FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017: African nations must nurture their talents post tournament, says Emmanuel Amunike

Kaushal Shukla

FIFA U-17 World Cup or the FIFA U-17 World Championships as it was called earlier, has been dominated by countries from the African continent, especially Nigeria and Ghana who have seven titles between them. Not just that, the countries from Africa have finished as runners-up on six occasions.

However, the likes of Nigeria and Ghana, along with other African nations have failed to create the same level of dominance at the senior level. No African team has ever made it past the quarter-final in the World Cup, while only three teams have made it to the last eight stage.

www.nairaland.com/attachments/5925243_u17_jpegf1575a06ec4a8db12c02d30d113d80c9

The world's biggest international competition has been dominated by European and South American teams, while the African sides have fallen by the wayside despite producing talented players at the junior levels.

"In Europe or South America when the U-17 tournaments end, the players continue with their football education at clubs. So the players continue to grow, continue to transform. Unfortunately in Africa, I believe this has been the missing link," Nigerian football great Emmanuel Amunike told reporters on the sidelines of the unveiling ceremony of the FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy ahead of the 2017 edition in October.

"The moment the African players play in the U-17 tournaments we discover that they are good players. But we only dwell on their talent. We forget to continue to prepare these players, to enable them to grow. And help them become much better players in the future," he added.

Six African players have won the Golden Ball award for the best player of the U-17 World Cup, while seven times they have finished as top scorers. However, if one revisits the names of these achievers, there are few that would be familiar to most. These young African starlets who set the competition on fire, more often than not got lost on the big stage.

However with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho — Golden Ball winner of the 2013 edition that his Nigerian side won — making it to the senior side, apart from securing a stint with Manchester City in the Premier League, the trend of African footballers fading away in obscurity after a burst of stardom at the junior level may be about to break.

"Since I took over (Nigeria U-17 team) we made sure to have a lot of sanity in the U-17 levels of youth football. I’m glad now because we are reaping the rewards of it. We have many young players from the 2013 and 2015 U-17 World Cup winning team in the senior national side and hopefully in the near future they will be able to give a very good account of themselves," stated the Nigerian great.

Amunike who helped the Nigerian U-17 team defend their World Cup title in 2015, revealed that coaching players of this age group needed a different approach.

"When you are dealing with U-17 players, they need someone to act as a friend for them. It is important that they see you as somebody who will help them and not as a coach. You try as much as possible to guide them. You must not forget that at this age, there are lot of distractions, so we must make sure they are ready to compete with the rest of the teams participating in the World Cup," Amunike said.

Defending champions Nigeria have failed to qualify for this year's competition, so last edition's runners-up Mali, tournament heavyweights Ghana and newcomers Guinea and Niger will look to keep the African flag flying in India.

'Big opportunity for India'

Carlos Valderrama, Jorge Campos, Fernando Morientes, Amunike and Marcel Desailly appeared very much on the same page when a Legends' side comprising them edged an Indian team 5-4 in an exhibition match at the Dr DY Patil stadium on Wednesday. Moments after the game, as these greats spoke about the tournament that is round the corner, none could deviate from highlighting the importance of the competition for Indian football.

"This is a huge opportunity for Indian footballers," Valderrama said.

"Someone asked how does a player go to Real Madrid? This is the best opportunity. All the big scouts, the big agents the whole world is going to be watching. So the teams must go out and enjoy the occasion, but also grab the opportunity. In football, you don’t get many chances so the players must take this opportunity. This is their time to shine and stand up." he added.

"The Indian team will have to understand that it’s a very big opportunity to shine and start something from India, from this continent where football is taking over. That's the tagline, and personally I like it very much," Desailly told reporters.

"With India hosting it (FIFA event) for the first time, I think it’s very encouraging for them. It’s a big opportunity for the youth to develop their game. We all hope and pray that one day we will be here to see not just the U-17 World Cup but also the senior Indian team play in World Cups," Amunike added.

India are placed in Group A with USA, Ghana and Colombia and play their first game against the USA on 6 October in New Delhi.

Victor Moses, Leon Balogun Selected In CAF Starting XI For Match Day 4
Two Super Eagles stars Victor Moses and Leon Balogun have both been named in Confederation of African Football's Dream Team for match day four of the African World Cup qualifiers.

In his third straight match in the World Cup qualifiers, Chelsea wing-back Moses inspired the Super Eagles to pick up a valuable point on the road at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Yaoundé.

Leon Balogun was named to the starting XI thanks to his stellar performance against the Indomitable Lions, with the Nigerian team not conceding until the 75th minute when Vincent Aboubakar converted a penalty kick.

In a 3-4-3 formation which is usually favoured by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, Moses was deployed as a right wing-back, while Mainz star Leon Balogun started in the left side of central defense.

Moses came close to scoring when he hit the bar in the second half after superb work to pick a hole in the Cameroonian defense.

