Five Outstanding Nigerian Players over the Weekend

wetinhappen.com.ng

Oct 31, 2017 2:20 PM

With the Super Eagles list of players invited for the game against Algeria set to be released sometime this week, a number of players shone to put themselves in the reckoning for Rohr’s team.

While some are not in contention for a Super Eagles berth, their brilliance over the weekend caught the eye as they made our weekly list of outstanding Nigerian players.

Anthony Nwakaeme
There really isn’t a better time for Hapoel Be’er Sheva forward to get firing than this time. Nwakaeme who started off on the left of the Camel’s attack scored a beaut of a goal almost reminiscent of his goal, six days before, against Maccabi Tel Aviv. It wasn’t Tony working his way to the shot this time, it was more instinctive, seeing a loose ball from Maor Melikson’s heavy touch, the forward ran up five yards to hit a perfectly-placed, low, first time shot form the edge of the box in the 63rd minute to put his team ahead.

He put the icing on the cake six minutes to the end of regulation time when he and Melikson combined for an unorthodox one-two-three that had his teammate play a strong, low cross through a thicket of defenders. Tony took a touch with the cleat of his boot popping up the ball before he fired home.

The forward with three goals in his seven starts will hope to replicate such scoring form with the Super Eagles in a bid to join the squad to the World Cup in Russia.

Joel Obi
Injuries have not been fair to Joel Obi. The midfielder worked his way to full fitness after a lengthy layoff to begin the Serie A season with Torino. Two games into the season, Obi was with a goal and an assist but injury struck unfortunately after 10 minutes into his third game of the season. The former Inter Milan player had to sit out 49 days due to the muscle injury.

He returned to score the winner for his team against Cagliari over the weekend. Joel came on in the 56th minute replacing Afriye Acquah and he quickly got on in the action almost scoring few seconds after coming on. Obi looked lively all through his cameo, popping in the danger zone engaging in a number of goalmouth actions.

His most important action came ten minutes after he had come on. Cagliari’s goalkeeper Rafael stopped a shot at the near post with his foot but the ball rebounded off the inside of the crossbar to line up perfectly for the onrushing Obi to head in. The midfielder will hope to stay injury free as he builds his impressive substitute performance for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side.

Mikel Agu
Much-maligned Mikel Agu showed what made Gernot Rohr take a liking to him in Bursaspor’s 4-0 win over Antalyaspor . The midfielder was effervescent in the midfield and defensive third with a 90% pass completion rate from a team-high 72 passes while still posting three tackles and two interceptions. The former Porto player did score the game’s opener with his only touch in the box all game. Agu rose highest in the 37th minute to head home Pablo Batalla’s inswinging corner to set his team on the way to a rout of Samuel Eto’o’s team.

The midfielder has been a lynchpin in the Crocodiles’ midfield starting all of the team’s games snapping at heels and winning an impressive 3.6 tackles per game (Second in the League). Agu will, however, have to do more in the green of the Super Eagles to win over critics who continually question his inclusion in the National team.

Ogenyi Onazi
There were three red cards, eight yellow cards and 33 fouls in Trabzonspor’s game against Galatasaray but incredibly Ogenyi Onazi who played in the midfield that saw 42% of the match action was without a foul. What made it even less believable was the fact that Onazi led the game in tackles with his eight tackles alongside four interceptions.

The defensive midfielder was instrumental in his team’s first victory in their last six games as he delivered a solid performance, covering huge distances across the midfield for the 89 minutes he was on. Onazi hardly putting a foot wrong against the best midfielder in the Turkish SuperLig, Fernando. The Nigerian midfielder will hope he is rewarded with his third consecutive start against Kayserispor as he continues on the path of redemption at Trabzonspor.

Peter Olayinka
Olayinka got his goalscoring tally to five in a fortuitous manner. The 21-year old was on for the full duration of Zulte Waregem’s 2-1 win over KV Mechelen. Olayinka’s cross from the by-line on the left was intended for Sandy Walsh but it bounced off the turf into the net. The Nigerian who is on loan from Gent has proved a shrewd acquisition by Zulte Waregem with his contributions in goals and assists. The former 36 Lions player has seven assists this season from his 13 starts for Waregem.

how will you feel he should register an apology when you obviously share his views?

