You guys should chill especially the Nigerian. You don't have to continue on these path that always produce negative result.

Nigeria is growing and that's Good but others have optain such capabilities prior to us, as such have expertise we don't.
Its like comparing Chinese military hardwares with that of US, the may fly sheath jets but its common knowledge that the Chinese are growing in such capabilities & the American fighter will have better engine n co
I completely agree with you, generally we agreed on this thread to stop making comparisons and proud statements that include “best in Africa”. We don’t like when the SA guys do it so we shouldn’t do it either.

Don’t you guys already make something that looks prett much like this but without a ramp and RWS

I think these have a much bigger "bite". Target acquisition and missile firing capability. According to one website, let me not talk as if I'm an expert.

Yes Sir, anything for love of country.

I had to go the extra mile to ask because the naivety, ignorance of some of the comments on the ground clearance of the Ara had become nauseating.

I don't usually respond to those comments, i find that it makes no sense giving credibility to one's ignorance.

The response from Proforce is very clear, i am also immensely thankful to the team.

This Is Brilliant, Like Fine Words On Marble. Your Love For Country Makes Jealous. As Always You Are A Pleasure To Read.

Again, Warm Thanks Sir.

Apparently the deal is very good. It comes with tons of weapons, maintenance facilities and training. It is possibly a contract ceiling for now and we will probably draw down a few hundred million on it every year meaning 4 to 5 aircraft with weapons by 2018 and more the following year and so on.

Very clever to acquire capability this way.

It is also the full capability acquisition including patrolling, finding terrorists, sending and receiving information data and video, killing terrorists then resuming patrol et.c. All these at $500 per flying hour. Good stuff.

Not to claim i am sad by this unfortunate turn of event for the SA navy, as i'll be lying to myself. However in my opinion the SA model of purchasing defence equipment in Lump Sum is not sustainable and should be reviewed.

The 1999 arms deal that got the Gripens and Valours was funded entirely by bank loans, which are still being paid to this day. It doesn't seem economical to follow the same route with the purchase of OPVs. Instead adding an OPV and an IPV every 2 years should be the best way forward.

Well, the pages of Nairaland can now rest after 4 years of non-stop hammering of Project Biro.

The United States’ latest report on the state of the anti-terror war in Nigeria bears a strikingly true reflection of the current situation in the country, though the focus was on last year. It is a story of the resurgence of a deadly group that was once driven to the fringes, but is now bouncing back with a vengeance, especially in its well-known tactics of unconventional warfare.

Despite Nigeria’s claims of technically defeating Boko Haram, the terror group that has been waging Islamist insurgency against the government since 2009, the US Department of State report said the group’s killings, bombings and attacks on civilian and military targets have not relented. This worrying situation is reaffirmed by another report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which in May expressed concerns about the alarming rate of deployment of Improvised Explosive Devices by the extremist group in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, and its environs.

Among other things, the US report accused the Nigerian authorities of failure to rescue all the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls and inability to hold down territories recaptured from Boko Haram, which once controlled territories in the three most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The territories were big enough for Boko Haram to declare a Caliphate, with Gwoza as the capital.

The reports could not have come at a better time, with Boko Haram reportedly back to the infamous Sambisa Forest, its operational headquarters before it was ousted last year. Although the military have tried to say that it is not their responsibility to hold down territories after terrorists have been flushed out, it makes little or no difference; when no structures are erected by the government to fortify the liberated areas, they become prone to more attacks.

Boko Haram has continued to make its presence felt in Nigeria and the neighbouring countries in a devastating manner through the effective use of suicide bombing and ambush. Figures from government agencies involved in the counterinsurgency operations indicate that the terror group deployed more than 145 girls in suicide bombing missions between January and July this year. The figure does not include the number of male bombers who are usually deployed in attacks on mosques. Quite bizarrely, some of the female suicide bombers had babies strapped to their backs.

With no fewer than 27 people reportedly killed and 82 others injured in a market attack two weeks ago in Konduga, near Maiduguri, attacks are becoming even more intensified. An Aljazeera report claims that about 143 people have been killed by bombing since June. Analysis by the Combating Terrorism Centre at West Point and Yale University, US, shows that 434 suicide attacks have been traced to Boko Haram since 2011. Of the 338 bombers whose gender could be identified, 244 were women.