This is the second straight match that the two Nigeria stars have been recognized by CAF, as they were included in the Team of the Round for match day three along with Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

CAF Best Eleven Players For Match Day Four

Denis Onyango ; Leon Balogun, Stoppila Sunzu, Ahmed Hegazy; Sadio Mane, Naim Sliti , Thomas Partey, Victor Moses; Garry Rodrigues, Alain Traore, Mohamed Salah

Young players can only be pushed into the senior team if there are such opportunities or voids.

Many thought the young English U20 players will immediately displace the senior team players but things don't work out that way. These young players have to be gradually introduced else the team would be deficient of experience. If Solanke cannot make the English senior team it simply means he is not good enough at the moment. They have kept them busy with the U21s just to ensure their development continues till when they are deemed fit to displace the ageing senior players.

Germany also practices this kind of transition.

Talking about Mbappe, none of those English young players is on the same level with him. Besides he is not even yet a starter with France.
It is only exceptionally talented teen players that break into the senior teams of such teams as England, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina. They don't just discard their senior players just because a group of teens just won an U20 WC.

Are you seeing what Germany is doing. http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/unstoppable-germany-look-ruthless-on-way-to-retaining-world/1cxviy4z99nlu11mi17neora8x

Ten Things Super Eagles Manager Must Do To Reach Russia 2018

For Nigeria, amassing 10 points at the end of the matchday 4 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers is already a great achievement.

Unfortunately, this achievement will be meaningless if the Super Eagles fail to qualify for the biggest football competition on the globe.

Zambia made Group B more interesting with a 1-0 victory over Algeria on Tuesday night, putting them in second place with seven points from four games and three points adrift leaders Nigeria.

In the next month of international football for Nigeria, Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr will likely face an amount of pressure that he hasn’t seen in his coaching career with a potential decider against Zambia in Uyo.

That’s why he must make his plans now, and not wait to start thinking about what he and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should do.

Proactively, he must take the following 10 actions if he wants to enjoy the 2018 summer in beautiful Russia for his first ever World Cup:

1)Prepare his team psychologically for the energetic Zambian side.

2)Set his preparation plan that will overshadow the opposition.

3)Isolate his team 100% away from all kinds of media, so as to avoid distractions or media fights that might emotionally affect fans and players.

4)Fix his main players list, taking into consideration form and injuries.

5)Forecast the attitude and competences of the enemy in all scenarios with data analysis of their performance in the next three weeks.

6) Impose his style and game plan on the match in Uyo and select the 11 players who can execute his game plan regardless of the history or fame of the players, along with a substitute list that can change the game should the game plan need to change.

7)Focus on harmony between the players, and establish a mix of diversified skills that can help in all expected and unexpected situations.

coolBe brave with well-calculated risks from the first minute of the match till the end.

9)Do not allow any interference of NFF administration or management in his plans, as he knows and we all know well who they are and their capabilities.

10) Over Confidence of any kind shouldn't be allowed. We are almost there. We must not underrate the Zambians. Rhor needs to make his players show respect to the opposition and get the job done.

From us at Allnigeriasoccer.com we wish the Super Eagles the best in their game against Zambia, with the hope that they destroy the Chipolopolo at the magnificent Godswill Akpabio Stadium and pick their sixth World Cup ticket.

you can see from point no.3 that the writer is asking the coach to bar players from all kinds of media (which includes social media platforms like nairaland) which further concretizes the notion that the players have been visiting these platforms. Even if the coaching crew enacts such a rule, I think it will be likely flouted because the coaches won't always be with the players to monitor them and ensure 100% compliance. These are all pointers to the fact that the players and even coaches give attention to the media. And nairaland is a significant part of the Nigerian media.

Arsenal Loanee Nwakali : I Chose Number 25 Jersey Because Of Kanu

Arsenal Loanee Nwakali : I Chose Number 25 Jersey Because Of Kanu
Arsenal loanee Kelechi Nwakali has chosen to wear the number twenty-five jersey at his new Dutch Eredivisie club VVV Venlo, allnigerisoccer.com can exclusively report.

VVV Venlo had announced the capture of the attacking midfielder on the so-called transfer deadline day, August 31, without revealing his kit number.

It was earlier claimed that Nwakali wanted to suit up with the number ten jersey at Venlo, but his agent and brother Allwell Nwakali has explained why he picked the number 25 kit.

''Kelechi Nwakali has been handed the number twenty five jersey by VVV Venlo,'' Allwell Nwakali told allnigeriasoccer.com.

''He chose the jersey number because of Nwankwo Kanu, Kanu has been Kelechi's role model since he started playing
football''.

Last season, Kelechi Nwakali was allocated the number ten shirt at second-tier MVV Maastricht, same number he wore with pride for the Golden Eaglets at the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup.

VVV Venlo have won two of their first three matches in the Dutch top-flight this season and occupy the eighth position in the standings.

thankGod he has switched to Nigeria. But he should be featured in the next game irrespective of how crucial the game is, probably from the left back. Shebu has been in a better form since Ola started reporting to camp. This is what competition can bring. Ola should be capped even if it for few minutes. The idea of players with dual nationality not being capped after honoring invitations may not sound very good to players like Tammy that the federation is trying influence. Tyronne may not be happy with the fact that he has not been capped whether he pretends to be happy and satisfied with it or not.

as we can see they want to be at the Musial

Hungry' Super Eagles owe Nigerians says Mikel

Nigeria's young Super Eagles are 'hungry' to be at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and want to make amends for a poor 2014 performance, according to captain John Mikel Obi.

