For crying out loud, after reading the letter, how can you still maintain such an idiotic stance.?

For starters, who asked ojukwu or even Banjo to liberate us from the northerners? So, ojukwu decided in his (ulterior) magnanimity to release banjo from prison (where his fellow ibo officers had placed him on a trumped-up charge) to go and liberate we yorubas from the northerners. Who asked ojukwu for liberation? When did we ask ojukwu for succor? I thought he was seceding with his ibo people from the union his same ibo people pulled us into against wise consul to the contrary? Ojukwu should have just concentrated his effort and meager resources on taking his people out of nigeria first instead of going about "liberating" others (and imposing his will on them) who at no time implicitly or explicitly asked for his help?

So, in essence, we yorubas will only be replacing nigerian army of northern extraction for biafran troops? And you call that liberation? what kind of liberation is that? So, Ojukwu will be the one to tell us when he thinks we are ready to protect ourselves from external threat? Geez! what a bloody insult. We yorubas that have already created a massive and enviable empire and civilisation when ojukwu's forefathers were still roaming around in the jungle in animal hides will now have to rely on him to inform us when HE believes we are able to maintain our sovereignty? What a bloody cheek!! But Ojukwu is not power hungry o!

And who the Bleep is ojukwu to tell us yorubas- a proud race who we can pally with or not? But Ojukwu in your assessment, is not power hungry o?

So, after reading the above condition, you still believe Ojukwu is not power hungry? So, even our obas cannot even fart in their palaces without first getting approval from Ojukwu? And You think yorubas - a proud race with rich culture and history will agree to such a stipulation from ojukwu? Some "liberation", it is!!!

And who is the flippin' govt of RoB? Ojukwu! But Ojukwu is not power hungry o! what a "liberation" (sic).

Let me just stop here as analysing Ojukwu's prerequisite for our unsolicited so-called "liberation" is making me feel sick- need to go and throw up.

Oh before i go and retch, what about the carnage that will have befall our region and the great loss of lives to our young generation? Am certain that Banjo knew (and definitely did not sign his agreement to such a dumb stipulation) that his people will never consent to Ojukwu's megalomania.

At any rate, what is the guarantee that once Ojukwu's objective have been realised, someone from the biafran side wouldn't put a bullet into Banjo? None. And you have the temerity to tell me, ojukwu is not power hungry. My mother didn't raise me a fool and we are definitely not that dumb in yorubaland.

And, don't call me "friend" as am no friend of yours or your type. That's not how i was raised in my neck of the wood to treat someone i consider, a friend.

It is beyond obvious that OJUKWU WAS NOT INTERESTED IN RULING THE WEST. HIS CONCERN WAS THE SUCCESS OF HIS OWN TENUOUS SECESSION. If u can't even see that then what's the point of further discussion

So why was Ojukwu telling Awo not to go?

Your friend is talking nonsense.
"Baba atilo" means "Atilo's father"
Just as they call Obasanjo "Baba Iyabo"
because his daughter's name is Iyabo.
Get it now?

Ok, so why was Ojukwu suddenly calling Awo Atilo's father?
You guys are not making any sense

Obasanjo was jailed by Abacha for coup.
As for Gowon, read this:

On July 29, 1975 while Gowon was in Uganda for an Organization of African Unity summit meeting, the army removed him from office.

Gowon was exiled to Great Britain. He was stripped of his rank for allegedly participating in the assassination of his successor, Murtala Mohammed, in 1976. He was pardoned by Shehu Shagari in 1981, and his rank was restored by Ibrahim Babangida in 1987. Having earned a Ph.D. at Warwick University in 1983, he became a professor of political science at the University of Jos in the mid-1980s and attained the status of an elder statesman of Nigerian politics.

But that Abacha coup accusation.of.Obasanjo dey as e be. E dey like say na frame up

Big lie. The Igbo were not allowed to secede and they were not forced out. Instead, there was a police action to keep them within Nigeria and a civil war to stop them from seceding. So why is Awolowo being blamed, when the Igbo were not allowed to secede?

Fine.but neither did Awo tell them he'd.be at the fore front of the fight against their secession

But the Mid-west neutrality as you tagged it, didn't stop ojukwu invading the region and imposing his own rule on the people.

The bottom-line was that Ojukwu intended bringing the whole of southern nigeria under his rule but Awo- a mere civilian showed him that brain power is mightier than sheer brawn and braggadio.

If in doubt, google " Ojukwu's letter to Banjo" and you will clearly discern ojukwu's intention- he was already salivating at the prospect of dominating yorubaland, something his father's friend tried but was unable to accomplish 16 years, earlier.

This is so funny, comparing a 32 year old boy with a grandfatherly figure he adored and called a hero. Unbelievable what a jaundiced eye can see.
We have now seen the letter u been touting. Proves the opposite of your claims

Here is what Americans wrote durring the war:

This is from "America's secret files on Ojukwu"
Note the bolded.

“AG (Action Group) activists and the man in the street are convinced Awolowo made the statement under duress… They say Awolowo’s true position was indicated in the Leaders of Thought resolution in May, which said if any region seceded or forced out, the West would automatically become independent. The activists feel that Awolowo missed the opportunity to bring the present conflict to close by coming to Ibadan and make a Western Declaration of Independence speech supported by Victor Banjo and his National Liberation Army.”
You keep repeating the same incoherent crap. Was any region forced out? Tell us, first.

Bottom line Awo, as a lawyer, put in the word "ALLOWED".

But the media, the public, man on the street, even foreign countries didn't see it. Instead what they heard is this:

If the Eastern Region is allowed by acts of omission or commission to ANNOUNCE secession or ANNOUNCE they are opting out of Nigeria, then Western Region and Lagos must also stay out of the Federation.