Aside from suicide bombing, which is liberally employed when they have their backs to the wall, Boko Haram members have been laying siege to military convoys and killing soldiers and officers. In a recent pathetic case, the extremist group outgunned a unit of the Army and killed nine soldiers and a newly-promoted officer, M. Medawa, days to being decorated with the rank of a captain. Another very shocking and no doubt daring incident was the ambush on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation oil prospecting team that resulted in multiple deaths and the kidnap of 10 NNPC officials, and lecturers from the University of Maiduguri, who were part of the team. Reports indicate that between 50 and 80 people, including soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, died in the July 25 ambush.

It is sad that while the Islamists have been able to vary their tactics and bounce back even when they are thought to have been degraded, the Nigerian authorities appear to be content with just chasing after them whenever they commit their atrocities. Why can’t the military be proactive enough to preempt the terrorists and checkmate them before they strike? Why should Boko Haram appear to have infiltrated the military and the latter have not been able to penetrate the group? What kind of intelligence are the military working with? Adaptability is the secret of success in an asymmetrical war.

This is not a war that should be fought for ever. The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has given a 40-day ultimatum for the capture of the Boko Haram chief, Ibrahim Shekau. Right from the beginning, the capture of Shekau and his top commanders should have been a priority. And if intelligence has been deployed effectively, there is no reason why he should not have been either captured or taken out by now.

Following the American model, taking out of terror leaders has been an integral part of their campaign. This made it possible to eliminate such al-Qaeda, Taliban and Islamic State leaders as Osama bin Laden in Pakistan; Anwar al-Alwaki in Yemen; Faruq Qatani in Afghanistan; Abu Muhammad Adnani in Syria; Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour in Afghanistan and Mohammed Emwazi, aka Jihadi John. It was possible to eliminate them because of intelligence efforts facilitated by the locals.

Nigeria must adopt a holistic strategy to fight terror. The Nigerian military have to collaborate more with the neighbouring countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon in operations and intelligence sharing. Security apparatus should be more professionally deployed to be able to drive deeply underground in dismantling terrorist cells. Above all, the intelligence community should be able to win the confidence of the international community to be able to share intelligence and provide the technology needed to degrade terrorism.

At another level, religious authorities should shut out radical proponents of political Islam and its destructive plague. As Morocco has successfully done, the Nigerian State must also protect its citizens from invasive, extreme forms of Islam. As it is in all wars, captured terrorists should be swiftly brought to justice.

I wonder what you'll say when OPV is reinstated. And the request for IPV's, what did the article say? As already stated on Nairaland, funding for OPV's had already been shifted to 2018/2019 financial year. Not a single bolt had been purchased yet, and no company had started building anything. You are celebrating a non existant victory grin. OPV requirement is now gone, never to be seen again in a few months?

Also, I'm curious....which of the arms deal Gripens, submarines, Hawks or Frigates are still being paid for to this day? Kindly elaborate. Or again you made something up?

SHAREDNigeria thanks US for sale of aircraft
The US $593m (£460m) sale of 12 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria has gone ahead, the Reuters news agency reports saying that the Pentagon has let Congress know.

Nigeria wants the aircraft, which can be used for surveillance and attack, to help in the fight against Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Nigeria's vice-president has tweeted about the deal:

Report
The sale was delayed by the Obama administration after a catastrophic incident involving the Nigerian military.

About 90 people, mainly women and children, were killed in January when the Nigerian Air Force mistakenly bombed a camp in the country's north-east, which was hosting thousands of those who had fled Boko Haram.

Personally I dont join your guys in their unavoidable male ego boxing match. Observe, days after posting of ARA'e best new photos by Nigerians here, RSA guys largely disappeared for many days, no posting. Later appeared full force punching the ARA MRAP comments that they can find so called faults in. Nigerians never said its best technology in the world but one of the best and that is true because we posted official data and diagrams of ARA Tatra chassis here, European manufacturer claims one of the best engine and chassis: "TATRA has been manufacturing cars since 1897 and is the oldest automotive factory in Central Europe. The unique chassis concept has been continuously improved since 1923 – and to this day successfully imitated by no one." Anybody disputing those facts should kindly redirect their questions to Tatra head office in Europe. Also Nigerians said it will beat the best in sales in Africa's market based on available pricing facts, see PDF published by FMF on Nigerian budget for ARA, priced cheaper than competitors in the African market, what is wrong in predicting market sales if you are far cheaper? I don't see false claims by Nigerians on ARA except that you see it in the light of a type of claim an RSA guy would make.

