October 11, 2017 ROHR: SUPER EAGLES DON’T HAVE WORLD CLASS GOALKEEPER, ENYEAMA MUST EARN RECALL By Richard Jideaka, Abuja: Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has admitted that his biggest problem during the chase for a World Cup ticket has been that of goalkeeping, Completesportsnigeria.com reports. The Super Eagles secured a Russia 2018 ticket on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Zambia in Uyo with Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal. “I don’t have a world class goalkeeper now but we’ll go with what we have,” Rohr told Completesportsnigeria.com in Abuja. However, Rohr also has nice words for FC IfeanyiUbah’s Ezenwa who stepped in during the home win over Cameroon and has conceded only one goal in three games. “Ezenwa is progressing so much that in the past few weeks he is becoming a very good goalkeeper and that is why he kept in the games against Cameroon and Zambia. He is a goalkeeper much stronger than before, we shall have to see what will happen in the next few months,” Rohr added in the interview with Complete Sports. “It is a very important position for any team. For the moment, we are very happy about the performance of Ezenwa. He has suddenly become an important member of the squad and we would keep working on him and see how how it goes.” Rohr commended the Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick who brought up the idea to get an additional goalkeeping coach to team up with Alloy Agu and work on the available goalkeepers. “One moment, (Vincent) Enyeama was out, Carl Ikeme was sick, (Daniel) Akpeyi was injured, so we had to play with our fourth goalkeeper. And what we decided was a brilliant idea from the President who told me since we don’t have another goalkeeper, let us hire another coach for goalkeepers even though the one we have is a very good one in Agu to complement each other,” Rohr revealed. Asked if Enyeama, who voluntarily retired from the national team, and Ikeme were still in his World Cup plans, Rohr said he is not sure of Carl Ikeme but said he is in good communication with Enyeama. He however pointed out that Enyeama, who has been released by Lille and recovering from a long-term injury, must first find another club, be fit and play regularly to get a recall to the Super Eagles. “We go to World Cup with the best players. Only players who are in good spirit, I mean the spirit of quality, hard work, respect, dedication and togetherness. Mujtahida: Two of the rudiments of coaching: 1. You don't change a winning formation 2. You don't change a winning team. These two principles work more often than not. Talking about starting Simon ahead of Iwobi against Zambia, the 2 principles above held sway, especially considering the fact that Simon put up two wonderful performances against Cameroon while Iwobi's last game (against SA) fell short of expectations. You are only as good as your last game (another principle). I remember when the topic was raised here about who to start between Simon and Iwobi, 90% ,of us said Simon cos that was a no brainer. Team building works on consistency. Rohr did the right thing. |

Goal.com nigeria's content has suddenly risen. latest suggestion to LB headache- A 3 Man defence that would see both Moses and Iwobi play the positions they play 4 club football. That makes Shehu our Bellerin!! would it work? |

soetanoreoluwa: A lot of talk but very little substance and comparing his statistics to Pogba’s adds no value. He is playing in low level league ranked below Turkey and he should be within the top 5 midfielders in that league to be considered real top quality. 1 Like |

Icon4s:There's so much dynamism with players required to be able to play at least two positions, attackers required to track back, goal keepers required to build up plays, shifting of emphasis from the traditional playmaker aka 10 etc. I read on goal.com that Holland is stuck in the past and has now paid dearly for it by not qualifying for the WC |

Mujtahida: All these things you mentioned are what teams(clubs and countries) typically do. Football has evolved, yes, and most coaches have evolved with it. Rohr inclusive. Sticking to same starting 11 does not necessarily mean being out of touch of modern football. |