Your comments sound more and more moronic, by the hour. Were the Igbo allowed to secede? Or don't you know what the word 'allowed', means? Awo never used the word 'announced' in any of his comments, so stop lying.

Let's analyse.

Here is what Ojukwu said Awo told him:

"We talked and he was very vehement when he saw our complaints and he said that if the Igbos were forced out by Nigeria that he would take the Yorubas out also. I don’t know what anybody makes of that statement but it is simple. Whether he did or didn’t, it is too late. There is nothing you can do about it."
------------------

Here is what Sam Aluko, who was at the meeting, said about what Awo said:

"Awolowo said, if the East left the federation, the Yoruba would have to leave the federation."
------------------------

Here is what Awo said publicly (we will never know what he told Ojukwu in their private conversations):

2) The Eastern Region must be encouraged to remain part of the Federation

(3). If the Eastern Region is allowed by acts of omission or commission to secede from or opt out of Nigeria, then Western Region and Lagos must also stay out of the Federation.

Your analysis is flawed, inaccurate, and laced with deception. Everyone can see through your tricks and deceit. It has been repeated over and over on this thread: The East was not allowed to secede. When are you going to grasp this simple truth?!

I wholesomely concur with you if after reading the quote below:

(vii) During the period of Biafrans troops’ presence in your territory, all political measures, statements or decrees shall be subject to the approval, in writing by myself or on my authority

....it still remains "beyond obvious (to you and your ilk) that Ojukwu was not interested in ruling the west", then there's no point to this discourse. Let's at least, just agree to disagree.

behalf are concerned. We will forever be grateful to the sage for not turning our region into monuments simply because of a discord between

former bedmates (North and East).

I leave this asinine thread with a quote from the sage to Ojukwu (at their meeting in enugu)...........

You are remote from the West; you have advantages which we do not possess. We cannot rush without rushing to our death at the same time. We are not cowards in the West but we have to move cautiously, because if we do not do that you might not have us alive; you would only have monuments all over the place.

It's not me writing this is. It was written by Americans during the war. It was everybody's perception of what Awo said including the media, the man on the streets, AG activists, and even foreign governments. They all took it that Awo meant "If Biafra was forced to ANNOUNCE secession the West would automatically become independent". Everybody ignored the "allowed" they also ignored he said actual secession not just announcement of it.

Of course Ojukwu was no fool. He knew Banjo was nobody's yes man and would do what ever he wanted once he got to the West, so he knew all this was rhetorics and it turned out he was right - turned out Banjo was never for anybody's secession in the first place (as he actually tried to convince Ojukwu). He was always for one Nigeria and he was looking out for his own interests not Ojukwu's or anybody else's.

Yoruba and Banjo would have their own army so how can u occupy them. In short Ojukwu wanted the West secession to succeed so his own will also succeed

[b[color=#000000]]At any rate, what is the guarantee that once Ojukwu's objective have been realised, someone from the biafran side wouldn't put a bullet into Banjo? None. And you have the temerity to tell me, ojukwu is not power hungry. My mother didn't raise me a fool and we are definitely not that dumb in
yorubaland.[/b]

And, don't call me "friend" as am no friend of yours or your type. That's not how i was raised in my neck of the wood to treat someone i consider, a friend.

At the bolded. Anybody can put a bullet nto anybody's head at any time including Ojukwu. It would be harder for Ojukwu to put a bullet into Banjo's head in Lagos all the way from Enugu.

At the bolded. You are my brother and my friend and we are having s friendly discussion about historical events which will neither change what happened nor have much impact in the grand scheme of things. Except u r being too emotional and too tribalistic about the whole thing.

They are NOT controversies.
They are NATIONAL DECISIONS of a Patriotic Leader and they are all justifiable!!!

There are quarrels and disagreements over every single one of those points. isn't that the definition of controversy? Our discussion of them here will have little impact in the grand scheme of things and certainly will not change the fact that Awo was a great man.

Am sure you are conversant with what happened to Afonja who led foreign soldiers to ransack old oyo-ile. Banjo was leading Ojukwu's troops to ransack his homeland. Once bitten, twice shy. It will be sheer stupidity to make the same mistake again.

Not to mention, it was quite mischevious of ojukwu saying we 're friends. The r/ship between us at that moment in time was hardly what one can say is borne out of friendship rather that of rivals.

This coming on the heel of ibo mutineers in the army murdering our leaders both military and civilians whilst saving theirs a few years earlier and you honestly think we "ll trust their intentions.

Oh, so you have shifted the goal post to what Awo did NOT tell the Igbo. How pathetic. So you expected Awo to take permission from the Igbo before taking any action, right? You must be a joker.

You don't.have to take.permission.but at the same time don't.blame.them for feeling deceived that you did what you never said u would do.

You are not my brother or friend. I don't thrust you and your ilk. You did not see us as brothers when you and your leaders colluded with the northerners and relegate us to the background. As a consequence of you guys jumping into bed with the sardunna, you were able to forment trouble in our region, marginalise us in our region and take our jobs etc.

You malign our leaders and call us all sort of names just because we refused to roll over and let you ride rough-shod over our land- what you wouldn't dare with the north. That's why those guys have been killing you lot at the slightest opportunity evrn before we got independence.

It's truism that Akintola complained about ibo's domination of federal govt appointments in western region and the south in general and that was the main reason why he broke away from Awo's political path to align with the sardunna.

The moment Akintola aligned with the sardunna, the ibos lost most of their position and was the real reason why Akintola was marked for the coupist's bullets.
