ROOIKAT 105 VS STRYKER MGS-US serviceman spills the beans and utterly trashes the Stryker! His experience allows him to go beyond the advertising and brochure knowledge that dominates forums like this.

GASSSPP! The MGS only fires half power loads! He says the Rooikat 105 the 'standard to beat for recce/fire service vehicles with wheeled propulsion...' In all measures, mobility, firepower, firecontrol, armour protection, price 11mn$ to 1.5 mn$ ,the R 105 wins hands down. It wasn't even close!

https://youtu.be/voeUeMWLbb0

Same dude also says our Olifant mk1b beats the Abrams m1a2sep..... although I do agree with the above, but the 105 is over kill even the 76mm gun is more powerful than the Strykers 105mm

The 76 is no longer powerful enough against modern armour that's why the SANDF downgraded the Rooikat 76 to a fire support vehicle not the tank destroyer it was initially designed to be. If you had to take it to a modern conventional war then the 105 is the way to go.

rooikat was never a tank hunter and it not fire support even though it cam do that. it a long range raider and scout. even in the 1980s they knew the 76mm was not a true at gun

My picture of the day goes to these Limpopo Province oupas. They managed to stop 4 vehicles on their way to being smuggled to Zimbabwe including a Merc.

They dealt with an organised crime syndicate while wearing shorts. Great work. cool

Actually it wasn't just a scout, Elands did that perfectly. It was also for selectively destroying enemy armour behind enemy lines then hit the dust back to the safe zone.

Nigerian Air Force reactivates 10 aircraft
The Nigerian Air Force has taken delivery of 10 aircraft which is the first successful completed in-country Periodic Deport Maintenance of NAF aircraft. It was mention that the Reactivated Jets which include NAFs 452,453,454,455,456,457,461,466,470 and 913 were part of those rehabilitated and recommissioned under the Periodic Deport Maintenance. The aircraft were reactivated by the Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Service Limited in conjunction with Sebena Technics a foreign partner. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh explained that it would go a long way in the deployment of troops to tackle the present security challenges facing the country.

The former Minister of Defence, Mrs Olusola Obada, said the dictates of the Federal Government’s transformation policies emphasised looking inwards and capacity building for self-reliance. In addition, Mrs Olusola Obadan called on the military to focus more on Research and Development.

as i said long range raider. But it was never at any point ever seen as a tank destroyer. All so the eland had very big mobility issues and not nearly good enough endurance to make it a good scout for our mechanized forces

Why does the commando have the scarves on? Are the part of the uniform? It doesn't look like a desert zone. It's an airport.

There's a project to replace the Rooikat.

It was never a tank destroyer. The gun on the Rooikat will be effective against many targets found in SSA like technicals, IFVs, APCs etc.

upgrading to 105mm will increase the tail. Remember ops are planned around logistics. A 105mm round means the vehicle will carry less ammunition this equates to more support vehicles. An upgrade should be the proposed hybrid drive and maybe new ammunition specifically for fire support against dismounted infantry.

Focus should be on a new Main battle tank(120mm or plus gun).

Yup, 105mm shells means less ammunition is carried leaving the vehicle in need of more ammunition supply trucks, recovery vehicles etc. Not ideal for long range raiding forces.

Believe this is rather the old riot units and not STF? They were all issued the same camo uniform until 1994 or thereabout

OK, you're making plenty of sense.

So there's a planned Rooikat replacement? I thought the Army was on "we don't buy anything anymore" mode.... If they have money to spare then how about they go back to the CSIR and finish up the African Warrior programme and get us some new patterns and some 21 century webbings.

No offence intended, but i usually find it weird that there were Black members of a supposedly White racist government security tool.

How did this work out, and how were these Black members perceived in their communities?

I can see 1 Black security member in this photo.

They weren't perceived well at all, but the man you see in that photo was a sweetheart compared to people who worked under Dirk Coetzee and Eugene de Kock at Vlakplaas! The ANC itself had a number of 'askaris' people turned by one reason or the other by Vlakplaas, CCB, BOSS you name it. A number for example would be captured enroute to frontline states like Swaziland, Namibia, Angola etc and tortured. Some were petty criminals who were offered a chance at 'redemption'. Others were simply double agents sent to kick up a hornets nest. But the most famous of all askaris would be the men of 32 Battalion who were former FNLA fighters disillusioned with Holden Roberto's leadership.

Those were members of the Internal stability division also known as DIS. They wore camouflage and berets like the STF.

Their vehicles had camouflage paintings too. They were formed in the early 90s as violence increased in SA leading to the 94 elections.

I personally remember them as kids, we called them the "Stabilities" . They had light blue Inyalas for patrols during and after the elections. I remember it (the Nyala) passing by street with both doors open and I thought what a cool vehicle, you could literally go through it. (of course it was my first time seeing one).

Rooikat's main mission is reconnaissance. The biggest reason for its mobility was to run away from tanks, not take them on directly. The suspension system and drivetrain were more important than the gun.
Make contact with the enemy to fix his position and then retreat and let the G-5's and Airforce do their job. Also for doing probing attacks for various reasons like gauging enemy strength to find weaknesses in their defensive lines. Same with the Eland it replaced.

Ratel 90 was the fire support vehicle for mechanised formations in the SADF. We did train with Rooikat in that role during manoeuvres though.
Ratel 90 and Eland 90 contacts with tanks in Angola was not how we were supposed to fight. It was done out of necessity. The terrain was also a bit of an equaliser. You never take on tanks with armoured cars if you can avoid it, no matter how big your gun is.

Crew training and experience also played a role. The FAPLA tank crews had no idea what they were doing and frankly, no business being in a tank.

In his book "The Cuban Intervention in Angola", Edward Georges mentions that FAPLA was so short on tank crews sometimes they received their first crash training only hours before being sent into battle.

As opposed to the Ratel 90 and Eland 90 crews who were held to much higher standards, had to complete thorough gunnery training, and had logged considerable time on their weapons.

Any piece of equipment is only as good as the men behind it.
