Greetings to all the Elders in the house. I am Nicole and currently work as an IT Business Analyst in an Investment House. I am Female and 31. I have a master degree from one of the top 10 schools in the UK, and first degree in Computer Science and Law. I've worked as a BA for 5 years with ITIL , CBAP and other certifications under my belt. While my fiancée works in a Bank in Treasury. His first degree is in an Political Science but he's worked in the Treasury arm of the bank for about 3 years. Now my dilemma is , how feasible would it be for him to get a job? Since we are both considering relocating. He's an amazing man but sometimes when I remember that his line of work does not sell as fast as IT , I get discouraged about settling down permanently with him. I feel because I have worked with IT professionals for most of my working life, I believe such skills are more in demand. Asides the job thingy, my fiancée is one of the most amazing and selfless individuals ive ever met.

please do we have lawyers among our seniors? I am awaiting PPR and would like to know how it is for Nigeria trained lawyers in Canada?

I have done my research and I understand the process for qualification and joining the bar. Is it the same process for corporate lawyers (company secretaries). even though I have been called to the bar in Nigeria for several years I have never been in litigation, over the years I have worked with several companies as head of corporate affairs/company secretary and I am also a chartered secretary (ICSA). contract negotiation and drafting is one of my core strengths.

What are job prospects and pay like?

I intend to get a masters degree to help me break into the system and get an articling position more easily but I have always had a flair for psychology and I don't mind going back to school to study for it part time if its a good field to go into in Canada.

please forgive my rambling..... I will appreciate your advise/suggestions.

Knowing your skills and experience, you are best suited to see what the job prospects are across different cities and what the requirements are to land a role. Study the profiles of people working in your field on indeed.ca and LinkedIn to see what qualifications they hold, possibly connect with them especially the Nigerians to get first hand account of their experiences

This decision is entirely up to you after researching the prospects as suggested above and reaching out to people working in the various fields. You might not need to go as far as getting a masters straight away but could segue into a good role first based on your current experience and networking here. There are many paralegal opportunities you could consider as well as administrative positions considering your background in company secretariat

Babe to pass plab is one thing.. To get a Damn job or residency is another. Same thing is usmle. My colleague wrote primaries, plab, usmle and got residency in the USA first before d UK or naija. So I say it's God grace. It's not on cap fits all

You're right, dear. US has a lot of residency slots actually but I don't know why I have an aversion to settling in the US. GRACE differs and there's no rule to how things will eventually turn out. I'm just going to keep being in the 'know' until I'm qualified to relocate.. One thing is certain, it will all end in praise!!!

This has always been in place, i.e., jus soli, the right of anyone born on Canadian territory to citizenship.

I started from the APEGA website. Put in an application for EIT and was then directed to the WES website where I followed the step by step guide for APEGA licensing applicants. My previous posts gives a break down of the cost. See summary below -

How to Obtain a World Education Services ICAP Report

1.Register for APEGA's Member Self-Service Centre, and receive your ID number. This ID number will be required to order your WES Report.

2.Follow the instructions to continue to the WES website for the next step of the application process.

3.Follow the instructions provided by WES. If you already have an evaluation report from WES, you may need to upgrade that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

4.WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA digitally. Physical copies will not be accepted


On the WES website it states that the docs I used for my initial application will be transferred to my new upgraded application (i.e. ECA to Course-by-Course) BUT surprisingly they came back with an email saying they are awaiting verification of my BSc transcript from my University. All other docs (i.e. my MSc + BSc degree certs and MSc transcript verification) were transferred from my previous application so I didn't have to do anything. I don't know if this is now the norm, but yeah that's the process I had to undergo.

Please note that APEGA licensing is for those who will be settling in Alberta and want to practice Engineering.

Hi KW01, You will need to get a certificate of qualification from NCA (National Committee on Accreditation)- the first step to getting a Certificate of Qualification is to apply for an assessment of your credentials.
After reviewing an application, the NCA will issue an assessment report to the applicant listing the subjects and/or legal education that is required to ensure that the applicant’s legal education and training is equivalent to that provided by an approved law school in Canada.
In order to obtain an NCA Certificate of Qualification, most applicants are required to demonstrate competence in a number of subjects. Applicants may demonstrate competence in one of three ways:
successful completion of NCA examinations;
by registering as a special student in a Canadian common law degree program and successfully completing the assigned subjects as part of your program of studies;
a combination of (1) and (2).
Once an applicant has successfully completed the NCA requirements, the applicant may request a Certificate of Qualification by visiting the NCA portal

1. Do i have to list APEGA as a separate recipient as that option comes at an extra cost or is an E-Report automatically sent to WES.
2. I read in your previous email that you called WES to clarify the sending of undergrad transcripts again. Did this effort yield any positive results? Do you know if this cumbersome process can be waived?

I want to find out if it is compulsory to travel with my baby's infant car seat. She is 1+ and her legs are already longer than the seat but I have intention of buying toddler seat when we land. So my question is can I drop this infant seat here and not travel with it? Is it compulsory when taking a taxi from the airport or other transportation for the baby to be strapped in? At least for first few weeks.

Landed seniors, please help.

You are most welcome. Below are answers to your questions -
1. Yes you have to list APEGA (that's the main reason for this evaluation anyways). It cost $7 (I think) for delivery to APEGA. You may choose not to pay the $30 for the additional copy to be sent to you (it's up to you really).
2. No, the WES call didn't yield the result I wanted or expected. They only insisted my uni has to verify the transcript (it feels like the WES reps just read out the same scripted message). You can try your luck though - could be different.

You can travel with your infant car seat as hand luggage. Some international airlines allow it and you can even strap it in on the airplane seat and the baby sleeps in it.
You can also make inquiries about renting a car at the airport when you land and renting a car seat along with it. Some rental companies offer this service and I have done this before but in America.
Another option is to get someone to pick you up from the airport and buy an infant car seat as they are coming to pick you up, so that you can use it. You can always return it back to the store afterwards if it's not exactly what you want.

It is compulsory that children below a certain age must be strapped in when they are in a moving vehicle. If you want to risk the short ride from the airport to the store to buy a car seat, well..I don't know much about that. Maybe you can get away with it. And if you are stopped, you can show them your landing papers (you just landed)

I was genuinely befuddled the first time someone asked me that question. I took it quite literally and couldn't quite figure out why they needed to know about my night. I didn't know how to answer and had to ask someone else about it as I didn't know when it became the norm to ask people about their after dark activities.
