My long term goal is to quit. But six months too short. I need more experience and capacity building. And develop a good exit strategy. Wouldnt want this to repeat it self elsewhere. But my main concern is the errands, not my colleagues.

I honestly don't know what to say about the errands. You shouldn't start what you can't continue with. He will now feel like you are being proud.

My team mates of five have these in common: Language and Religion. This is affecting my performance on the job as they often communicate in their local dialect, leaving me out. Sometimes, I am marginzlised in the process.
Also, my HOD (though of my religion) singles me out for errands such as buying him food even when I am seriouly busy.
What do I do as I always feel depressed over these each day I go to work? I am really worried. Please I need professional counsel.
Also, I think I might need a counselor/mentor. I feel I need someone to help me package myself and develop a professional deamenor.
Somebody HELP ME!
This is pure bullying. It is unfortunate we don't take cases of bullying in work places seriously in this sphere. If there is a higher office you can complain to, please do.

That is my concern too. But every challenge has a solution :
The human will, that force unseen,
The offspring of a deathless Soul,
Can hew a way to any goal,
Though walls of graite intervene.

Be not impatient in delay
But wait as one who understands;
When spirit rises and commands
Then God is ready to obey.

Obviously it is. Have been having sleepless nights for months over this. It's an emotional and psychological abuse. I hardly talk because of it. Always quite and watching. It's affecting my performannce.

I understand. That is why you have to speak to someone high on the rank so it doesn't degenerate into something else. You can also talk to your colleagues about it, let them know how you feel about their actions, if they are professional enough they would adjust.

Get someone he respects ( maybe a mentor if you find one here) to talk him out of this habit or let the person make him understand that it is a favour that he shouldnt take for granted

Don't know the nature of your job but I will advice that you channel your energy n time to develop your self, learn those things that will make u outstanding n gives u a better leverage than your team mates. It could be skills on d job or anything related to the job that your team mates r ignorant of.Assess your team mate capability n challenges on the job, go and learn those things they r not good at in order to add more value to your self n take charge when it comes to your job. My job is technically in nature but what kept me going on is my ability to use all means of self development to learn more abt my job.when you know your job no body will intimidates u.

The best thing to do is talk to your "team mates" and "HOD", these are the people you have issues with, not Nairalanders. Talk to them about these things and you'll get an instant result. I don't believe in "suffering and smiling" faking and managing bad situations when I can simply say my mind and be free.

Again, the best thing to do is talk to the people you have issues with, and face the consequences, of course.

Honestly, I am in a different part of the country other than mine.
Could you share your strategy with me? Thanks
I think it can be summarized as Diplomacy
-Develop interest in their language and culture, even try to speak it, no matter how weak the attempt is.
-Use the divide and conquer approach- study the individuals and know their weakness. Approach them from their level of weakness.
-Make them understand (playfully) that they have the upper hand being they they are at home, even if you are ahead of them by qualification. This is called stooping to conquer.
-Don't drag privileges with them, esp if ur in the north or East (i have worked in these parts) .Those parts of the country aren't too accommodating and tolerant of competition. Just do your work assiduously.
All these may not work but this is what works for me.

The OP must be IGBO; always complaining of marginalization, always the 'victim'.

SMH!

If you are not comfortable with your colleagues speaking their native tongue, then leave...PERIOD!

This is what I realise too. I am tired of suffering and smiling.

I can relate that with the AfonjAs they are good at that

This happens to me severally but my 5yrs staying in Lagos wasn't a waste I pretend as if I don't hear their language but ignore their ass

My dear just focus on your career do your best and watch them marvel

Very annoying sets of human beings
It's only pride that'll make you live somewhere for 5yrs and not wanting to speak their language.
and it's common among igbos.

But you'll go to Germany or Netherlands and within a week you're speaking their language like you're born there.
Hypocrisy at its peak

Na we dey give dem mouth now!

Seriously, we Yoruba's dey f*ck up with this 'accommodating' nonsense.

What they do 10x to the majority of others at their home, they cry 'marginalization' for far less.

@ You OP: risingrainboll

If you can't be humble enough to assimilate at least the dominant, indigenous language of your colleagues at your workplace, especially when the company is located in their home.

Then you shouldn't be there in the first place, particularly if you are Igbo...

Adapt and assimilate peacefully or get out!

Nuff said...

Grow up. The HOD obviously trusts you more than Others . Learn their local dialect silently and use it to your advantage. I hate people who complain. Don't forget about their religion too. You don't have to be of the same faith.

Bros learn to speak/ pick small words of the language

In the west, east and northern part of this country that is how it is a lot of times.

If you work in an environment especially core states there's a tendency to have a lot of people from that tribe and they naturally will want to speak their language a lot.

My initial thought was that he likes and trusts me until he started asking me to replace. replace.Truth is, he is taking advantage of me. I gave him a step and he is taking a mile. I think it will be wrong for me to assume he will stop. Infact, I think I should expect more errands, leading to more frustration.
There was even a day he felt disasfied with what I bought him and he told me he would have asked me to eat the food had he not been hungry.
Since I am not happy, there is no need to indulge. Will end in frustration.

You brought this upon yourself. Naturally, most Nigerians are like that. Since you have noticed that your boss do not have respect why accept free ride. Whether you like it or not this is what free ride causes. My advice stop that free ride cos you won't tell me without your boss u won't go to work or u won't come back home. Then if you happen to be around him whenever he is discussing issues do not add or subtract. That is what brings people close and disrespect set in. Then for your team members the best form of revenge is success. You can always guess what is being talked Abt by their reaction. If it is not Abt you then forget it. You won't be there for forever. I pray God will give you the grace to carry on. If you a christian I don't want to assume pray and listen to Christian tapes it will calm you down. Pastor Olukoya of mfm is my favourite.