If they had taken one of those funny English 'talents' you constantly bring up here, you would have endorsed the list.

Your own view is moot as far as this topic is concerned. Stop trying to explain away what he meant by corruption, it is clear as day.

This useless thing you are bringing up about 'context' is expected, you can all say whatever, but 97% of posters here are very sentimental when they want to read posts and you are one of them

You are playing to the gallery of sentiment but without substance.

You did not define corruption and you did not ask Forgiveness what he means by corruption. For me a system becomes corrupt, when there is no clear unit of measurement for excellence, leaving the individual to make subjective judgement based on thier personal preference.

This mean that compliance to a set standard of principles cannot be measured and or enforced further entrenching the opportunity for abuse and therefore corrupt practices.

Question my rational even my objectivity with pertinent substantive questions even quantify my responses. But using emotional presumptuous rhetoric garnished with sentimentality will appeal to some but those with depth will see it for what it is.

Your prejudice is not even camouflaged. You use the term funny English talents

Again you use projected presumption to postulate what my responses will be. You are clearly misguided and unable to appreciate my position sadly.

It seems you are not comfortable with Nwakili invitation,I understand your position on his invitation.

I want you to know something about players invitations to Nigeria national team,i believe Icon4s, enomakos,goldfish80 w understand it better.

A lot of things comes in and we behind the scene w never understand than to keep on wondering on what criteria

My man did you know some invitations are not based on merits, these invitations normally come from agents who want to see their players in the national team to boost their market, some invitations come from NFF telling coach look you just have to invite this player, serious pressure, telling the coach the federal characters is their reason.

Did u know most of these foreign coaches have agents that brokered the deal for them to be appointed and these agents have players they are managing,it is a must for such coach to accept his agent players but there are unwritten rules if he make it in the camp fine, did you see Aaron Samuel getting invitation again coz he didn't meet up.

The home bred national team coaches w make recommendations of their choice players either good or bad,the foreign coach w accept coz he is new in the system.

I remember when my university coach was appointed as super eagles assistant and they requested for his inputs on players invitation,he made sure 5 of the university players got called up letter though they are playing in the local league, out of these five, two made it and one later established himself in the eagles to the extent of playing in EPL.

Remember after South Africa match that we lost two goals to nil, there are allegations that some players are getting invitation through agents which Rohr denied, this led to technical committee to mandate that they must see the list first before Rohr made it public.

On Nwakili i can tell anybody that he can get the invitation in many ways, one through agent,it's simple coach I have player who can do it better than Agu or Ogu,OK let me see him,his invitation can come through NFF technical committee and also through Rohr scouts, nobody can say but to based his invitation on merits is dicey.

I just see Nwakili in the mould of Shehu and Ekong, if you check these two players properly, national team shape up their careers coz on club level they don't deserve to be in the team but they are able to prove themselves and they are part of the team XI.

Let see what Nwakili has to offer before we judge him coz personally am not yet convince that he merits the invitation but such player always seize the opportunity and established himself to prove doubting minds wrong.

1 million like sir...

Do youread one of the post Joebie posted few pages back... ?

I think it's agent stuff not scout according to chidi agent

He said he had talk to Rohr about chidi but told him to chill that he's time will come... And now he was invited...

Many things happen about selection of players sentiment is always part of it that is the major reason you have integrity people working with you cos if you have people of less integrity you are gone... Records and everything will be spoil... Rohr just need to be careful that's all

Even some of players he even promised he hasn't invite them except Brian isokun which is on standby...

I could remember of the interview of former coach of under 17 late Yemi tella 2007... He said alot of agents will bring money for their players to be in the team... According to him if I could recall very well... He said all he need to do is to see them in training thats all..

You perform well you get the nod.. You don't perform well you get kicked out...

I can start seeing such with Rohr.. Example is Aaron Samuel case... And Nosa Igiobor case...
We should we wait.. Training and matches will judge everything

Manu Garba Magic – Uzoho, Nwakali Makes It Nine Players From 2013 U17 In Eagles

The all conquering Nigeria U17 team of 2013 is on the verge of becoming the most successful Nigerian youth team in history judging by the number of players who have progressed to the senior national team.

Four years from when they won the U17 World Youth Championship, nine of the players from the team have progressed to the senior national team of Nigeria, a number which could potentially swell in the coming future.

