Integrityfarms: Yes sir. That's more elaborate. It considers some other factors that webometrics does not. It does not however invalidate webometrics because it also uses the same webometrics indices in addition to teaching, international outlook, etc. Not every uni is considered for ranking by THE as there are minimum criteria to meet in order to be even included in their database, to make you qualified to be considered for ranking. As it stands now, only the first three universities on this list are listed in the THE database! 2 Likes |

It's a shame that many Nigerians accept whatever is thrown at them without doing a personal check! Quote me, Webometrics is not recognised outside Nigeria, and by extension, Africa. The chief reason for this is that the ranking system does not fit into the most advanced thinking on University ranking methodology. Specifically, the ranking is mainly based on University 'presence' on the internet-hence the name-'WEBometrics'. In fact, there's a caveat on Webometrics' website that: "It does not measure, compare, or quantify design layout or popularity but rather uses presence, access, and visibility as the key indicators of quality and performance in the higher education sector." Little wonder therefore that the 2017 Webometric ranking of World Universities goes thus: 1. Harvard University 2. Stanford University 3. MIT 4. University of California Berkeley 5. University of Michigan 6. University of Washington My point: Yale University, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton and Columbia are ranked 13, 7, 10, 23 and 27 respectively! The only ranking methodology that can lead to such conclusion is WEBOMETRICS! Accordingly, the only place UNN & Covenant can be rated above OAU, Ile-Ife; and FUTMINNA rated above UNILAG & ILORIN is Webometrics! The QS World ranking of Universities, Academic ranking of World Universities and the Times are the rankings that are respected all over the world. Unfortunately, apart from UI that is recognised by the Times, no other Nigerian University is recognised by these reputable organisations. So, stop falling over yourselves-Webometrics has little or no practical utility! 7 Likes |

TheVictorious:Yes! I saw this ranking yesterday and I was disappointed CU had regressed on global rankings. But then it's not an issue. Webometrics leaves small universities at a huge disadvantage. That CU even makes top 10 is even amazing. This is what happens when u directly compare research output without due consideration for size, hence you see a university like Caltech which has been ranked No 1 for 6 yrs in a row under times higher education being ranked at 40 under this current webometric ranking. The system of webometrics would reward a UI with 5000 lecturers who produced 2000 papers(40% research active) more than a CU which has 2000 lecturers but produced 1000 papers(50% research active). This kind of anomalies have been corrected on Times Higher. You also made an important point on the years in consideration. I expected 2011-2015 to be used. The rankings also give huge advantages to universities that offer medicine law agriculture etc because there are more citations in those disciplines. To counter this Times higher deliberately normalized the indicators for such heavily cited disciplines so that universities which focus on the liberal arts with less citations can be compared fairly. All in all we would be waiting for UI on times higher this year. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Pedagogue:Yes you're right that webometrics is not ideal for ranking. But Times Higher Education ranking contains THREE Nigerian universities in it's ranks, in the order: 1. University of Ibadan. 2. Covenant University. 3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Note: Only UI is actually included in their ranks of top 981 universities. Covenant and UNN are under consideration. I'll check the others. https://www.timeshighereducation.com/student/where-to-study/study-in-nigeria 1 Like |

TheVictorious I assure you that a comparism between UI and Covenant would really show the strength of CU. CU might even gap UI with nothing less than 200 universities. 1 Like 1 Share |
