Work Still on the BurgerKing job, a lot has been happening. I must have mentioned it earlier that sometime ago, my hours were reduced to like 9hrs/week. Lemme give you a run down of how the hourly schedule thingy works, each employee has a 40hr maximum number of hrs to work every week, anything above that is considered "overtime" and you are paid extra for those hours that exceed the 40hrs. The extra cash you are paid is 1 and half x your normal pay. [for reference: https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/workhours/overtime] SO because of my (lack of) speed, the main manager reduced my hours from around 36-38hrs/week to just 6-9hrs/week, I was somewhat dissapointed though, but I kept coming to work and doing my job. This went on for some weeks and I reduced my availability to just night shifts and weekends. One thing led to another, and people were getting fired anyhow, thus, I started getting more hours and my speed increased gradually. I "think" I got onto the good books of the main manager because, on countless occasions, when people "called off" (called in and said they cannot come to work), and I was called to come in to work, I always showed up. Over the course of time, I developed an "understanding with the main manager, somehow, she understood the fact that I'm just here to work and get paid, nothing more. I feel that was the reason why she instructed the shift manager to apologize to me over the incident the other day. Slowly but surely, my coworkers began to understand my kind of person and began to give me my respect. So, here comes a new shift manager, white guy, 40-something year old marijuana addict. I had worked with him a few times without any incidences, so he was cool (or so I thought). 32 Likes |

One Sunday morning, I came in to work at 8:00am (my shift was supposed to end at 4:00pm), I was working in the kitchen with one other lady whose shift ends at 2:00pm. The shift was really hectic and we barely handled it. At around 1:30 pm, other people started coming in to work, I was relieved that at least, some help had arrived. Well, I was wrong, the new shift began with other persons relieving those that work in front (not in the kitchen). Thus, I was left alone, just me in the whole kitchen, with 6 or 7 akatas in front. it was cool until we had a rush, some church around the neighborhood had closed, so they drove straight to order some food. Lots of cars, lots of orders, just me in the kitchen. I had to send the meat in the broiler, send fries in the groundnut oil (they call it grease here ) and still rush to make the burgers on time, only me. I increasingly became irritated and annoyed. The manager could have easily instructed someone to come help me out in the kitchen, but he didnt. They were just upfront, gisting, laughing and I was here working my butt off. The straw that broke the camel's back was when he (the manager) shouted at me that I didnt make a sandwich well, I shouted back at him, that I made it well, it led to a highly heated exchange of words which ended with me totally losing my cool. He came back to the kitchen and threatened to fire me, I told him to his face "well, fire me, I do not give a fvck". The episode ended with me being sent home by 3:56 (four minutes to the end of my shift) While I was walking outta the store, I could feel the eyes of my coworkers, "Obi could do that?" they thought ====================================================================================== I was off work the next day, I had typed, signed and sealed my resignation letter and put it in my bag on my way to my other job, with the aim of submitting it when I close work. Only for me to receive a call from the main manager, telling me to come over so we would all "talk". The "talk" ended with both of us shaking hands, and him tearing up the report he had written about me. Over the next few days, my coworkers were shocked as to why I had not lost my job after that episode... Let them keep wondering, ndi ara. 71 Likes 3 Shares |

Some days back, I drove a GMC for the first time. I had to take my client to a doctor's appointment and we opted to use his car instead, cool ride, automatic everything, but I still prefer my Mum's highlander There was some festival going on in Chicago at the moment, so there's lots of traffic. 18 Likes

Honestly, some of these buildings are so big, you'd wonder how they were built, and why we haven't reached this level, religion? 26 Likes 2 Shares

Mr J (my client) is always eager to show me spots he used to hang around and do stuff when he was younger, spots he picked up girls, spots he did silly stuff etc etc. On one occassion, we drove almost 30 mins to a butcher shop located around downtown chicago. The place has been standing for hundreds of years. Somehow reminds me of Slaughter market, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. 16 Likes

I remembered my childhood yrs. There are times when we see some "foreign houses" in the village then. The story that follow such houses were thst the owners live abroad. So they want a "feel" of the abroad in their hometown, they will build massive abroad house in the village. Now, our politicians go to abroad on working visits, holidays etc. Does it mean that they don't see any good thing to replicate in nigeria? I'm yet to see any nigerian road like this. Is the country cursed or what? I don't know why I'm ranting anyway. Frank, I love ur thread and ur humility. U might not know it yet but u don't have puffed up pride in u at all. I'm sure that's why u still see people expecting more from u always. Keep it up. U will go places and shake worthy and important hands the way I'm seeing u Kudos 37 Likes |

This one, you put gloves on, pick the meat you want, put it in a plastic bag and weigh it to know the price, there was a lot of crowd there. I guess the meat is really fresh. **few more pictures of the place 12 Likes

Ha!... Burger King new king!...." so you come from ehmmm..... Africa and don't want to work lIke a slave?..nor be treated as a slave?...who do you think you are?...Kunta Kinte? "...guess that's what the supervisor was thinking! In the South...Whites are not used to Blacks talking back... and you from Africa...make it even more disrespectful! The Akatas in the South were trained not to talk back... to be like submissive in order to keep a job.... so they are shocked you weren't fired. But again.... two things are sooo important in keeping a job.... being good at what you do...and more important. .. being reliable. You have both and it wouldn't be easy for the manager to let you go. If you let her know you are leaving for another job to get more pay... she'll immediately increase your pay! @ pics.... the one over the roadway...is that a parking garage? 23 Likes |

In a thinking mood... *God himself must be living in America, for that country to be blessed this much. Moreover, they must have understood and is applying God's principles better than Nigerians. *I'm beginning to be convinced that it was in Africa, perhaps in Naija, that the devil and his cohorts landed in, when they were overthrown from heaven. This is evidence in the level her deterioration in all ramifications. Well, I'll never blame God for creating me a Nigerian, since he's an all knowing God, if not.... * Indeed, to those who has made better use of what they have/were given to, more will be given to them. I can't wait for the day I'll sleep, only to wake up and find out that I'm still in America live! and not in a dream. I'm not desperate though... just that this dungeon called Naija, don tire me. May God continue to be blessing America nd Americans for putting to good use what they have. 23 Likes 4 Shares |