Lead by coach Manu Garba, the team won the U-17 World Youth Championship in the UAE, but FIFA has continually reminded nations that the essence of the tournament is primarily to develop players, and not about lifting the trophy.

So far the 2013 U17 team are fufilling the primary aim of the tournament, as the recent invitation of Deportivo La Coruna 18 year old goalkeeper Francis Odinaka Uzoho and on loan Manchester City midfielder Chidiebere Nwakali brings to nine, the number of players who have progressed to the Super Eagles.

Known for his hardwork, honesty and quiteness, Manu can also boast of more players from his 2013 team in the Super Eagles, with the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi on loan from Liverpool to Mouscron of Belgium, and Musa Yahaya at FC Porto knocking on the doors of the first team of their respective teams.

Full List of 2013 U17 Team Called Up To Super Eagles
1. Dele Alampasu
2. Francis Odinaka Uzoho
3. Ifeanyi Matthew
4. Wilfred Ndidi
5. Musa Muhammad
6. Kelechi Iheanacho
7.. Alhassan Ibrahim (Muazam)
8. Isacc Success
9. Chidiebere Nwakali

He was always on Tottenham bench played 30 games for Tottenham in two seasons and started as a 17 year old.

The other part of the story is who is ahead of him Lamela (Argentina), Winks, Dele Alli, Dier (England), Wanyama (Kenya), Dembele (Belguim), Sissoko (France), Eriksen (Denmark) all these players are proven tested international with a price range of £25 million and above apart from Winks.

How many 20 year old players in the world face that level of competition in the midfield. I would suggest None. How many Nigerian international current and past have ever faced that level of competition.

Finally do you know how many loan moves Harry Kane had before he became the deadliest striker in the premiership. Now Real Madrid are looking at him and every top club with big money.

So let's get things in perspective. Onomah is outstanding quality.

Onomah is unproven just like Nwakali at higher level.

Sorry, there re many 20 year olds at top clubs cutting it week-in week-out. He's just average.

what was the illogical comparison I brought up?

You are comparing Nwakali of 3 seasons ago, to Azeez of now.

That's what I mean by illogical comparison.

if you want to compare, compare Lugo Azeez to Sogndal Nwakali. That's logical.

You expect Rohr to look at the entire playing history of players, and make a comparison. That's what we do as fans.
As a coach, I think he looks at the recommendations based on the qualities he is looking for, then decides if the recommendation is good or not.
Different perspectives.

Joebie:
Sometimes I wonder how many championship players get called up by national team coaches. Your measurement of the quality of the English second tier is subjective. I said it before that I don't think Rohr has a high opinion of the championship. Of course we know very well that Aina was with Chelsea's main team when we started the push for him.

Anyway I could be wrong, but don't forget that most of these lads you are clamoring for need to make a switch first. Not like they can be called up right away. So why the noise?

The question remains are there other Defensive Midfield options out there? Azubuike Okechukwu, the younger Nwakali, and Ramon Azeez comes to mind. Of the these, none are clearly ahead of Chidiebere. It's not about who get's the chance first, it's about who grabs their chance with both hands. Hence, there is no cause for alarm.

The@bolded is the simple definition of illogical comparison.

Besides, These are not the only Defensive Midfielders available. Don't tell lies.

THANK YOU, you have touched on area we would rather avoid it's a very smelly can of rotten worms.

Whether Nwakali has a storming game or not is actually immaterial.

A good comparison is the pre- requisite qualifications to study at university. It's possible for someone with a two o/ levels to get in through the back door put his head down and make a first class. However, that's not the issue he circumvented the requirements by hook or crook that's unfair to the thousands who merited that university place before and more justifiably than that person. It's corruption.

If i talk about the bolded and what I know fight go break out. So I remain silent.

Onomah just anchored the midfield for England in the World cup winning U20 team. Is that average in your book.

He has been playing at Tottenham tell me one of the players that's playing in a top league and in a top team and his position, 32 games in that competitive midfield is very difficult.

He's classed as the best young attacking midfielder in the championship.

It took Aina a few weeks to be classed as the best RB in the championship. The same goes for Tega Abrahams a few weeks best striker in the Championship. So how long do you need to prove yourself.

