba98 but I know that Sammaz 37 has intermediate maturity and is resistant to drought and striga. |

Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by TokyoBulls(m): 8:44am On Aug 06, 2017 |
There are many hybrid seeds in Nigeria that are better than Premier Seeds' Oba 2, Super 6 and 98. I think the best seed is Seedco's SC 727 and SC 719 (yield potential of 14 tonnes per hectare), Mosanto's DK 920 (potential yield of 10 tonnes per hectare) and Dupont's Pioneer Sees (potential yield of 8 to 12 tonnes per hectare). PLEASE note: Yield potential and actual yield are ALWAYS different. Seun: 1 Like |

For maize, 3 Maize Force by Jubaili did great for me as a pre emergence herbicide. I currently don't use any post emergence. hadex90: |

For farmers planting late season maize, please study the rainfall patter in your area before planting and choose the right seeds to plant. Early maturity varieties may be needed if rainfall stops early in your zone. Agro Services in Osiele, Abeokuta is selling NPK 20.10.10 at N5,500 vs N8,000 from dealers. 1 Like |

Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by TokyoBulls(m): 5:56pm On Aug 08, 2017 |
Most Agric shops that sell Jubaili products sell 3 Maize Force. What location are you in perhaps I know suppliers around? ozoneamani02: |
Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by TokyoBulls(m): 5:58pm On Aug 08, 2017 |
Striker is selective. Atrazine is not. Generally, the word 'selective' is dangerous. Be careful what you spray once crop germinates. My neighbour lost his 100-acre maize this year to 'selective' herbicides. hadex90: |

pls something is attacking my maize, I mean the leaves. This thing is just eating up the leaves.& its really spreading through whats the best thing to do to cure this infection? 2, Rodents are cutting down the maize from the stem near the root. This rodents are really destructive. They do suck the liquid at the stem base of the plant, and so the entire plant is rendered useless. Pls anyone with a perfect solution to this. Mind you, I fence it round with bamboo and mosquito net, block all holes used as hiding place for this rodent but some are still troubling the plant Your advise is really welcome pls |
