akinmusi: Thanks. I'm just trying to do my bit. I know this may sound cheesy. I know how expensive it is to go on these sewing courses in Nigeria, if there is someone out there who can start earning a living by watching my videos, be it sewing or cake decorating then I know that I have done my bit. I have had a lot of criticism, people sending me messages that I shouldn't be giving out this information for free but I have my reasons for doing what I do. I just hope more people will make use of this opportunity cos sewing is a big earner in Nigeria. 5 Likes |

Hello Marylandcakes, thanks for starting this, it's been very helpful. I have an issue and I would love you to help me: every time I make blouses or tops there's always excess fabric at the back. I would like to know what causes this and how to fix it. I don't think it's a zip allowance issue because it happens even in blouses that don't have zips. Thanks in advance. |

pejuhazel: Hello Pejuhazel this is a very common problem which can be solved by inserting waist and shoulder darts. Also if you watch my video on the basic bodice you will notice that I took 1/2" from the back chest to add to the front chest. I hope this has helped? |

Ammy5565: Darts are an essential part of garment construction because they allow flat fabric to take on a shape that will fit the body well. A dart is a folded wedge of fabric that is tapered and stitched down to give shape to a garment. There are two main components of a dart: the point, also known as the apex, and the legs, which start at the widest part of the dart. The dart legs are the two lines that are brought together to create the fold of fabric that is stitched. Darts need to be sewn in the correct direction, from the widest point of the legs to the apex, to ensure they lay flat and press well. Darts are found primarily in women's clothing and are meant to fit the contours of the body in a flattering way. They serve a functional purpose first and foremost, but darts can also create style lines in a garment to accentuate and enhance a design. 8 TYPES OF DARTS YOU SHOULD KNOW 1. PLAIN DARTS The plain dart is the most common type of dart that you will see in sewing and is usually found around the bust, waist and hips. This type of dart can be manipulated and altered to make different design elements that still function just like a dart such as princess seams and pleats. 2. BUST DARTS Bust darts usually start the side seam of a garment and end near the apex of the bust in order to make the bodice of a garment more formfitting. 3. FRENCH DARTS French darts are a type of elongated bust dart that start at the side seam, down near the waistline, and end up near the bust point. 4. OTHER TYPES OF PLAIN DARTS INCLUDE SHOULDER DARTS AND NECK DARTS These are used to add a feminine shape to a garment that might look boxy without that shaping. Think of the difference between a man and woman's blazer. Waist darts are also simple darts that are found in pants and un-gathered skirts. 5. DART TUCKS Dart tucks are a variation of darts that are constructed much like a standard version but the points are left open. The open ends give a pleated appearance, which adds a softer look to billowy pants and blouses. 6. ELBOW DARTS Elbow darts are seen more in couture, tailored jackets and allow you to have a more fitted sleeve with room to move. When you hang your arms loosely at your sides, you usually keep a slight bend at the elbow, and the elbow dart accommodates that natural bend. 7. DOUBLE POINTED DARTS Double pointed darts are just like having two darts joined together at their widest ends, with one point toward the bust and one toward the waist. Double pointed darts are used to give shaping to the middle of a garment like in a dress or fitted jacket. 8. CURVED DARTS Curved darts are used when the straight line of a basic dart does not provide enough contour to fit your shape. Curved darts can be stitched slightly concave or convex depending on the shape you need to fit. 1 Like

Ammy5565: In a nutshell the easiest way to understand darts is to think of your body of one flat board both lfront and back and if you had to just sew a fabric without darts it will fit perfectly. Fortunately that's not the case. wherever on the body there is a curve you will need to create a dart to give rid of the excess fabric created as a result of this curve. E.g. The curve of the breast in the front chest creates excess fabric around the waist and armhole area, but inserting darts at the waist gets rid of this excess fabric and gives the dress a more fitted look. |

Thanks so much for this rich info. Pls are there measurements that need to be taken for darts? Like where each should start and end plus its exact position (eg 2inches from bust or belly button) ?? And one last one, does every skirt, dress and blouse need dart or u decide it does when u are done and it doesn't fit perfectly? |

Ammy5565: @Ammy5566 Normally most darts ar measured 4" from the side seam line. They could be 1/2" to 2" in width and between 2" to 41/2" in length. E.g on a skirt dart the back darts are shorter than the front darts by 1" It is also possible to sew a blouse without darts. |

Also if you watched this Ankara dress tutorial you will notice that I did the lining individually for each pattern segment. You don't have to do yours this way. You can just do a one piece skirt as lining to save time. |

If you are very slim the width of your dart can be1/2" Also if you are very curvy the width can be 21/2 to 3" |