Are you comparing a player who is playing in the backwaters of Europe in a league ranked at 30 and in a team that is third from the bottom facing relegation. On the same level as Onomah please that's bewildering to me from you.

Even when the final list is released, no matter how altruistic the process was, people will still raise questions about one or two players. That is life. We cannot all agree.

If there are several players that raise eyebrows, then corruption talk is understandable but talking about bribery over just one new player is careless talk. Especially when you can not offer much better replacements.

I have read the original report by TheTimes, I'm still yet to read a statement from Tammy.
Firstly it was rumored that Southgate went to watch him play against Arsenal -- granted. Next, it was said Southgate is considering naming Tammy for England's friendlies in November. No statement from Southgate as well.
I want to see an official quote.

Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham has reportedly decided to commit his international future to England rather than Nigeria.

The 20-year-old striker is currently on a season-long loan at Swansea City, where he has impressed with four goals and an assist in 10 Premier League appearances to date.

On an international level, Abraham has been playing with England's under-21s side for the last year and has already racked up 13 caps, but is also eligible to play for Nigeria through his father.

According to The Times, Nigeria have been courting Abraham in recent months and met with him in September in an attempt to persuade him to switch allegiance before he earns his first senior cap.

The newspaper claims that Abraham has decided to turn down their advances however, informing "senior FA officials" in recent weeks that he remains committed to the Three Lions.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in attendance at the Emirates last weekend for the Swans' 2-1 defeat to Arsenal and is believed to be considering giving Abraham a place in his squad for next year's World Cup in Russia.

Several players who won Nigeria 99 with Spain ended up with lower division clubs and disappeared. Youth football is different from senior level football.

Onomah is not even a sure regular with Aston Villa in the Championship. Has he declared allegiance to Nigeria?

Nwakali's Call-Up Well Deserved, Man City Have Plans For Him, Says Agent

Published: October 31, 2017

C. Nwakali's Call-Up Well Deserved, Man City Have Plans For Him, Says Agent
Allwell Nwakali, the elder brother and representative of Manchester City loanee Chidiebere Nwakali, has commented on the invitation of the central midfielder to the national team for the upcoming games against Algeria and Argentina.

''Chidiebere's invitation is well deserved because during his time with the U17s he was one of the best players. If you check after Isaac Success that got a club, he was next,'' Allwell Nwakali told allnigeriasoccer.com.

''Man City bought Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere the same time before Chidera Ezeh joined Porto.

''Apart from the work permit issue that made him not to play for Girona, he has been playing despite the fact Norwegian League is not as glamorous as other leagues like La Liga and the English Premier League.''

Manchester City, Chidiebere Nwakali's main employer, are happy with his progress in Scandinavia, and have him in their plans provided that he is issued a work permit by the English authorities.

''Everybody knows he has been playing well. If he has not been playing well City won't be happy with him.

''City are still happy with him and say they have plans for him despite we are facing a little problem with his work permit.

''With his inclusion in the Super Eagles team, it will be easier for him to get the work permit. As soon as he gets his work permit he'll go back to England and will do better in the Premier League.

''He is very young and full of energy. It is a well deserved one and I thank the coaching crew, the NFF and people that remember Chidiebere is still in existence.

'' They told me when his time come they will invite him and they fulfilled their promise. I hold them in high esteem,'' added Allwell Nwakali.

This season, Nwakali has played 26 games for Sogndal in all competitions, scoring four goals, and captained the team in the Norwegian Premier League match against Lillestrom on October 15.

Jack and Rashford play for Arsenal and United and are technically adapt players with Wilshere leaving Drink water to eat dust.

Drink water is a water carrier for me great endeavour no frills 109% commitment but lacks the subtle touch and vision for the international game. But that's my own personal opinion.

Nonetheless, the less Drinkwater had just won the league with Leicester City and EPL club. He didn't just spring up from the Conference North non league. What you have is preference not whole scale deviation from accepted standards.

Abraham has impressed for Swansea

Tammy Abraham has provided Gareth Southgate with a boost as he continues his preparations for next summer’s World Cup finals by declaring that he wants to play his senior international football for England.

The Chelsea striker, who is enjoying a successful season on loan at Swansea City, is being courted by Nigeria, whom he is eligible to represent through his father, who was born in Warri, and is a childhood friend of the Nigerian Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick.

