Jadesola Adedeji is a British-trained pharmacist. After working for SmithKline Beecham Plc as well as GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) both in Nigeria and the UK, she relocated to Canada for a few years, where she set up her own pharmacy outlet in conjunction with a friend. Her outlet which was known as The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, grew quickly and was a hit with family and friends in Canada. After a while, her husband chose to move back to Nigeria, so she sold the business for a healthy profit, and came back home.

The thought of going back into pharmacy did not seem too appealing, so she looked for other options. She found out that an American company called Brickz for Kidz wanted to set up shop in West Africa. They found a willing partner in Jade Adedeji, and she was promptly given the Nigerian franchise. Today, Jade runs Brickz for Kidz, an after-school programme that takes learning beyond the classroom, and allows kids to broaden their education in a non-traditional setting. They teach subjects like Robotics and Advanced Robotics classes! Kids learn how to build a motorized model, and watch it come to life using simple LEGO® WeDo® software.

Once their skills improve, the children are encouraged to advance to LEGO® EV3 Mindstorms® classes for more challenging robot-building and programming! Now, Jade Adedeji has switched careers to become a technology coach.

Her company started the programme in January 2014 with about 5 schools, but today 12 schools have signed up for the programme. About 700 children attend the after-school programme, and the holiday camps they run. This is a hands-on class where students build machines, buildings, vehicles and other structures out of LEGO bricks, using one-of-a-kind model plans designed by Bricks 4 Kidz.

While exploring principles of engineering, architecture, physics and more, pupils develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. The kids are taught how to build a new project each week. Each class begins with a teacher-led discussion related to the day’s model. Once the project is completed, children use the rest of their time, to expand their gadgets and collaborate with one another.

Their students work in a lab-type setting using LEGO components such as gears, axles and beams. Instructional content is multi-disciplinary and designed by educators to increase pupils’ general knowledge and introduce S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts related to the day’s model.

Jadesola Adedeji is passionate about children's education and she constantly seeks to teach people, how transformations in global education, are linked to rising costs, mental health, career choices & acquiring non traditional skills, that in today's world! Jade Adedeji the enterprising daughter of Bashorun Ogunmiloro, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that today's parents get the message!

I guess they are just trying to tone down the perceived negativeness of being called Afonja.

Afonja is one of the important men in our history, besides a lot of Yorubas today bear the name. So being 'afonja' is not bad at all.

I'd prefer if we simply used Yoruba though.

Women in Management, Business and Public Service (also known as WIMBIZ) is a nonprofit organisation for Nigerian women. The organization is located in Ikoyi, Lagos. It was founded in the year 2001, to promote women in all spheres of life, with focus on women's protection and development in public and corporate entities, through regular training and networking. The establishment was formed by thirteen vision aligned women and one man. At the initial stage, just 3 women showed interest in setting up the organisation. Omobola Johnson was the first to buy into the vision, then she informed Yewande Zaccheaus and Morin Desalu. The pair mobilised other women, who became the first members of the organisation.

The co-founders are: Yewande Zaccheaus, Morin Desalu and Omobola Johnson, the former Minister of Communication.

In addition to holding conferences and workshops every year, they also have a full-fledged training centre, to support female entrepreneurs with the skills required to build a profitable and sustainable business.

The WIMBIZ Capital, WIMCAP is the investment arm of WIMBIZ, created to facilitate women’s access to finance by advocacy, training and direct business finance. This program has been created with practical modules, that if followed through by participants, have the ability to strengthen their business, and make it attractive to investors. Embedded in the training program however, are modules that are relevant to women in the corporate sector, who wish to someday start their own business, or run any corporate organization, on addition to being beneficial to women with businesses at the start-up phase.

Jide Alade, MD/CEO, Structuracasa International LLC

Jide Alade is a man who knows what his mission is as a businessman in Nigeria. His knowledge of real estate extends far beyond his passion for residential real estate. He has a long-term perspective on housing in Nigeria and has been able to see beyond the grandiose nature of Lagos to focusing on tapping into the resources and opportunities that Ibadan has to offer. His grasp on the problem that housing is facing in the country makes him a true visionary.

My first question is, were you born and raised in Ibadan?

I was born and raised in Ibadan. I grew up here; I went to Staff School, University of Ibadan. After Staff School, I left Ibadan for secondary school, University of Lagos, Youth Service Corps in Abuja then I went aboard. It was 5 years ago that I came back to Ibadan and started rediscovering my roots and I love it.
Most people know real estate as the buying and selling of houses. Can you expatiate on what real estate is?

Can you expatiate on what real estate is?

Real estate has anything to do with the built environment, any type of space that people live in, do business in, recreate in, shop in, is real estate. Our focus is on housing.

