Hello guys,

This post is for those whose programs are research or thesis based whether Masters or PhD. Please ensure your supervisors trust you enough to handle deadlines.

The supervisors here (and I am sure else where) are particular about deadlines. So meeting these deadlines is key to gaining their trusts that you can work alone with minimal supervision if need be.

In most cases, before delving in into your particular research area, you will be required to do a survey of papers in your field. This survey would normally be in the form of papers reviews (Published papers related to your research areas). Please note, you don't have to read the entire contents of a paper to know if it suits you or not. Read the abstract first; if it contains what you need, go to the technical area and results sections to get what you want. This is not the general principle but it is enough to get you by.

Most times, your supervisor MIGHT assign papers to you to read or you might have to get it yourself. To do this you need to search databases related to your research area. I am only aware of Springer (http://www.springer.com/us/), ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com/), IEEE (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/home.jsp), Elsevier (http://www.sciencedirect.com/) and the famous google scholar (http://scholar.google.ca/). In most cases, your university have access to this databases as such downloading journals from these databases are free and readily available. But remember to reference them.

When doing surveys, you might most likely forget the papers you have read, so it is better to use a good referencing system. I use citeulike (http://www.citeulike.org/). But there are others too like, mendeley (https://www.mendeley.com/), endnote (http://endnote.com/), etc, use that which works well for you. The good thing about this Bibliography sites is it helps you organize your references and you can link them to your online latex platform.

When it is time to write papers for conferences, journals or any technical papers, please use latex. It makes your work tidy and beautiful. Don't worry about downloading the software, just use online services like www.overleaf.com , www.sharelatex.com etc. They have templates for almost every journal.

Finally, when you are stuck in your research, ask your colleagues, fellow lab mates, your network, and your supervisor. Remember, it is better to ask than to assume.

Godspeed and wisdom in our pursuits.

Warm Regards,

Mazi

PS: for those who are non-thesis based, I will find out about yours and post it here in due time.

So you are telling us that someone who did a one-year MSc can extend their PGWP beyond one year once it is about to expire? This is not accurate. Share the link from CIC's website. CIC policies are all public, so this hearsay is not sufficient.

it's plausible to get an extension if the initial PWGP issued was short because of the applicant's passport expiration date meant the applicant got a shorter PGWP than s/he was eligible for. But this is technically not an extension.

Anything outside that is completely opposite of CIC rules & regulations that are published everywhere. Drop a link from CIC's website and you'll convince us instantly.

marcuskens:
thesoj...yes you can only apply for a PGWP once. However it is also an open work permit so can be extended once you are working already. And yes I have a friend who already extended theirs...so I wrote from experience

Yes you can change DLI online (people in previous threads did it and CIC doesn't say you can't do it before arrival), or (if you are really confident) tell the POE immigration officer about your change in plans to go to a different school. If you do the latter, then make sure you've paid the school fees.

By the way, uWaterloo is a really good school so consider going there. If they don't accept second deferrals, just explain your situation to them. They're likely to listen especially because your deferral is due to visa delays.

Hello House i have being a silent follower of this thread since i put in my application that was recently approved and will like to appreciate every member for their contributions.

My intention was to go Fall 2017 entry but still yet to receive my passport that was approved on 30/08/2017 and making travel arrangements and settling in won't be easy at this time. Hence, i am considering going for winter entry but the challenge i'm having is i used Uwaterloo for VISA application but no longer want to go their after considering several factors and will prefer U of Regina where i have admission offer valid till winter 2018 but waterloo informed me i can no longer defer admission since i have deferred once (May 2017 when application was still being processed).

Please how does changing DLI works for a postgraduate student like me. Can i change DLI from waterloo to Regina before entering Canada or what do you advice i do because i want to resuming studies for Winter 2018 at Regina but used waterloo to apply for VISA but waterloo does not accept a second deferal.

Your suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, pls put in for deferral of admission, order your gcms file ( hope I am correct...lol) and share your timeline here so the gurus can have a clearer view on how to help out.

In respect to the insufficient fund issue, hope there isn't a huge lodgement of fund towards printing of your statement of account? If there was, did you explain why (maybe payment from your sponsor)?

Purpose of visit... The course you're going for is it related to your first degree? Are you going for a lower degree compared to your previous degree or going for the same degree again? Why? You will need to explain in a detailed letter of explanation to the VO.

All these are my thought though, like I said, share your timeline and the gurus here will help out before reapplying... Ire o!

...My Uncle that is to act as d sponsor said he can act as my sponsor, but he cannot afford to spend raw cash now for the payment of tuition fees and transfer of fund to my acct, though his account statement is healthy based on inflow and outflow including balance as all are in Pounds.