Abraham held talks with Pinnick about a potential change of allegiance in September, but is understood to have told senior FA officials in the past few weeks that he remains committed to England.

The 20-year-old has won 13 caps for England Under-21 and is targeting a step up to the senior side rather than pursuing a switch to Nigeria, for whom he will be eligible until he wins a senior England cap.

Southgate watched Abraham play for Swansea last Saturday away to Arsenal, where he created the visitors’ opening goal for Sam Clucas and had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside, and the manager is considering naming him in his squad to play Germany and Brazil next month.

Since joining Swansea in the summer he has scored four Premier League goals in nine starts, a figure all the more impressive given his loan club have scored only seven goals in total.

Southgate considers Abraham to be a potential World Cup bolter even if he does not make his next squad, which will be announced on Thursday. While Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford are certainties to travel to Russia and Jamie Vardy is likely to make it, one or two striking slots are up for grabs. Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck’s repeated injury problems may count against them, as may Jermain Defoe’s age as he approaches his 36th birthday.

Abraham’s commitment is also a relief for the FA, which, despite the success of the age-group teams, has seen Nigeria pick off former England youth internationals such as Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Sone Aluko, Shola Ameobi and Ola Aina in recent years.

@bolded is another fat lie from hell.

Nwakali's Call-Up Well Deserved, Man City Have Plans For Him, Says Agent

This season, Nwakali has played 26 games for Sogndal in all competitions, scoring four goals, and captained the team in the Norwegian Premier League match against Lillestrom on October 15.

my friend with all due respect I have been clamoring for us to make moves for Abroad-bred players.
And you know very well that Pinnick and Rohr have been working on this more than any NFF administration and coach we've ever had in this country.
You know how long it took with Aina. You have read reports of NFF making approach, and also planning on making approach on these lads.
The context remains invitation for Algeria and Argentina. For you to cry foul just because the whole allegiance talk and switch thing don't happen overnight is bewildering. I don't get your point at all. Are you claiming they are not aggressive enough?
hmmm

komekn:
I

There is a lot of political maneuvering going on behind the scenes. I am sure you must realise that Rohr will still be influenced by the NFF for good or for bad he is not a one man band.

We continue inviting players through the pages of newspapers and the media. It's not about what Rohr regards as a quality league. But what actually is Quality it's not as subjective as some may think these assessments are there for all to see.

It's self evident. How can you be calling someone playing in Norway ranked near 30 in Europe in a team third from bottom who is even being benched as quality.

But back to the Championship you watched how the teenager Tega Abrahams tore up the championship and now the best young striker in the Premiership. That tells you something.

The best young left back in England plays in the championship bids of £30 million by a series of EPL clubs were rejected by Fulham.

Aluko was playing in the premiership but was not invited to the SE.

One of things you find with European national team selection is that the measurements of quality are there for all to see. The Co- relationship between top club performance and national selection is has little or no divergence.

The Spanish team dominated by Real and Barca players same goes for Germany. And across Europe you will find players from the top leagues and top clubs. If you look at Brazil, Argentina and even Chile thier players will come from the top clubs and leagues.

Something is clearly not right.

Believe you me do not be deceived the switch can be made a lot quicker if things are done professionally. So don't always believe all this nonsensical posturing by NFF that they have been trying.

The pertinent question is getting the best players into the SE without prejudice.

How many Nigerian origin players are doing what you just said name just three in the midfield And I go quite. In a top three league in the World.

He won u-20 World Cup against Venezuela. The same Venezuela whom their 95% of players are in black water league.

U-20 is youth football and according to you, it shouldn't be taken serious.

From the Times you just posted it said he has declared and it's a huge relief for them, what other quote are you waiting for Mr Joebie obviously he gave the interview.

Hahahaha hahahaha @the bolded. Free this thing. Let me ask you this question: What do you stand to lose upon C. Nwakali's invitation? If he comes and performs, won't you be happy? If he does not, then he's out. Either way you win. The only thing is if he doesn't perform and he's kept on in the team.

I don't even see him playing. Remember that it's the absence of Vicmo and Echiejile that has made this possible.

We must voice out against injustice and illegality else this country becomes a banana Island.

Why invite him if you don't want him to play?