Tell us more about what you do and the impact it has on the Ibadan economy?

My area is residential real estate, my passion is housing and for Nigeria particularly I believe in the democratisation of home ownership. There are a lot of studies that tell us that the population of Nigeria is increasing rapidly and there is not enough housing, which is one big issue. Real estate is a driver of the economy, as you build you creates jobs, goods are bought and sold, and commerce is generated.

What are some of the problems you’ve found with the real estate sector in Nigeria?

A big issue we’ve been having in Nigeria is the ability to provide a payment methodology for people who are buying residential real estate and pay for it over time, that is, mortgage. That is a market that is still in its infancy. The percentage of mortgage outstanding to GDP in Nigeria is below 1%. A lot of advanced economies go much higher than that. So there’s very little mobility, people don’t move houses or change houses frequently which also affects the economy.

Any plans to branch out of residential real estate into other real estate facets?

At this time, the focus is residential and we might do something here or there in other sectors but not as a primary core of our business. There’s more than enough work to be done in the residential real estate space in Nigeria.

Have you always known that real estate was the path you wanted to take?

Growing up, I wanted to be a pilot but I didn’t have very good eyesight, apparently, guys that wear glasses don’t make very good pilots. I was discouraged from taking that path. Very soon after, I discovered a love for the built environment, for making things, for designing so I got into architecture. I actually don’t actively practice architecture now; I’m more on the business side of things, business strategy, real estate development. After graduating from Unilag with a degree in architecture, I went to the United States and got my Masters in Real Estate Development and an MBA in Finance.

Am I guessing right when I say there are no regrets for deciding to start your Real Estate Company in Ibadan?

I don’t think I have regrets about starting in Ibadan. Obviously, every business has issues; I won’t call them regrets I’ll say they are learning pains that one has experienced in Ibadan and one would probably have experienced anywhere else. Ibadan is giving us the opportunity to build a distinct brand.

Structuracasa International LLC was founded in 2008 by a team of US based real estate developers with combinations of skills and attributes including real estate development, real estate brokerage, business strategy, finance, home building and international business experience. This team of like minded individuals joined forces to further the democratization of housing opportunity for people in modern African societies.

Oluwatosin Oshinowo-Akinkugbe is a bright, young architect, whose futuristic and cutting-edge architectural designs, are beginning to make the Nigerian corporate world, sit up and take notice. In 2012, she set up her own firm, cmDesign Atelier, an architecture design consultancy practice based in Lagos, executing notable projects in the city such as Maryland Mall, which opened in June 2016.

Her journey into the world of architecture and design, started early in life, from following her father to construction sites. Her dreams to become an architect was inspired by looking at building plans her father brought home, while she was still in secondary school. She graduated as an architect and joined the Architecture Association, London. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Design, from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College, London.

Before setting up her practice, she worked for international leading organizations such as Skidmore Owing & Merril’s LLP London and the Office of Metropolitan Architecture Rotterdam, where she was part of the team that designed the 4th Mainland Bridge proposal, in 2008. Upon relocation to Lagos, she practiced at James Cubitt Architects and was team lead on the master plan and Corporate Head Office Building for Nigeria LNG in Port Harcourt.

This is an artist's impression of the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge.

Her work on the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge, she said, was intense and futuristic. The team that designed the bridge included five other persons and took about 10 weeks to complete. When completed, the double-layer bridge would not only serve as means of vehicular movement, it would also aid social and commercial interactions among pedestrians.

The Maryland Mall, designed by her firm, is scheduled to open for operations later in June. The mall, designed to take advantage of minimal space allotted for its construction, is a five-storey building with a basement for 219 parking spaces, a Shoprite, four cinema screens, 1 food court, I bar and 40 shops.

Being given such a project to execute, Tosin said, would heighten clients’ confidence in Nigerian architectural firms. “The nature of architecture involves cost and risk. People naturally are apprehensive to let a young person, let alone a woman, take on such a task,” she said in an interview. “My competence is always in question. New clients are baffled when meeting us. The irony is that in my industry, I think it is more of a challenge to be a young person, than to be a woman.” https://guardian.ng/guardian-woman/tosin-oshinowo/

I am from Ikorodu, and I recall how my parents made emotional investments, building houses in the village..... The thing is, I am part of the ongoing generation sent away for school, and then you come back home, and still hear the same things being said before you left. That was the reason our parents paid huge fees for us to study abroad. It was for us to bring back knowledge in whatever capacity, and give our own two cents back to society. Yes we have had some bad people who have abused this trust, so there are people who think locals can’t do things better than foreigners, but there are a few of us who still know what we are doing. So it’s nice to see that this client had enough faith to give us the opportunity to deliver on this project.
