I applied to western university for summer (may) intake. My application is a PhD program in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. I have B.Eng and M.Eng in Chemical Engineering with CGPA of 3.66 and 4.0 respectively. I have 2 international published research papers from my M.Eng thesis though it's not related in what I applied in western university but I believe it will serve as a research experience. I hold private tutorials in biochemical engineering for undergraduates of 2 universities. I have been trying to get supervisors but I've not gotten any reply from any of them. The program co-ordinator encouraged me to apply and then secure supervisor at any time during the application process. I have communicated effortlessly to these supervisors but I've not gotten any reply. Not even a single reply. I'm worried. Pls any advice? |

Good morning my Ogas, I'm so heartbroken right now, University of Concordia declined my application for the second time with the reason that the program applied to requires a CGPA of 4/5 but my own CGPA is 3.68. I'm currently running a masters in information technology in unilag which I intended to drop if the admission was successful. Please my bosses, which school will you recommend. I want to forget about concordia and apply to some other good schools. NB. I'm a graduate of computer science and engineering (CGPA 3.68). |

petitchouchou: It will be hard to get admission for public health with a 2.2. But nothing is impossible. This about the right time to get in the game because deadlines are opening and closing quickly now for admission and funding. I don't usually recommend a PGD because to VOs that is like a newsflash for doubting your purpose of visit, except you rise up above the tides. In your case I think you should look into Foundation Studies in different universities that you can take preparatory classes in your desired area of interest. Anything health related is in your background, you just need to articulate to the VO why you continue to be interested in it after such a long divorce. Foundation Studies is like PGD, only it's disguised in a different garb and shows intent to transfer to another area of serious study. You might stand a better fighting chance with it before a VO when it comes to visa issuance fighting time. |

MichaelsMadison:Cc:Mazi . I think you should check out more schools offering your intended program cos it's not advisable to put all your eggs in one basket. Your profile looks good to me and very soon you will hear from them. @Mazi should have more to say on this |

Kwamentim3: You have a point. You might want to explain to the VO better next time the correlation in your areas of interest. VOs are not Gods telepathically able to decipher everything. They are flesh and blood humans who make mistakes and sometimes don't know relations in courses of study. That said, purpose of visit I should mention is not always about correlation between your past area of studies or work and intended area of studies. It can also mean there is something in your background that the VO suspects you are using your studies as a way of effecting entry in Canada to be an immigrant and not solely for the purposes of studying. That is why it is important to dot your i's and cross all your t's to assemble a winning TRV portfolio. Best! Ps: get your GCMS notes to know for sure if what they are using against you is strictly financial or it combines with purpose of visit. I don't see the error annotation you talk about. If true there is an " entered in error" that was indicated, I tend to believe that VO may have ticked something wrong in your case and decided to enter that. You know a lot of these reasons of refusals are generic and when the VO denies an application, they just copy and paste which one relates to you. A better way of knowing what was in the offings, is to order GCMS. 1 Like |

MichaelsMadison: Don't bombard them with a barrage of esoteric research paper or thesis proposal. Send a friendly letter introducing yourself and your unique background as a student coming from Nigeria. Say why you are interested in working with them. Perhaps the work they did in some groundbreaking area. Don't pump them up and plead sir in every sentence like they do here in Nigeria. These people don't understand platitudes and you can come across as a sycophant or plainly annoying Don't use the letter to talk endlessly about your research. Talk at most in one paragraph or two, your area of research interest. Tell them you covet their response and will be happy to send them your full research proposal if they would be so kind to consider you for supervision. You are more likely to get positive response if you keep everything friendly and not too serious in your first communication. I would recommend if you don't receive a response, to resend the email once or twice at most, then choose a few professors you feel are the most perfect fit for you, call them on the phone and talk to them. Keep trying until you are able to establish contact and personally talk to the professor(s). Something should work. Best! 5 Likes 1 Share |

jnyuwa02: This is what I have exactly done. I've sent a couple of messages to some and just once to others. I don't know how getting them on phone will look like. But I will try to send messages again to professors that I have reached once. And maybe wait 2 to 3 days before reaching out to them on phone. Just like you said, something should work. I have my research interest which I indicated in my statement of interest but I have not really prepared any proposal on them. Thanks. |

MichaelsMadison: Getting professors on the phone is expected and schools recommend you do so if you have not heard from them. Professors are very busy you know. They can't avoid you by the time you establish personal contact. Make sure before establishing contact though, that you follow due process. |
Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 13 by MichaelsMadison: 12:48pm On Oct 29, 2017 |
jnyuwa02: The due process you mean was to send them messages couple of times. I have done such. Thanks. 1 Like |
Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 13 by jnyuwa02: 12:52pm On Oct 29, 2017 |
MichaelsMadison: Yes that is due process. After twice or thrice you have to change the strategy. For to keep doing the same thing all the time and expect a different result, is the definition of insanity. Best of luck! 2 Likes |

a bit of advise, don't be in a haste to send them a reminder in 2-3 days. This period (Fall) is grant application submission cycle so many professors are very busy. I would suggest perhaps give them a week before sending out reminders. I would avoid calling as much as possible but hey, I would do that if its my last resort. MichaelsMadison: 1 Like |

jnyuwa02: Thank you so, so much for your input! Don't think I've heard of that before. Typed "Foundation studies in Canada" into Google but the results were not that informative. Could you send me a link for such, or at least give me key words? Thanks once again. |
