Thank God it's Roy Keane the focus is on and not any Nigerian player.

My reply is simply you making out Matthaus as a creative midfielder primarily. He was also def as a Dmf and CB. Finish.

I am shocked you saw this post on Redcafe and tried to play down the ability of Keano.

Completely agree. He and Robson simply couldn't have been our midfield generals for over a decade without being top class passers, that's how it's always been at this club. Keane was the one running our midfield from the moment Ince left to the moment he went to Celtic. I can understand things like "Vieira was the more gifted footballer" and "Keane's will to win stood above all else" being misinterpreted by the younger fans as him being a destroyer but I can't understand people watching him week in, week out and thinking that.

When he was named in the PL team of the year with Forest he was an attacking midfielder bursting on ahead of the forward time and again. In his first couple of seasons with us you'd see him running up the wing or getting into the box every bit as often as you'd see him in his own half. And to suggest he couldn't unlock opposition defences? Crazy. His passing unlocked plenty of defences and if that wasn't working he'd just go on a typical driving run like so:

The person you quoted wasn't even saying this in absolute. The truth is that you're trying to over empathise on his passing which wasn't too bad but not the core of his game.
Even Gattuso could pass a football.

Patson Daka in injury scare
October 2, 2017
2528 views

The Zambia bench is sweating on the fitness of striker Patson Daka who is coming to camp with a knock.

Daka reportedly sustained a minor injury while in action in the Austrian league on Sunday with RB Salzburg in their 2 -1 home win over AC Wolfsberger.

The Zambia striker came on as a 68th minute substitute with his side already well on their way to collecting the three points.

FAZ spokesperson Desmond Katongo said Daka will miss Zambia’s three-day training camp in Ghana as a result of that while he is receiving treatment in Austria.

“Daka will meet up with the team in Nigeria from his base in Austria,” Katongo said.

“The reason why he connecting later is that he picked up a minor injury and his clubs’ medical team wanted to do a thorough assessment of the injury.”

Zambia is already without their top scorer on 7 goals Brian Mwila of Platinum Stars in South Africa.

Mwila failed to recover from a knee injury he sustained on September 2 in Chipolopolo’s 3-1homewin over Algeria in a match he scored a brace at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

But Daka’s club mate and midfielder Enock Mwepu will join the team at its Accra camp on Tuesday together with Edward Chilufya of Swedish club Djurgardens.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper and Captain Kennedy Mweene, defender Stopilla Sunzu, striker Fashion Sakala and midfielder Chisamba Lungu were all expected to arrive in Accra on Monday.

Zambia leave Ghana for Nigeria on Wednesday ahead of their October 7 penultimate date away to Nigeria in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group B qualifiers.

Nigeria and Zambia have 10 and 7 points respectively heading into the crucial Group B clash.

Cameroon has 3 points and Algeria have one point with two rounds of matches left to play.

FLASHBACK:

Culled from sportsdayonline.

He said the Zambian team that lost at home against his squad is not the same side that beat Algeria 3-1 in Lusaka and 1-0 in Constantine.

Rohr further noted that six new players have been injected into the Zambian side, especially from the team that won the Africa U-20 Nations Cup earlier in the year.

Among the new inclusions, WHO Rohr noticed did not feature in the last October duel with Nigeria, are Patson Daka, Fashion Sakala, Chisamba Lungu, Augustine Mulenga, Brian Mwila and Ziyo Tembo.

Two of them got vital goals against Algeria that have put Zambia in contention for World Cup qualification, while Patson Daka scored the lone decider in the reverse fixture.

“There have been changes in the Zambian side that lost to us and the team that beat Algeria 3-1. I am aware they have new boys in the team, but I will watch the video of the double-header against Algeria over and over again and that will be a clue of what we should work on.

“We are not done yet. We need to put up a good fight against Zambia when they come to Uyo next month.

“Only fit players will play against Zambia. Nigeria should not be under pressure, we are going to take the match as if this is the first match of the World Cup qualifiers,” Rohr stressed.

Beautiful mentality... Wish I should show this to those boastful Zambians at their Fb pages.. I WI wait till 7pm on Saturday...

The truth is that you deliberately pulled a fast one to hide the reviews Keane got for his ability as a brilliant passer. I am just going through the first page of the forum and mostly positives.

I never worried about Keano misplacing a pass, that much I remember.

He was a fantastic passer. Not sure why anyone would think otherwise.

He was excellent, always played it into the path of the receiver.

People seem to think that because you don't associate Keane with his passing then it must mean it was a weakness. It wasn't, his passing was great. His game didn't revolve around it and he obviously wasn't at the level of Scholes but he was still great.

Rooney actually said that Roy Keane was the best passer he's played with.

His passes were quick, incisive and simple. Exactly what you'd want from an attack-minded box-to-box midfielder. Not the sort of player who'd rack up a load of assists (he wasn't Scholes), but he rarely lost the ball and kept the play ticking over. Other than his leadership qualities, his passing and goalscoring were the most important aspects of his game imo.

Keane was an excellent passer and IMO is significantly underrated in this respect. It was Keane that made United tick in his prime, the game flowed through him.

He mastered passes over 15-20 yards, always finding his man with crisp, accurate passes. It was Keane who would collect the ball from the centre backs and set the tempo of our attacks - he wouldn't sweep raking 40 yard cross field balls, but he would consistently and accurately make the simple passes which lead to the control of a game of football.

Keane also generally passed forwards, it wasn't as if he would knock it safe all the time.

Bingo. He was renowned for other traits but his passing was superb.

Granted he was a good footballer but not a genius. Someone in your posts even said his passing was not at the level of Scholes (and Scholes is not even a genius of football oo not to talk of Keane). My grouse is with the way you ascribe genius to Keane. That word is a sacred word, don't make it trite.

No. I asked you to define a genius, you said one of a kind. Keane was one of a kind and a master in his role. His role was not to make long range passes like Scholes. It did not mean he could not. Read this quote.

To be fair he could when they were called for, he was quite accurate with them too from what i remember.

It was not his role. Just as Mikel as Chelsea. He could hit most of the long balls but that is not what the coaches want. His job was to connect the back to the midfield. Keep it simple, tidy and accurate. Hiddink describes it as beautiful.

Keane was a genius and until today, irreplaceable.

Keane was quite like Carrick in that his decision making in the pass was absolutely top notch - he would always know where a pass should go and would generally play it perfectly. In fact, all over the pitch Keane's decision making and reading of the game was first class - 99% of the time Keane would do exactly the right thing, be it pass/tackle/position/foul (well apart from when he lost his head) etc.

This is a good explanation of Keane. It is the right decision making of where to pass the ball that made Ferguson crave for John Mikel Obi.