Suddenly I read news here today from RSA guys that claim western standard technology going to buy simple eastern war boats from Russia for their westernized navy! I think the RSA guys are the ones who should cool down their claims of the best in weaponry. Just saying, not angry, not insulting. Thank you everybody.

The chassis has absolutely nothing to do with the survivability of the crew (which is the whole point of an MRAP). Survivability, and how this vehicle performs in the field will be all down to the engineering effort at Proforce, not the chassis they are using/imported. But choosing a good chassis is of course a good start.

And my last point on this topic, if you don't see any false claims then I clap my hands. Its not even a month, ARA has not been pushed to breaking point. Nigerian army has not given feedback yet, but already your market research predicts you'll take over the African market. Okay then.

The Headquarters of the United States Department of Defence, the Pentagon, has informed the US Congress of the sale of 12 Super Tucano A-29 ground attack aircraft and weapons to Nigeria to fight the Boko Haram sect in the northern part of Nigeria.

According to Reuters, the Pentagon communicated the sale of the 12 ground attack aircraft valued at $593m (N181bn) to the US Congress on Monday.

The report quoted Pentagon’s Defence Security Cooperation Agency as having made the announcement to the US legislature.

The Super Tucano A-29, “an agile, propeller-driven plane with reconnaissance and surveillance as well as attack capabilities is made by Brazil’s Embraer.”

Nigeria is expected to receive formal notification within weeks, setting in motion the deal with Nigeria.

They added that the arrangement would call for Nigeria purchasing up to 12 Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft with sophisticated targeting gear.

Nigeria is expected to cough out $600m for the weapon

off topic :russia has delivred four MI-35M Helicopter gunships to pakistan

Pakistan’s Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) has confirmed that Pakistan has received four Mil Mi-35M assault helicopters from Russian Helicopters.

The statement was issued by DEPO’s Brig. Gen. Waheed Mumtaz during the 2017 International Military-Technical Forum (Army 2017), which took place in Moscow between August 22 to 27.

“The contract was signed, we received all four cars [Mi-35M] and now we get new equipment,” said Mumtaz responding to a journalist (via the RIA Novosti News Agency).

Pakistan ordered four Mi-35Ms in August 2015 in a $153 million U.S. deal, which included training, spare parts and ground support equipment. It was Pakistan’s first true weapon purchase from Russia.

The Mi-35M is a modernized variant of the Mi-24V Hind, a popular Soviet-era attack helicopter based on the ubiquitous Mil Mi-8/17 Hip transport helicopter platform. As a result, the Mi-35M encompasses many improvements, among them an integrated countermeasures suite and ability to deploy guided weapons.

Powered by two TV3-117VMA or VK-2500 turboshaft engines, the Mi-35M can deploy anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), guided and laser-guided rockets and gun-pods. Besides its two aircrew, the Mi-35M can also carry eight armed personnel in its cabin and ferry cargo of up to 2,400 kg with a sling.

In May, Rosonboronexport announced that a newer version, the Mi-35P, was also eliciting interest from overseas. The state-owned arms-trade body revealed that it was in negotiations with several countries.

Brig. Gen Mumtaz told RIA Novosti that Pakistani aircrews were acclimating to the Mi-35. However, upon the conclusion of this program, Pakistan will examine the notion of procuring other Russian weapons, be it additional helicopters or armoured, aviation and naval systems.

In 2015, IHS Jane’s had reported that Pakistan was interested in expanding its Mi-35 order – it aimed to procure up to 20 Mi-35s in the coming years. Pakistan was also negotiating with Rostec for a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centre to fully support its Mi-17/171 and Mi-35 helicopters http://quwa.org/2017/08/27/russia-delivered-mi-35m-assault-helicopters-pakistan/
