Hello House, I am experimenting with farming this season. I am practicing mixed cropping on a plot of land and I have been using non selective the chemicals for weed control until someone recommended Astracine for my farm with cassava, Yam, maize.....i mixed a peak milk tin measure with 16 litres water and sprayed on a section of the farm but when I visited the farm, the weed has taken over... ... Meaning Astracine wasn't effective. I went back to the 'recommender' and he suggested I should add a little 24d (measure - the cap) to the Astracine and water to get the right effect...... Pls what is your opinion on this? |

cooldipo: From what I know, atrazine is effective against weed seeds and seedlings.I.e it kills small weed seedlings and prevents their seeds from sprouting. If you want to spray an overgrowing field mix the attrazine with glyphosate.Try to keep the mixture agitated,or better yet spray glphosate first then after the weed go down spray atrazine to prevent germination of weed seeds. 1 Like |

Really sorry about this, The first case as described is ARMY WORM ATTACK, really destructive to maize. Buy Army Force (N500 per small bottle and each bottle is enough for 2 16-ltr Knapsack Sprayer) or Ampligo (each sachet is N1,300 and it's administered one sachet to one sprayer). Obviously, Ampligo is more expensive but much stronger. Ampligo can stay for up to 29 days and will even prevent army worms from another farm coming in. Second issue, you have a couple of options. Ensure the farm is clean and weeds are not growing especially in around the perimeters of your farm. Second, you can set traps and get some bush meat. Overall, protect your crops. That's your investment peacemara54: |

If your farm is not 'big', manual weeding is the solution. Spraying a farm with grown crops takes some expertise which most farmers don't have 1 Like |

TokyoBulls: Thanks, am really grateful. I wish I could have your response b4 now. I used kerosene & really effective destroys the army worms & the egg but didn't knw it will affect the plant. Am grateful I applied it to few affected Am grateful for you advise ..thanks |

dragon2: Why do you give such advise without specifying if this spraying should be done before or after planting? Glyphosate is non-selective and will cut down both crop and weeds! 1 Like |

Penkelemess: Apologies, but yield/potential for Oba Super 98 is 7-8 tons according to the suppliers. Could you please kindly let us know how how you got your results? Thanks |
Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by dragon2(m): 5:18pm On Aug 14, 2017 |
stagger: If the farm is properly marked out someone experienced with spraying glyphosate can control the weed.If and a big if,the cassava and yam is mature and the glyphosate concentration is correct he can't kill it,esp if the leaves of both the mature cassava and yam are about 3 feet above the grass. If they are still very young he can't.However,I repeat, good marking of a farm is Paramount when using chemicals in farming. |

dragon2: I will be going to my farm tomorrow. I wish I can snap a picture of a neighbouring maize farm to show you the exact effect of attempting to use glyphosate post-emergence. You keep mentioning someone experienced. Is it villagers who have no financial stake in your farm (and are more interested in the number of knapsacks they will spray to collect maximum money for the day) that will take the time to keep the spray nozzle as close to the ground as possible, avoiding the maize plant? Good luck with that. 1 Like |

Re: Maize Farmers Come In Here by stagger: 1:38pm On Aug 16, 2017 |
Yes, as promised, I went to my farm area and took some pics to display the effect of using a non-selctive herbicide. A nearby farm was sprayed with non-selective herbicides, and the wind blew the mist towards some maize plants. You can see the places where contact was made with the maize leaves by the herbicides, and other maize plants that were not affected. This incident occurred due to the carelessness of the villagers doing the spraying. So to my friend who insists on using non-selective herbicides and talking about care being taken in directing the nozzle away from the maize, I say that no hired hand (who has no financial stake in your farm project) will ever exhibit the level of care required to ensure that your maize is untouched by a non-selective herbicide. The consequences could be devastating. 4 Likes

Non selective. Spray on the same day or second day or at worst within 3 days. Immediately the maize starts coming out, you can't spray any longer. adescopy: |
