Obasanjo created the opportunity for our parents or grandparents to become shareholders, through the indegenisation policy he introduced in the 70s . This policy mandated all foreign owned companies to sell 60% of the shares in those companies to Nigerians. The government even gave loans to Nigeria workers to buy shares in some blue chip companies. Unfortunately when Obasanjo came back in 1990, he changed and even allowed 100% ownership of businesses by Nigerians. 1 Like |

While we are busy making small money through short term trading JIJO, the foreign are strategically increasing their holdings. Just going to Lafarge WAPCO annual report, the French own 73% of the company. Going through Nigeria Brewery annual return the Dutch now own almost 66% of the company. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Why am I saying this, Nigerians should take their rights or sell their rights to fellow Nigerians. The French guys promise Lafarge WAPCO shareholders that they would take their rights and even buy more from Nigerians who are not ready to take their rights. |

Coca-Cola is making billions from the Nigerian market, but when the foreigners became the majority shareholder they decided to delist the company and personalize the profits. MTN became the market leader in Africa because of the Nigerian market. They will rather give you 100k free credit or 1 million on who wants to be a millionaire rather than giving loyal customers 50k worth of MTN shares. 1 Like |

tritritri: Learn from what happened with Guinness Nigeria, once those foreign guys are taking their rights please try and take yours or if you don't have money sell your rights at a premium to a fellow Nigerian. Guinness Majority shareholder took all their rights, asked for more and were also buying more on floor of the exchange. |

Thats criminal. There is a code of ethics on insiders dealing. Connected persons especially those on the board of quoted coys must always inform the exchange whenever they are increasing their stakes. emmanuelewumi: |

The foreigners increased their holdings by raising foreign currency denominated convertibles corporate bonds between 2000 and 2005. Most retail investors didn't participate in such, because of the difficulties in getting foreign currencies. The majority shareholder also gave loans to the companies which were converted to shares. They also raised funds through right issues. They also bribed some of the leaders of the shareholders associations. Stock market wealth was really transferred during the meltdown. |
