lionel4power: OK. Yes, I only skimmed through but my last point still stands. Any layman would easily believe the Gripen is a better fighter than SU-30. |

nemesis4u:You're quite demanding, sheesh! How would one accommodate a miniaturised "designator"? Already the day helicopter has 3 cameras; one looking forward, one looking straight down, and one pointing downward at 45 degrees. The night helicopter has 2, one electro-optical sensor and the thermal sensor, both looking downward at 45 degrees. Me, I'd prefer they develop a version for use in GPS-denied environments, and maybe an extension to the current LOS range of 1.6km. 1 Like |

nemesis4u:YOU PROBABLY SKIMMED THROUGH THE ARTICLE TOO... the article features a scenerio.. and heres an excerpt from the article... . Furthermore, a flight of 12 SAAB Gripens would go westward to draw out the Angolan fighter jets stationed at the Mocamedes Airport. Alarmed by the massive probably hostile aerial formations heading towards its airspace, the Angolan Air Force sends its own fleet of 12 Su-30K to ward the Gripens off its territory. . i believe that answers all your questions. no 1) its the first aerial encounter no 2) only 12 SAAF Gripens were tasked while 12 Angolan flankers were scrambled no 3) yes Angola used CGI BECAUSE IT WAS DEFENDING ITS TERRITORY.. 1 Like |

lionel4power: Su-30k was a stop gap arrangement , while the Su-30mki was being developed , the stop gap arrangement was made so that the crews could operate it and provide their input to the Su-30mki development program. it was not a reject , it was the Su-30k which participated in the initial red flag exercises in US and they performed well only major difference is the canards and the avionics and the Angolan ones were surely upgraded with upto date avionics before delivery as per their requirements 3 Likes |

I know kikuyu1, mikeCZA, and 61mech have views on this: it is way past time to retire Grandad's WW2 Ma Deuce. Hell, even the little Hornet can carry the 20mm GA-1. Get rid of the Browning and mount the GA-1 on all our combat land vehicles - Geckos, Hornets, Mambas and Casspirs (I know the GA-1 is WW2 vintage also, but as patches689 says, it's all about the dakka) . I can't wait to see the Inkunzi Strike - at 13 kg and 85 cm, smaller and lighter than the Browning; automatic belt feed firing 350 round/minute of the innovative 20X42mm round in HEI, SAPHEI, etc - mounted on the Hornet. 3 Likes

GreenandGold: Only the SASFB gets to import military equipment (new and used) with a months-long delay on public declaration. Even then, my work means I soon get to know. Seriously though, once they filed their NCACC import forms I kept a look-out and since some of the principals are Reserve Force members, it's also on a closed military facebook page. 2 Likes

Speaking of medium-lift helicopters, in 2025 we'll have to replace our 39 Oryx. We missed a trick by closing the production line and selling the un-used Puma air frames which could've formed the base for Oryx2. As it is, our current Oryx is on par with the latest Airbus H225M. With budgets being as niggardly, we won't afford the H225M. 2 choices really: new Mil Mi-17s which we would have to modify for African conditions (as we did with the Puma); or used Black Hawks which we'd also need to similarly modify. Personally, I'd plumb for the slightly used carefully-chosen UH-60. 4 Likes

GreenandGold: Very much allowed. Till some idiot posts videos online of 16 Squadron practicing Rooivalk low passes . It's not for nothing our egg-beaters are the 1st choice of ALL the contingents comprising the UN MONUSCO in the DRC. Infuriates FIB Command when Saffers aren't available for CAS, trooping and Medevac because of MONUSCO taskings on convoy escort, VIP transport/escort esp. at night etc. We really should've done like the EU countries in the Mali UN mission: "our air assets serve the combat mission first, then the peace-keeping mission." But anyway, an Oryx pier-landing is small beer when that rubbish A109 is approved for mountain flying and rescue ops in Giant's Castle in the Drakensberg. .

This response leaves me cold. As I've always said, we post here as individuals. I was perplexed at the individual voters in Imo State who elected, and dare I say, continue to support a governor who pulls such stunts as honouring Jacob Zuma. I am encouraged by the many respondents here who've objected to iblawi's crude collectivist smear of individual Nigerians who happen to share some traits with the clown who currently governs Imo State. Hopefully, this enlightened posture will endure and be applied when the usual charlatans seek to deviously escape individual accountability by portraying particular contretemps as generalised nationalistic conflicts i.e. a random couple who happen to possess Nigerian passports disagreeing with me being portrayed as "Nigeria vs South Africa". What can I say, I'm just an naive Afro-optimist! P.S. iblawi, mate, that "apology" insults everyone here. 3 Likes
