When in 1993, the Zambian National Football team suffered a plane crash killing eighteen first team players and several officials, one player survived because he didn't honour the invitation for the match. His name, Charles Musonda, father to Chelsea's youngster, Charly Musonda.

One version holds that his club's coach convinced him not to honour the national team's call while another holds that he was truly injured and could not have joined the team in Lusaka. Either way, he missed the flight. And he missed a most likely death too.

Three years later, Charly Musonda Jr. was born.

I don't remember that team. Though I watched Senegal 92, my brain was too young to process. How they resurrected to reach AFCON final just few months later is a story for the ages. I remember, was it Mali they flogged 4-0 in the semi-final? Mali had previously knocked out Egypt who were the only team that could beat us in that Tournament, yet they disgraced Mali in the semi. Mali had also knocked out hosts Tunisia in the group stage. Honestly those boys deserved something from that tournament, they even pushed the greatest Super Eagles team close in the final.

It was very befitting that Zambia won the 2012 AFCON in Libreville, just a few miles from the plane crash site.