Pls how do I go about this. Should I still use him as sponsor? Owing to the fact that his acct statement is healthy but he cannot spare d raw cash of tuition payment at the moment. But he has landed properties in U.K
If you & your uncle can convince the VO about his claims to be your sponsor then it can fly that he doesn't pay beforehand, but based on trends on this thread one sure way to defuse the VO's skepticism about a non-parent sponsor is for said sponsor to pay the fees ahead of time.

vikmeek:
Also I planned sourcing fund externally from friends to pay the fees, but my uncle will cite it that he did the payment.
You can source for funds to pay your fees, but don't even try to inaccurately tell the VO that your uncle was the source of funds. You'll be going down a path that you can't defend if there's any little scrutiny. VOs aren't stupid... you will submit your uncle's bank statements and it will be glaringly obvious that the money he supposedly used to pay your fees never left his bank account. This can lead you to a "insufficient funds" denial, even if you've paid the fees already. You've already seen applicants on this thread denied for "insufficient funds" even though they already paid fees. This happens when the VO sees something fishy with your finances and/or isn't convinced about your financial viability.

My advice: only tell the VO what you know you can reliably defend. If you are found to have misrepresented information, you may receive a ban or at best be denied.

Your post isn't totally explanatory enough, How many countries have you been before?
Have you ever been refused visa before?
And as regards your purpose of visit, i'd say your SOP wasn't solid cos your cash seem quite the deal for me, people have gotten visa with lesser cash in their bank account, you should probably list your detailed profile here!

I would have loved to see you accepted LLM. Your path for a visa would have been easier. PGD makes your path more treacherous but not impossible. My advise going forward is to work on producing a very powerful Statement of Explanation SOE (why do people here call it SOP?) on how you arrived on applying for PGD and your excitement on how this program can help you achieve you future personal goals and those of your nation.

What if the sponsor has other means of income?? So it must show that the money was transfered from the sponsor's account for VOs to approve?? I need to get this straight.....

Good day everyone,

I am a new member here, I heard the good work members here are doing in order to help fellow member with the right information. Good bless you all.

I have two questions:
First: I have decided to apply for Pre-master in Computer Science in University of Manitoba but I have problem uploading the folder containing the Two files of each of the the two Schools I attended (FCE Kontagora and Unilorin) When ever I clicked on the folder, it open the folder to upload only one file and move to the next sections, leaving the other file not uploaded. Please is any one here with the experience or what can I do? Thank you all

LOR means Letter of Recommendation. Follow up with your referees to make sure they reply before the deadline (some Nigerian lecturers are lazy and wouldn't respond at all or some would reply when the deadline has passed). So I will advise you to choose someone who is willing to write a strong and comprehensive letter for you because all these are important aspects of your application. Some programs require academic referees while others require professional referees. Check the school website for details.

Most graduate programs in Canadian Universities do not require GRE except business schools. But, people applying to Canadian Universities do write GRE to bolster their application so as to increase their chances of getting admission and also support their visa application. You can check the school website for the requirements to know if GRE is required or not. Graduate advisors are also friendly and always willing to provide answers to your questions. Contact them if you need any details.

For GRE materials, there is a GRE thread on this forum. You can download lots of materials there and also get tips on how to pass the exam.

If you can submit a strong application, you have a high chance of getting full funding. But, you need to do your research, dot your i's and cross your t's and and commit the rest to God.

It will surely end in praise smiley

Amen!! Thank you very much dear, God bless you tremendously. I have spoken with some graduate assistants and they have been helpful. You are truly blessed

All those schools are top ranked. Spread across lowly ranked schools. Infact just one top school, 2 mid ranked and 2 safe (low ranked). I committed that mistake when I was looking for USA

Thank you for always looking out for me Bukky, God bless you ore mii

Chebe01:
Adding a little bit to what @GlitteringStar wrote, Most career opportunities in public health are inter, trans, or multidisciplinary so you will find people with MSc, MPH, MComm, etc, all working within the vast field. In most universities, an MPH and MSc will have a significant research component so some research skills and experience will be needed during application. One thing you will have to determine is the area of specialisation within public health that you find to be of interest.

You do have a competitive CGPA so start doing some research and looking at potential faculty members to approach. I have an MPH and currently do a PhD

Thank you Chebe 01 I would definitely do that, thank you for taking out your time to answer me. God would honour you

People faced with refusal due to insufficient fund, travel history and purpose of visit how did you retackle and overcome it?
Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 13 by thesoj: 12:04am On Sep 11, 2017
Well good point. I am not implying that there is any such requirement. I don't mean to cause confusion, I don't think a VO would automatically deny in that scenario. I meant that one shouldn't raise a VO's suspicions, especially if the VO is already likely to be skeptical about the sponsor.