AIG07: The operative word is Duo. Tega is what you get if you were to combine the attributes of KC and Ighalo into one player. Then you get the complete striker it is not a small feat for player to be leading the front line for a premiership team. In addition he Tega adds an attribute they both lack aerial dominance and heading ability. 1 Like |

kennysville: Maybe, our definition of Half-chances are different. To me none of the chances Ighalo missed were half. The goal Yaks missed at the 2010 WC - That's what I call a half - chance. His decision making can be better; he could have been faster granted. But I'd tell you, he had a fair game. It's not today we've seen world class strikers arriving late for a tap-in. Iwobi had no reason to trap that ball before shooting, those were two different scenarios, from a square play, no reasonable player or even a goal keeper would have any option than taking it one-time. Look at Ighalo's position again, I would have expected him to be on his heels in anticipation, from that position the only thing he could have done was bring the ball forward before shooting with his left. The defender would have still caught up with him. The point is He wasn't well balanced to take the shot with his weaker foot. If iheanacho was at the opposite side of the box, we all know he'd cut it back so he can take the shot with his left. Don't also forget, Samuel Adegbenro scored a goal from that position for his club - Rosenberg, he had to cut back and still had to get rid of another player before he could score, all of us here applauded him and some went as far as comparing the goal Okocha scored against Oliver Khan while he was at Frankfurt. Many are even putting up a case for his exclusion from the WC list, 1 goal and 1 assist in 3 games is suddenly not good enough. B4 the SA game I had called on Rorh to bench iheanacho for Ighalo, You need to see the way I was attacked, saying I was just being sentimental, we see what layer happened and how the game went and how everyone were singing his praises, now with the Zambian game, he's not good enough for us. I think Thegoodjoe and the supernerd were the ones who came for me then. |

Icon4s:Are you satisfied with Rohr's tactical prowess? Cos he emphasises so much on team spirit, cohesion, discipline and hardwork which are very good things but is such emphasis not a cover for inadequate tactical nous as some like Mickael2 (if I'm not mistaken) have alleged as in allege that he ain't all that strong tactically? |

junnyjake:Your definition of half chances is wide off the mark. Half chances are just that-half chances literally. What Yakubu missed in WC 2010 was not a half chance but a sitter. 1 Like |

Mujtahida: The situation of London clubs sees a dominance at youth level of African origin players. I have said this before many of these Nigerian origin players will dance Shoki more than many Nigerian. In addition some of them speak Nigerian languages. I remember taking a Nigerian origin player to Reading U18, getting to the dressing room I could hear this loud blaring thumping afro- beat music. And on seeing him the first question they asked him was, Bruv can you azonto, he replied in the affirmative and gave them a rendition and was accepted. Below is a the PSG team U19 celebrating in the dressing room, that gives you an idea of the cultural dynamics of clubs with African origin players dominating in European major cities, particularly more pronounced in London, England and Paris, France. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHDAGDINqyY All I can say is Enjoy, it does mirror the dressing room culture of many clubs particularly in the city Region of London. So the idea that they will not fit in is simply not a consideration, AT ALL |

Mujtahida:Thank God baba Rohr too knows this. Earlier today, I stated the obvious that our goalkeeping department still need a tested, trusted and reliable pair of hands. All this 'operation python jump'(in thegoodjoe's voice) Ezenwa is doing may cost us against top sides. One moment of lost of concentration may be catastrophic! |

do4luv14: Ighalo worked hard and did his best. I have my preference and I have made it clear here. I prefer offensive dynamic play and Ighalo's style does not suit what I want. My point is, if Iheanacho had that precise game, Many here would have come for his neck and wanted his head on a platter. |

Joebie: Disagree Aina doesn't have to prove anything he is already tried tested and proven. To be the best right back in the championship is not Moi-Moi. We actually do not know how good he is because he hasn't played right back for us yet. It's possible Shehu could be better but it's also possible that Aina is much better too. Until we try we do not know conclusively. |

jotey: Iwobi is a poor example of loyalty to Nigeria, firstly his Uncle is JJay. I'll ask this question, has a player who has never played first team football in his club ever been directly invited into the SE. Particularly when they didn't play at U17 or U20 for Nigeria. We are Nigerians we know what is happening here and it cannot be understated. His Uncle made way where there was no way and the rest is history. He played 3 U17 and just 1 U17 game for England, the reality was he was not rated highly at that time. His call up to Nigeria got him noticed a lot more. The issue of choice doesn't even arise there really was not one to make. 1 Like |