The Super Eagles are in pole position to book a ticket to Russia as they lead Group B on 10 points, three ahead of second-placed Zambia who they face next month in Uyo. Mikel says that though this is a young team, they are hungry to qualify.

"We have a very good team here, a very very young team. I think this is the youngest team we've had since I've been here," the 30-year-old answered KweséESPN.

"I started very young and I think I was the only young player when I started playing with the likes of (Nwankwo) Kanu, (Joseph) Yobo and Jay-Jay (Okocha).

"These players were coming to the end of their careers when I joined. Now there are so many young players and they are hungry to play, to be in the World Cup.

"I think if we manage to get there it will be the first World Cup for 90 percent of the team."

Mikel, who missed the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with injury, says he is also itching to return, for a good reason.

"I'm still hungry and I want to be there, too. I want to lead the team.

"I think the World Cup we had last time wasn't the best and I think we owe Nigerians a better World Cup if we manage to get to Russia. And that's exactly what we want to do."

In comparison to the teams he played with in the past, Mikel says the current squad are a ball playing team who just want to play.

"This team is a good team. We know how to play. We want to play football and if we manage to get there, we will play the same way and hopefully we can have a better World Cup."

To get there, the Super Eagles first have to get past Zambia, and then Algeria in the final two matches of the qualification series.

In all my years of following World Cup qualifiers, since the 1982 world Cup qualifiers, Nigeria has never had it this smooth.

We have in the past gone into the last game of World cup qualifiers with a "must win" situation, with our hearts in our mouths and hoping someone will do us a favor elsewhere, though with the exception of 2014WC qualifiers where we beat Ethiopia on a 4-1 aggregate.

Unlike many others we are going into this one with our destiny in our hands.

Just like before the Cameroon game, I am not having sleepless nights over this game. My major concern would be if the boys would be as fit as they were against Cameroon and also if they can bring the same kind of killer mentality with which they played the Cameroon game in Uyo.

We will beat Zambia. They will see fire that day.

Said the same earlier. We need to treat all our matches like the Cameroon game in Uyo. That's the kind of SE I would die to watch.

Humility017:

thank you...I think has been slacking in this regard
inviting these players is not just enough
You try get them cap tied...
I don't know if any of the backroom staff lack this common sense...

So annoyin these same players can switch allegiance tomoro...

that change for musa...would have been for ebuehi or ola aina...
by so doing you get them tied.

the dude will even be happy to have featured in his country but win....
just one minute wrong sub can cost a match,we r not in a hurry to cap any player, before any will decide to switch,he must have made up his mind that there is no going back,if any player changes his mind because he was not capped on time is to his own disadvantage, cos he may never b accepted back by his former country.

l'm sure that the SE will want to win the remaining 2 games, because apart from WCQ,they'll also want to improve on fifa ranking.
even the Cameroonians would not want to lose to Zambia because of pride.

so you mean aina coming in place of that musa sub...would have ruin the match?
I wonder how some of us here reason things out....
a match nigeria was already leading by 4 goals to nil
so if the dude is that bad...he shouldn't have been bothered to switch his allegiance to nigeria...
mind you...is highly rated than many of Africa defenders in his age....
playing and being rated high in championship is no fluke..

Is this a first? grin

South Africa-Sengal World Cup qualifier match to be replayed.
Fifa has ordered that a World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal be replayed after the referee awarded a penalty for a non-existent handball and was banned for life for match manipulation.

Fifa says the game, which South Africa won 2-1 in November last year, will be replayed this November. It says it made the decision to order a replay after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the life ban for the referee in question, Joseph Lamptey of Ghana.

Wonderful! Seems like a first. It would be a great thing to apply such rules in the NPFL. I think this will shake up that group

What's with the air of pessimism ogling around here.

If anything, Zambia only succeeded in delaying our qualification for the world cup. We'd qualify here in Nigeria in front of our fans and that's a plus.

We'd be in Russia, I'm optimistic about that.

I once raised an issue about the team's over-dependence on Mikel, and once suggested Ogu has what it takes to replace him (being the leader in the middle of the pack) but it seemed many of us were satisfied with the status quo. I'm hoping, we can see clearer now.

And Rorh, he's not really tactically fluid, I expect that he allows the game detect the preferred tactics, our game against SA proved it and his substitutions went further to confirm it.

I also suggested we make a few changes to the starting line up, many preferred we maintain same line up, thank God we saw how lethargic the team was, not even the changes could bring that energy to the game. We've seen teams playing their local leagues and champions league within same space of time, it's difficult seeing them field same players for both competitions.

Come October 7th we'd seal our qualification to Russia. I almost have no doubt about it.
