Alarming statistics: how SA's economy suffers from inequality Some alarming statistics were presented at the recent Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA) Confronting Inequality conference. Millions of South Africans cannot afford to buy food or access healthcare, decent sanitation and other essentials of a dignified life. The National Income Dynamics Study shows that 29% of the population are trapped in severe poverty. Over the past few years, 3-million people have joined the ranks of the impoverished. Four-fifths of the rural population live below the poverty line — almost double the rate of poverty in the metros. |

South African CEOs earn on average 541 times the country’s per capita GDP. This is significantly higher than in the US (483:1) and the UK (229:1). The share of total income going to the top 10% income earners in SA is 60%—65%. In Europe it is 30%—35%, in the US 45%—50% and Brazil 50%—55%. According to Orthofer, 10% (whites) of the population own 90%—95% of all SA’s wealth. With a Gini coefficient of about 0.95 (compared to 0.7 for incomes, the highest in the world), "the South African wealth distribution is as unequal as that of the world as a whole", she finds. Wealth generates its own income — interest, dividends, rents and capital gains — and so further deepens long-term inequality. Read more: https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/op...om-inequality/

mtis: LMFAO, he is so frustrated soon he will be posting old pictures of apartheid . I hear zuma ha directed the Fulani Queen' s personal slave to erect another statue in Abuja . I'm telling you by the time zuma leaves office most streets in Naija will be named after him, he is truly a big inspiration in that nation. |

Had no idea the situation is this grim https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2016/feb/25/blackout-blues-the-lagos-nigeria-suburbs-that-have-been-in-darkness-for-five-years Entire neighborhoods of Lagos spending 5 YEARS without electricity. Thats a kid getting born and growing up not knowing what the term electricity refers to Guys iron their clothes at the office charge phones at the office ! I would fire someone trying to strip in my office for some ironing! You idiot better pay for Ironing Allowance ! Am paying for the generator You already came in looking unkempt and I saw your shabby looking clothes. In any case I'm also shabby, so we all shabby and its cool lets all agree that being shabby is the normal here! Some neighbourhoods have never even been on the grid – including parts of Ibeju Lekki, a suburb to the east of the posh island districts that is home to some 117,481 people, according to the 2006 census. It’s a working class commuter district, with some farming and fishing, and where the constant droning of generators is a familiar sound. And if the generator breaks, or you run out of money to power it? Olawale Adetula, a 30-year-old media strategist who lives in Yaba, once slept the whole night in his car with the air conditioning on. Hopefully he was a bachelor, otherwise his family was cooked inside the house! And this one The Beat FM joined telecommunications giant MTN in shutting down entirely for several hours during a fuel drought in May 2015. MTN, which boasts 62 million subscribers, spends a shocking 70% of its operating expenditure on diesel, more than 10m litres a month. Radio stations shutting down !!! Even MTN ! Where are the South African colonial masters to export some power to this colony and save their companies losses? Then of course there is this incredible feat of IRON(Y) Necessity breeds innovation. Boluwatife Soloye, a 22-year-old model, recalls one day in secondary school. “I always left things until the last minute, and so I assumed I’d be able to iron in the morning – but when I woke up, there was no electricity. I panicked and started brainstorming. Eventually, I took an old iron in the house, placed it on the gas cooker and used it to iron. I had to wipe, iron, replace on cooker, repeat.” The guy places the iron box on the GAS COOKER to heat it up ONLY IN NAIJA Just when you thought you had seen enough of Naija. Nigerians please, you will kill us ! 'But the 67 communities of Ibeju Lekki that have been in darkness for five years have yet to be connected to the national grid – though plans by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, to build a $9bn refinery nearby should encourage the effort.' Is this why you keep singing the new Dangote refinery song hoping it comes with some power? 4 Likes |

chrisooblog: Lol , we were drunk. To be honest though, not everything about Zuma's administration has been a disaster. If you follow SA politics, you would see that there is more behind the zuma must go noise. Look closely who's behind it and why. Zuma did bad things that have pissed me off, but I don't buy that he is responsible for the crap we are in , his lack of formal education has made him an easy target to ridicule as stupid and all sorts of words. Infact , In some of his decisions I support him more than Mandela and mbeki. The noise about zuma is to hide the weaknesses of these two men in my opinion. The 783 charges are a ridiculous stunt by the DA and their friends to destruct people from the real corruption that has gone on for centuries and zuma hit a nerve . The guy has made some questionable decisions, but the real reason he is ridiculed Is because he has signed policies that bothers Mandela and mbeki failed to. 3 Likes |

i won't be too hard on mandela. he was a pragmatist who knew change after so many years of apartheid wouldn't happen so dramatically like that overnight. mbeki i agree didn't connect enough with his political base but zuma? honestly i think for the good policies you said he initiated he's just using that as a form of populism to cover for his ineptitude Lionessza: |
